Abstract

This research aims to find out Is there any significant differences between the impact of traditional teaching method and using Index Card Match in teaching English vocabulary at the First Year Students of SMA HANG TUAH 3 MATARAM and to find out does using Index Card Match have a positive effect on students’ vocabulary knowledge. The sample of this research is 40 students. The kind of this research is experimental research. The students are divided into two groups such as experimental group and control group. Then the research subjects are pre-tested to know their prior vocabulary mastery. After the treatment, the sample is post-tested to know their recent vocabulary mastery as the result of the treatment. The scores in both pre-test and post-test are taken as the main data of the research. The data is analyzed by using t-test.

Abstract

This paper tries to analysethe linguistic features used in cigarette advertisementsand their relations with social and cultural development as well as the power showed bythe discourse used in cigarette advertisements. The research uses descriptive qualitativemethod by using content or document analysis. The analysis adopts Fairclough’s CriticalDiscourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The result shows that many printed cigarette adscan often be interpreted negatively because their ideas are often related to capitalism andnot reflect the eastern culture. The company in fact should build positive image in theminds of public. They should not only make the advertisements as catchy as possible butalso consider about the effect of the language in the public interpretation. The ads vieweras consumers should aware of the manipulating language of advertisement that can affectthe social and cultural aspects.Keywords:Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, Cigarette Advertisement

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the second semester students? ability in using elliptical construction at the second semester students of English Department of IKIP Mataram 2016. Descriptive method is used as the design of this research. This research is indended to analize whether the second semester students of English Department of IKIP Mataram 2016 are able to use elliptical constructions or not and to analize percentage of ability of students in using elliptical constructions. The population of this research is the second semester students of English Department of IKIP Mataram Year 2016 (270 students). The researchers used cluster random sampling to select the sample. The total number of sample is 40 students. Technique of data collection is conducted by using grammar test and questioner. In analyzing the data, the researchers use statistic analysis, refers to descriptive statistic, it is enable the researchers to organize, to summarize, and to describe the observation. Furthermore, in describing the data, the researchers organize the data into frequency distribution. Then, measure the mean scores to find out a single score that can give the indication of the ability of the 40 students on an achievements test. For this purpose, the researchers find out the mean scores. The finding of this study revealed that : (1) The ability of second year students of English Department of IKIP Mataram year 2016  in using elliptical constructions is on low level, it can be seen from the mean score of the students which is 12,1 and this score is on low level. (2) The percentages of qualification for the second year students of English Department of IKIP Mataram year 2016  in using elliptical constructions are on low percentages, it can be seen from the rate percentage of the ability of students in using elliptical constructions. (3) The second semester students of English Department of IKIP Mataram year 2016 able to use elliptical constructions in small number of students. however, most of the students have lack interested about the way lecturer conduct elliptical construction.

