Abstract

This article aims at studying Javanese cultural revivalism of Mangkunegara VII, its function, and meaning, within the context of the rise of Islamism in the early 20th century. Mangkunegara VII was a Mangkunegaran ruler who actively participated in developing Javanese culture. When he was young, he was an essential figure in Budi Utomo, a movement organization that represented Javanese nationalism which was influenced by the complex relations between language awareness, colonialism, modernism, and Islamism. He was also involved in various Kejawen organizations. Using Michel Foucault's discourse theory, this paper argues that Javanese cultural revivalism is a Javanese nationalist success to overcome the excessive radicalism of Islamic discourse. When Islamism arose with their attacks against the abangan, he carried out counter-narratives through Javanese cultural organizations. As a ruler, he was successful in assuming legitimacy from the Mangkunegaran people as well as to influence the Dutch colonial government, and other Javanese nationalists as well.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the propaganda of bushido ideology in the film Djagalah Tanah Djawa published during the Japanese occupation era. Japan had limited natural and human resources to face the Allies in the Pacific War. Java was seen as a region capable of meeting Japanese needs. Propaganda was needed so that the Japanese internalized the bushido ideology to the Javanese population. Some research problems are (1) the form of bushido ideology deeply held by the Japanese people; (2) the function of Japanese propaganda on Java; (3) the meaning of bushido ideology represented by the Propaganda Film Djagalah Tanah Djawa during the Japanese occupation. The research used the historical method. The research shows that bushido ideology influenced the whole outlook of life and social practices of Japanese society, especially during the Pacific War. This ideology was internalized in the propaganda film Djagalah Tanah Djawa. Its function was to attract Javanese people to be willing to take part in the Japanese program. The meaning stated that victory over the Allied occupation could only be achieved if the Javanese people made sacrifices and cooperated with Japan to realize “New Java”.’ Thus, Japan could dominate the consciousness and unconsciousness of the Javanese population.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Dutch propaganda film Peoples of the Indies. The Dutch East Indies experienced a difficult period during the 1930s. The economic turbulence had an impact on political movements in the Dutch East Indies. Japanese propaganda was getting more and more alluring at that time. The Dutch saw Japan as a threat in the late 1930s. Therefore, the Dutch needed to ask the United States for public support to protect the Dutch East Indies. A propaganda film entitled Peoples of the Indies was made. This research will examine (1) the reasons why the Peoples of the Indies film needs to be made; (2) the multimodality of the Peoples of the Indies film; (3) the influence of the Peoples of the Indies film in the Dutch East Indies. This study uses the historical method with a multimodality approach. The results showed that the propaganda film, Peoples of the Indies, needed to counter Japanese propaganda. In multimodality, this film built on the discourse of democracy and multiculturalism in their colonies. The influence of the film on the colony was completely absent. The film's failure was because the Dutch ignored the importance of Indonesian public support to only target the United States and its allies. Meanwhile, the Indonesian public was already influenced by Japanese propaganda, even before the country succeeded in defeating ABDACOM and the Dutch East Indies Government. The Javanese also welcomed the arrival of Japan openly.
