Abstract

Oryza sativa L. is a rice-producing food commodity plant that has high economic value, because of its function as staple food, source of income and source of nutrition for most of Indonesia's population. The availability of rice must always be guaranteed, but often encounters obstacles, one of which is the presence of pests. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity and dominant pests species on rice plants in 3 villages, i.e Sukarejo, Alue Pineung and Cinta Raja Village, East Langsa District, Aceh. The method used in this research is descriptive explorative field observation using hand collecting sampling. Data analysis was carried out by describing pests, symptoms of attack and continued by calculating the value of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. Based on the observations, the result showed 6 species of pests were found on rice which consist of 5 orders and 6 families, they are Leptocorisa acuta, Nezara viridula, Oxya serville, Lonchura leucogastroides and Pomacea caniculata. The diversity index values in 3 villages were 1.41-1.72 with highest diversity index value from Alue Pineung Village. Of the 6 types of species, the dominant pest causing the most damage was Leptocorisa acuta (Walang sangit). This research is expected to be a reference in preventing pest attacks in the Langsa. Keywords: Diversity of pests, dominant pests, rice

Abstract

Studies on butterflies have been done in Aceh region, like Aceh Besar, Aceh Selatan, Aceh Tengah, and Langsa. But there is no research about butterfly from Aceh Tamiang, especially in Kaloy. There are many habitat types in Kaloy, one of them is Kaloy Limestone Hills (KLH) with many vegetation in there that support butterfly diversity. This research aims to analyze butterfly diversity from KLH. Field observations were conducted from December 2022 – January 2023 (in the end of rainy season) using the standard walk method with six observation sessions. The result showed there were 32 species belonging to four families, with Nymphalidae as the most families found and Junonia hedonia as the most species found. The ecological assessment of butterfly populations at the time of the research were butterfly diversity indexes (H’) were between 2.24-2.46 and the dominance indexes (D) were between 0.11-0.13. Butterfly diversity from KLH is additional information to butterfly database in Indonesia, especially Aceh Province. Also, this information can be a future reference for conservation management in Kaloy.

Abstract

Odonata is important as environmental bioindicator as well as pest control. Langsa Urban Forest (LUF) is a 10-ha green open space in Langsa City, Aceh Province which serves the purpose of tourism and support biodiversity conservation, in which Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) is included. Thereis a lack of Odonata research in Langsa, especially at the LUF area, therefore this study offers a baseline information for wildlife management. Field observations had been conducted between February to March 2022 using line-transect method. As a result, this study recorded 19 Odonata species from four families, of which Orthetrum sabina (Libellulidae) became the most prominent species observed. Odonata diversity in LUF was medium (H’ = 1.863-2.252) with population of each species presumed to be nearly even (J = 0.71-0.79). Odonata diversity in LUF serves as additional information on Odonata species found in Indonesia, especially Aceh Province. Also, the medium category of Odonata diversity index in LUF can be used as a reference for LUF management to support more ecosystems as Odonata habitat.

Abstract

Butterflies are important for the ecosystem and human life. The presence of butterflies has also become an attraction for nature-based tourism. Langsa Urban Forest (LUF) is an ecotourism site in Langsa City with various biodiversity, including butterflies. For now, data on butterfly diversity in LUF is limited to the active collection using insect nets. This research aimed to complete the database of butterflies in LUF by passive collection to support conservation in LUF. Data was collected for 3 months in the early rainy season (from late August to October 2023), with 8 repetitions using the bait trap method. Results showed 13 species from 3 families with 37 individuals. There were 7 species newly recorded, making a total of 43 species in LUF. From 2 different traps used, 9 species preferred banana bait, 6 species preferred shrimp paste bait, and 2 species trapped in both baits. From 13 species collected by bait trap, 11 species are categorized as Not Evaluated and 2 species are Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Abstract

Potential for the development of the mangrove crab business in the coastal area of the city of Langsa, which has a fairly large mangrove forest area and produces abundant mangrove crab resources. However, some of the results of the study stated that the exploitation and the absence of restrictions on the size of the capture of mangrove crabs resulted in a decrease in the number of catchments by fishermen because the condition of crab stock in nature has decreased. The purpose of dedication is to provide education and training to fishermen about selling mangrove crabs, which is more prioritized than fattening results from direct catches from nature, and to increase the production of mud crabs by utilizing local materials. The next goal is the management of crab capture. Implementation of dedication is carried out through socialization and training for coastal communities and fishermen in Sungai Pauh Tanjung Village, Langsa City. The results of the implementation of community service activities contribute to increasing skills and added value, as well as increasing the production of mangrove crabs through the use of Samudra being cages and the use of local materials as potential feed for fattening mangrove crabs before being sold at the market.
