Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that several cases have been found where veiled women experience marginalization both in society due to their style of veiling (niqab) and in the workplace. This is certainly contrary to the intent of the Qur'anic verse prescribing veiling, which is meant to protect women. Therefore, this study aims to re-examine the Qur'anic verses that discuss jilbāb by considering the inclusive space for women in the public sphere. This research uses a phenomenological approach, intertextual method, and Margot Badran's Islamic feminism theory. This study finds that the interpretation of the jilbāb verse shows a trend that the essence of the jilbāb is to protect the dignity and honor of women, with various interpretations of its form. Some interpret jilbāb as a cloth covering the head of a woman, while others see it as modest clothing. Initially, the protection prescribed by the jilbāb was understood internally as a command to cover the 'awrah. However, as cases of marginalization against veiled women have emerged, the jilbāb can now be understood not only as protection through covering the 'awrah but also as protection of women's rights legally and socially. Therefore, this study does not justify the marginalization of veiled women for any reason.

Abstract

Reconstructing the Meaning of Polygamy in the Context of Gender Relations Study of Surah an-Nisā’ [4]: 3 Using the  Ma‘nā-Cum-Maghzā Approach. This article aims to reconstruct the meaning of polygamy in Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3 within the context of gender relations. To achieve this goal, this research employs a deconstructive paradigm using a hermeneutical approach, ma‘na-cum-maghzā method by Sahiron Syamsuddin, and feminist theory as analytical tools. The study yields two main findings: (1.) Universally, the primary message (maghzā) contained in Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3 emphasizes the importance of gender justice for women. Thus, in a broader context, the maghzā of this verse rejects any actions that subordinate and negate women’s rights, Thus, from here, this research aligns with the opinion of Muhammad Irsad.; (2.) When the universal moral value of Surah an-Nisā’ verse 3, stating the importance of gender justice, is recontextualized into the specific context of polygamy, this research aligns with the view that the primary directive in this verse is monogamy accompanied by efforts to build a harmonious and quality Islamic family. Polygamy, on the other hand, can only be practiced under highly specific and urgent conditions. Additionally, this study rejects actions that use this verse as a legitimization for patriarchal views that tend to relegate women to a secondary class in society.

Abstract

This article examines one of the Javanese-Pegon Quranic exegeses emerging from the background of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The subject of this study is the Tafsir al-Mahalli li Ma‘rifati Ayati al-Qur’an wa Nuzuliha by Ahmad Mudjab Mahalli. Through the Gadamerian hermeneutic approach, this study demonstrates that the emergence of Tafsir al-Mahalli is a response to the local communities’ demand to study and understand the Quran without language difficulties. This tafsir also reflects Mudjab Mahalli’s academic concern in responding to previous exegeses that he deemed insufficient in contextualizing the Quran among the local community. In terms of appearance, the tafsir was written in Javanese language and pegon script, indicating the author’s close connection with pesantren culture. Furthermore, from the communicational aspect, Mudjab Mahalli preferred to use polite Javanese language (Jawa krama) in his delivery, making the conveyed message more accessible to the local community. Regarding his interpretation, Mudjab Mahalli appeared accommodating towards Javanese cultural forms of address, such as using honorifics like Paduka and Pangeran. Moreover, the hierarchy of the Javanese language employed in his tafsir indicates the Mufassir’s careful consideration of linguistic etiquette. These local elements were shaped by Mudjab Mahalli’s interaction with religious values present in the pesantren environment.

Abstract

This article is a study of the ta’wîl pattern in the book of Al-Tafsîr Al-Marâghî. Tafsîr Al-Marâghî is a book that appeared in the modern period and became the magnum opus Ahmad Musthâfâ Al-Marâghî. Using descriptive-analytical method, there are two main studies: 1.) The sources and methodes of interpretation of Ahmad Musthafâ Al-Marâghî; 2.) The pattern of ta’wîl in Al-Tasfîr Al-Marâghî and its relevance to the development of modern interpretation. This research resulted in Al-Tafsîr Al-Marâghî being a book whose interpretation comes from the Qur’ân, hadith, qaul shahabi, language, ulama, ijtihad, and 30 reference of previous books. Using two methods of interpretation at once, ijmâly and tahlîliy, this book is patterned by al-adab al-ijtim‘î, and has characteristics with using naql and ‘aql when interpreting of the Qur’an. Ta’wîl in Al-Tafsîr Al-Marâghî had two patterns, firstly in focusing on linguistic indicators, and the secondly focusing on ratios and is critical. The application of these two ta’wîl patterns can represent a modern period interpretation model that was born in a pragmatic and logical society.

Abstract

Biophilic design principles emphasize the relation between human, nature, and building to improve the quality of built environment. Nowadays, the availability of communal space as workplace in co-living building has become a common need. In Surabaya, Andy Rahman is one of the architect who expresses his concern about this phenomenon by designing co-living building with workplace, while prioritize local design and natural system. The objects of this study are three co-living building that are designed by Andy Rahman, located in Keputih, Surabaya. This study aims to describe how users experience and perceive the elements of biophilic design within the objects of study case. This research implements qualitative strategy to examine user’s perception of biophilic design principles in the design of each co-living building. Qualitative methods purports to describe the real life conditions of research subject. The data are collected by observation and interviews. The participants consist of university students that each have lived in the study case building for at least a year. The analysis is carried using the theory of biphilic design patterns and interior elements of biophilic design. The results show that there is an incremental changes among the object of the study regarding the quantity of perceived aspect. However, the results show that all three building designs are dominated by the sampe aspects. Moreover, the results indicates that the participants have different abilities in associating each design parameter
