Abstract

Primary school teachers have a crucial role to support CLIL and web-oriented media implementation in class. CLIL approach pedagogically offers double advantages; English competence and content development. This pedagogical approach leads to sufficient English input at the early stage of learning which makes primary learners able to shift the paradigm that English is a challenging language to learn. More importantly, primary school learners can take the advantages of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) part of their daily use for the sake of CLIL, so learning can be fun and enjoyable. Nevertheless, much of the previous research in Indonesian context gives limited attention to how primary school teachers perceived CLIL interwoven into ICT based media.) that situation led into this research. Also, this research is expected to encourage the CLIL application in formal education, particularly in primary levels due to time efficacy and effectiveness. The involved participants were 12 primary school teachers in a primary school in Malang. A 14-item Likert-Scale questionnaire and FGD were applied to collect the data. It was found that the teachers perceive the CLIL and web-based media positively, but they would reconsider to implement it in their class due to English competency reasons and material design issue, facilities, and school support. Therefore, hybrid CLIL implementation and teachers’ collaboration are suggested.

Abstract

In an international communication context, English becomes an International language , commonly known as English as an International Language (EIL). EIL sees various English accents equally because intelligibility, being able to deliver message clearly to listeners, is the main goal in a communication. Therefore, Indonesian EFL (English as a foreign language) students need to focus their English mastery on intelligibility over native-likeness accent when learning English. However, whether or not the students concentrate their English learning more on intelligibility is still unknown yet. To identify which aspects EFL students focus on, the research examined Indonesian EFL students’ attitudes toward their L1-accented English. The main aim is to enhance their awareness that intelligibility is the key component in an English communication. Also, English teachers hopefully discuss the intelligibility in their teaching. Thus, the targeted learning results, particularly related to speaking skills development, are more reachable so the students are more encouraged to develop their English. The study involved 46 students (14 males and 32 females) from University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), East Java. The implemented instrument as a data collection is a questionnaire. The collected data were organized and then analyzed to find out EFL students’ attitudes perceiving their Indonesian-accented English. The researcher figured out that EFL students had less positive attitude towards their own English accent. That perception might be caused by their low linguistic awareness, excessive exposure to the Internet (YouTube, International news) made by native speakers of English. The result of data analysis will be elaborated to interweave the investigation outcomes with classroom context so the outcomes could be implemented in classroom instruction. Keywords: Accent, Intelligibility, EIL and attitude.

This situation is called a silence phenomenon. Due to this was a new type of issue in EFL teaching and less investigated research, the researchers conducted the study to investigate the factors and solutions of the silencing phenomenon faced by EFL students during an online class. Abstract The tenet of being able to speak English in public sphere as a global life skill has now been a driving force for many Indonesians to learn English since early age. Not only in educational sector, public speaking skill is also in high demand for nowadays’ context—industrial marketplace era. Yet, in many situations, teachers fail to support students with the necessary skills to perform public speaking. As English is still a foreign language in Indonesia, assigning students to perform public speaking without proper training leads into fear or anxiety. However, a practical training into what the best practices of public speaking should be undertaken by educators. Moreover, Indonesia as the biggest Muslim country has many Islamic schools around. For Islamic high school students, Islamic-based material is the content that likely becomes the discourse of the school curriculum. To preach Islam in a global level, English can open up ways to this. Thus, the notion of infusing Islamic-based content in public speaking classroom is necessary. Implementing this, a training on Public Speaking with Islamic-based materials were conducted in Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyah 1 Malang Indonesia. The study results in highlighting several practical steps for Public Speaking with Islamic Civilization content. Procedures will highlight on experienced-based learning and some techniques to support a local-based atmosphere. In so doing, this present study suggests that Islamic Civilization content can be used as a supporting material for students learning in Islamic school context. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers in Islamic school can design the curriculum that underlies Islamic elements.

Abstract

English skills will automatically leave English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students (mechanical enginering, accounting, animal husbandry etc.) more opportunities to access international journals and textbooks related to their study. Therefore this research was conducted in order to analyze (1) learners/ target needs (necessities, lacks and wants) in ESP learning process in class. The learning outcomes were then used to determine ESP learning emphasized learners needs. So, the learning activities will be more fun and engaging. The instrument to collect the data was questionnaire (likert scale) distributed to the 64 mechanical engineering students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) as the subject. The data was analyzed using a simple statistical measurement for interpretation purposes. The research finding was divided into three. Firstly, the students necessities for ESP learning were to get connected globally through English and to prepare them for higher education. Secondly, their lacks of English competence are that they have less sufficient perfomance to complete the exercises in class. Lastly, regarding their wants, they expected that English would pave a road to gain a decent job in an international company. Therefore, ESP development has to focus on the students’ preferences above as the priority. It means that ESP English teaching and textbooks ones are suggested to pay attention to those findings.

Abstract

Game-based English learning was considered as one of the effective techniques to develop student learning motivation and engagement. It is popular due to today's more advanced gadget technology and the COVID-19 pandemic requiring students to study from home. Much research on the gamification of English learning in various countries involving different age levels was conducted. However, very few research focused on Quizziz-online gamification for English learning purposes in the context of junior high students. This research investigated the level of students' engagement and learning outcomes of Quizziz-online gamification on English learning development in junior high school. This case study involved a secondary school English teacher and 62 students in the 9th grade at a private junior high school in Batu City, East Java Province, Indonesia. The data collection methods were observation, interview, and students' test results. Based on the descriptive and thematic analysis, it was found that gamification affected students' engagement, better active participation, and discipline. However, their English learning outcomes were dynamic. Thus, integrating an internet-based game, Quizziz, in English instruction with more cognitively driven approaches is worth implementing for better English outcomes.

Abstract

English teaching at primary school in Indonesia has experienced some changes in its curriculum, the K13 curriculum is the one that is implemented currently. However, there are some challenges that occur such as the time allocated for the English teaching until its textbook design. Henceforth, English teaching at primary school needs a new move. Another significant issue is related to the design of the curriculum that needs to be adjusted to each school context. In Islamic schools, English teaching finds its own issue, mainly on the cultural aspect—Western culture and ideology. Thus, this present research aims at developing an English workbook that is Muslim-friendly for their students. The method implemented in this study was Research & Development (R&D) with ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. This research has resulted that there were 5 major topics related to Islamic content developed, such as believing in Allah and Rasulullah, salah, al-Qur’an, noble characters, and the Prophets. Further, this research has resulted from a concept of workbook design, comprising brainstorming, short text, and activities that divided into three categories: cognitive activities (matching and listing), kinesthetic activities (drawing, coloring, and tracing), and the last one is vocabulary-based activity (word search and puzzle). All chapters were designed by considering the implemented curriculum at school partners. The finding of this research has shed light that integrating English and Islamic content can be a way for Islamic schools in Indonesia to build Islamic value to their students as well as to find the school's own character.
