Abstract

The goal of this article is to investigate whether using problem-based learning models can help middle-school students improve their English learning achievements. The type of research used is classroom action research, carried out in 3 cycles at SMPN 2 Karawang Barat. Each cycle consists of stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The techniques used are observation technique and test technique. The assessment instrument uses a test sheet and an observation sheet. The results showed that in cycle 1, the average score of 75-80 students can be compared significantly in cycle 2 with an increase in the average score of 80-90. Likewise, cycle 3 shows an increase in value of 90-100. In general, it can be concluded that there is an increase in English learning outcomes for students at SMPN 2 Karawang Barat after learning is carried out through the use of problem-based learning models. As a suggestion, the use of problem-based learning models can be used by teachers or educators to improve learning outcomes, especially in the field of English.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out how the picture series can be employed to improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text. This research was a classroom action research. This research consisted of two cycles; each consisted of four stages, namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were the Tenth Grade students of SMK Negeri 4 Penajam Paser Utara. In this research the researcher acted as the English teacher. The instruments used to collect the data in this research were an observation sheet, field notes, interview, students’ questionnaire and test. The data analysis of this study was descriptive qualitative and a bit of quantitative measurement to find the percentage of success. Based on the data analysis from each activity, it can be seen that there is a significant difference of the students’ achievement in the pretest and posttest. The students’ achievement in the posttest is higher than that of the pretest. The finding of the research indicated that the picture series could improve the students’ achievement in writing narrative text. The improvement can be seen from the increase of the students’ assessment from preliminary test, cycle one and cycle two. In preliminary study that just 10 students (37%) passed the preliminary test, while 27 students (63%) students were unsuccessful. There was just one student who got excellent grade. In the first cycle only thirteen students or 48% got less than 60, four students or 15% got only passing grade that is 60, eight students or 30% got 70, one students or 7% got 75. And in the second cycle there was significant improvement. There were just 3 students (11%) got less than 60. Another 24 students (89%) got higher than passing grade. It was suggested that the English teachers employ the picture series to improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text. However, to get the passing score of the test in this research should be planned carefully. Finally, other researchers, one suggested employing picture series would bring the students to the freedom of expressing their feeling in writing. It built their self confident automatically.

Abstract

Abstract. This research aimed to examine the application of the word chain game learning technique in improving students' English vocabulary skills. This research also intends to increase students' self-confidence and courage to speak in English, especially in XI MIPA 2, SMA Negeri 14 Makassar. This form of research is included in the form of descriptive research with a quantitative approach. This research uses a chain word game technique. This research is included in the type of classroom action research which consists of two cycles. Data collection techniques used are observation and tests. Quantitative data obtained from the test in the form of students' vocabulary scores were analyzed using the Excel program to find out the average score obtained from the results of the students' vocabulary test by comparing the scores obtained before and after the action was given. The results of this research showed that the English vocabulary skills of students in class XI MIPA 2 SMA Negeri 14 Makassar experienced an increase after the word chain game technique was applied to learning English. This can be seen from the average score of each cycle which continues to increase, from pre cycle to cycle I increased by 22%, this can be seen from the average score of 58 to 80 and from cycle I to cycle II increased by 10%, it also can be seen from an average score of 80 to 90. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the application of chain word games can improve students' vocabulary skills in English subjects. Learning English using the chain word game technique has also succeeded in making students more active and also more enthusiastic in learning English because they already have high confidence in making English sentences. Keywords: Vocabulary, Chain Word Game, English

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover the differences of learning strategies and learning achievements between students who take English courses and who do not take English courses in learning vocabulary. The researcher applied quantitative research causal-comparative type. There were 20 students from grade VIII SMPN 2 Sungguminasa academic year 2023/2024 chosen by purposive sampling. The data were obtained by giving questionnaire and vocabulary test. Then the data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and t-test. The results show the learning strategies has the probability value = 0.037 that was lower than the level of significance value = 0.05. It was proved by the average score of students who take English courses (102.90) that is bigger than students who do not take English courses (83.00). The learning achievements also has the probability value = 0.005 that was lower than the level of significance value = 0.05. It was also proved by mean score of students who take English courses (89.10) that is bigger than students who do not take English courses (58.60). In conclusion, there are differences of learning strategies and learning achievements between students who take English courses and those who do not take English courses in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

The research aimed to determine the teacher's perception of the seating arrangement in student learning concentration. This research has subject were 3 english teacher who teach at SMPN 27 Makassar. This type of research is designed as qualitative descriptive research. The subjects were chosen by using a purposive technique. Data collected from interviews. The data obtained has been processed in several ways: data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. Based on the result of the study, teachers' perceptions are divided into positive and negative perceptions. Positive perceptions include ease of application and the independent curriculum, helping understand the character and learning styles, the excellent and effective seating arrangement in learning English and understanding the ability to learn comprehension. Negative perceptions include a lack of learning concentration, limited capability to catch power, a lack of clear understanding of the material, and harmful influences that affect learning concentration. Based on the study's results, the teacher's perception equally dominates between positive and negative perceptions. Seating arrangements are, in fact, very influential on student learning concentration.

Abstract

This research aims to find out English teachers’ perceptions of school readiness in using the Merdeka Curriculum. The subject of this research was two English teachers of SMAN 3 Makassar. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. An interview was used as the main instrument to collect the data. The results of this research showed that the two English teachers of SMAN 3 Makassar perceived that SMAN 3 Makassar is ready to use the Merdeka Curriculum due to: (1) SMAN 3 Makassar teachers already have a good understanding of the Merdeka curriculum., (2) the human resources strengthening of SMAN 3 Makassar teachers, and (3) the facilities/infrastructure at SMAN 3 Makassar to be used to fulfill their duty to strengthening students’ competence and developing character under the values of Pancasila. Moreover, the two English teachers tend to view the Merdeka Curriculum as what is needed for students in Indonesia due to its policies to make the students fulfill the Profil Pelajar Pancasila Project (P5), which are: (1) devoted to the Almighty God and possess noble character, (2) independent, (3) cooperative, (4) internationally diverse, (5) critical thinking, and (6) creative. Besides, the students can also choose the subjects that correspond with their interests.
