Abstract

Relief is a sculpture on a building or stone that describes a message or event that occurred at that time. In addition to reliefs, depictions of human life during the Hindhu-Buddhist period are found in inscriptions and also records of foreigners visiting the archipelago. One side of life depicted in these three sources is the hunting of animals. Then how are the three historical sources in this classical period able to provide a visualization of life so that they can be translated as historical sources. These three sources complement each other about the visualization of hunting, scratches on the reliefs of Borobudur Temple provide a visual picture, and the inscriptions will explain the meaning and terms of hunting, and finally the more foreign news about the types of animals being traded. These historical sources are examined using the Archaeological approach to be a historiography.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Dutch propaganda film Peoples of the Indies. The Dutch East Indies experienced a difficult period during the 1930s. The economic turbulence had an impact on political movements in the Dutch East Indies. Japanese propaganda was getting more and more alluring at that time. The Dutch saw Japan as a threat in the late 1930s. Therefore, the Dutch needed to ask the United States for public support to protect the Dutch East Indies. A propaganda film entitled Peoples of the Indies was made. This research will examine (1) the reasons why the Peoples of the Indies film needs to be made; (2) the multimodality of the Peoples of the Indies film; (3) the influence of the Peoples of the Indies film in the Dutch East Indies. This study uses the historical method with a multimodality approach. The results showed that the propaganda film, Peoples of the Indies, needed to counter Japanese propaganda. In multimodality, this film built on the discourse of democracy and multiculturalism in their colonies. The influence of the film on the colony was completely absent. The film's failure was because the Dutch ignored the importance of Indonesian public support to only target the United States and its allies. Meanwhile, the Indonesian public was already influenced by Japanese propaganda, even before the country succeeded in defeating ABDACOM and the Dutch East Indies Government. The Javanese also welcomed the arrival of Japan openly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the thoughts of Javanese Muslims on cockfighting in the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. It has been a custom and culture since humans domesticated chickens. At first, it had a sacred connotation. It eventually devolved into a profane gamble. Although Islam banned animals fighting and gambling, the tradition continued during the Islamic era. This study examines (1) the reasons why Javanese Muslim culture enjoys cockfighting, (2) the forms of Javanese Muslim thought about cockfighting in Javanese manuscripts from the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, (3) its influence on colonial and royal rule in Java. Research showed that some thoughts normalized cockfighting and cockfight gambling, but some viewed the game as an evil deed during the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the representation of Babad Pasanggrahan Madusita on modernity and hedonism. The hedonist lifestyle of the royal elite was influenced by modernity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. During the Paku Buwana X era, Surakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate carried out modernisation. This study used qualitative data analysis methods using the point of view of cultural studies. The research problems are how modernity characterises the lifestyle of hedonism in Babad Pasanggrahan Madusita, the form of representation, and the meaning of Babad Pasanggrahan Madusita. Several previous studies focused on aspects of a manuscript’s locality, moral values, education, culture, and religion. Therefore, this study has arranged to fill the gap in the study of the representation of modernity and hedonism in manuscripts influenced by discourses resulting from the interaction of Javanese culture and European culture. The results showed that Babad Pasanggrahan Madusita was written when modernity became the zeitgeist. At the end of the nineteenth century, hedonism was the lifestyle of the aristocrats, supported by modernisation. The form of Babad Pasanggrahan Madusita was represented by the narrative of the journey and recording of Pesanggrahan Madusita’s assets. The meaning was related to the progress and splendour during the period of Paku Buwana X as the Emperor of Java in the modern era.

Abstract

Islam entered Nusantara several centuries ago. The arrival of Islam in Nusantara influenced religiosity, thought, and a system of government that adopted Islamic values. One of the areas in Nusantara that Islamization influenced was Jambi sultanate. The influence of the Islamization process can be seen in several writings or literary works in the form of laws, literary works, or other writings. Therefore, this research looks at these two values from a historical point of view and Islamic values. The historical point of view is seen from the point of view of writing, the soul of the era, and the records recorded in the text. In contrast, Islamic values are seen from several elements, such as the Arabic script and other factors absorbed in writing. This paper uses the historical method with a philological approach. This study's results indicate that several local works in the Jambi area have undergone changes in content or several other elements. This can be seen in Tanjung Tanah text and Jambi Charter's text. In both manuscripts, Islamic influences can be seen in Arabic letters, greetings, some ornaments, and the text's contents. Some of these elements replaced the dominant role of the Hindu-Buddhist features that had developed in the previous decades in Jambi. Still, some local elements or Hindu-Buddhist influences were not immediately removed from the text.

Abstract

This research studies the landscape change of Mento Toelakan Plantation in Wonogiri(Periode). Mento Toelakan was a private plantation located in the Duchy of Mangkunegaran. The existence of this plantation was a sign of the triumph of the liberal economic era. This research used a historical method, landscape, and environmental history approach. Several problems discussed were (1) the causes of the Mento Toelakan area experiencing the landscape change, (2) the forms of landscape change, and (3) the impact of the landscape change in Mento Toelakan Plantation Periode. The results showed that the landscape at the Mento Toelakan Plantation underwent landscape changes in several stages. The reason was the rented land by European investors and the political dynamics after the end of Dutch colonialism. First, land rent converted forest areas in Mento Toelakan into plantations. Second, coffee cultivation introduced the local society to coffee culture. Third, changing coffee plantations to agave plantations introduced the local community to natural fiber processing. Fourth, the Japanese military occupation used Mento Toelakan land for military purposes. Finally, the Mento Toelakan plantation was taken over by the village community to become dry land and rice fields in the independence era. This indicates that many factors, such as capitalism, politics, human activities, and nature itself, influenced the changing landscape of Mento Toelakan.