Abstract

Berkembang pariwisata di Nusa Tenggara Barat di tandai dengan pemberian anugrah destinasi wisata halal terbaik dunia, sudah menjadi kaharusan untuk menyiapkan SDM dibidang pariwisata dengan sungguh-sungguh sehingga SDM akan tetap mempertahankan anugrah tersebut. Salah satu bentuk partisifasi perguruan tinggi adalah dengan memberikan pembekalan dan pelatihan di masyarakat sekolah dan masyarakat pelaku wisata melalui kegiatan PKM. Tujuan PKM ini adalah melatih siswa jurusan pariwisata di SMK Negeri 1 Batulayar Lombok Barat untuk menjadi pemandu wisata. Kegiatan ini dilakukan di SKM Negeri 1 batu layar Metode kegiatan adalah cermah, diskusi dan praltik dengan tahapan pemberian materi, praktik, pendampingan dan evaluasi.  Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah pengetahuan dan pemahaman siswa meningkat tentang menjadi pemandu pariwisata, keterampilan-keterampilan dalam memandu meningkat dilihat dari kemampuan mereka dalam menerapkan strategi-strategi pemandu wisata yang profesional. Meskipun ada peningkatan sebagai calon pemandu para siswa masih kekuranga dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa inggris, sehingga kedepan perlu adanya pelatihan dan pendampingan lebih banyak, sehingga saat mereka lulus dari sekolah mereka siap menjadi pemandu yang profesional.Tour Guide Training for Tourism Department Students at SMKN 1 Batulayar West LombokAbstractThe development of tourism in West Nusa Tenggara is marked by the awarding of the best halal tourist destination in the world, it has become a necessity to prepare HR in the tourism sector seriously so that HR will continue to maintain the gift. One form of university participation is to provide training and training in the school community and tourism community through PKM activities. The purpose of this PKM is to train students majoring in tourism at SMK Negeri 1 Batulayar West Lombok to become a tour guide. This activity was carried out in SKM Negeri 1 Batu Layar. The method of activity was a reflection, discussion and practice with the stages of providing material, practice, assistance and evaluation. The results of this activity are increased students' knowledge and understanding about becoming a tourism guide, and the skills in guiding are increasing in terms of their abilities to implement professional tour guide strategies. Although there are improvements as prospective guides students still lack communication in using English, so in the future there needs to be more training and mentoring, so that when they graduate from school they are ready to become professional guides.

Abstract

This research is about difficulties faced by the students in writing thesis at eight semester of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat. The purpose of the research is to describe the students’ difficulties in writing the thesis. The participants of this research were eight semester students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Sumatera Barat that consist of 15 students. This research is a descriptive research. It is aimed at describing things as the way and also analyzing the interrelationship of the data. The instrument used in this research was questioner and interview. The questioner is used to find out the students’ difficulties in writing thesis while the interview is used to support the data gotten from questioner. The result of this research shows that there are 13 difficulties faced by students in writing thesis. And the most frequent difficulties is “pouring ideas into scientific writing”. All of the students (15) faced this difficulty.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss the use of teacher questioning in the class. From the related literature and from the finding of several studies done by some experts, it can be concluded that teachers should ask variety of questions in their class. The questions should be the combination of high-level questions and low-level questions in order to address the different level of students’ proficiency. Asking questions properly will make them more active and confident and indirectly build their communicative competence. Abstract

Covid-19 berdampak begitu nyata bagi pekerja sektor pariwisata di Lombok Barat. Sebagian besar hotel di Kabupaten Lombok Barat yang sudah memberlakukan cuti hingga merumahkan pekerjanya. Sedangkan pekerja kontrak dan tetap diberikan waktu kerja yang diatur secara bergiliran. Bagi Pekerja yang dirumahkan karena terdampak covid, tentunya berdiamdiri dirumah tanpa mengasah skill, bukanlah menjadi pilihan bijak. Sebagai pelaku pariwisata, Keterampilan yang mereka miliki pun terbatas pada Pekerjaan seperti Tukang Kebun, Cleaning Service, Pelayan Restaurant, Tukang Ojek, Penjual Souvenir, Pembuat Kerajinan dari Kayu dan Bambu. Terlebih lagi dimasa pandemi seperti saat ini, setiap pekerja dituntut untuk memiliki daya saing yang mempuni sehingga dapat bertahan dalam industri pariwisata. Hal inilah yang menggerakkan Tim Pengabdian kami untuk berperean aktif dalam Pelatihan Upskilling bagi Pekerja Sektor Pariwisata yang terdampak Covid-19. Sehingga diharapkan dapat mengoptimalkan skill mereka khususnya English Speaking Skill sehingga pada saat mereka kembali bekerja dan meningkatkan penghasilan mereka. Dengan menerapkan Metode Pelatihan yang menarik dan didukung oleh materi pelatihan yang up-to-dated serta disampaikan oleh para pakar dari Tim yang berpengalaman dan profesional dalam bidang pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Materi yang disampaikan dalam Pelatihan ini antara lain materi menarik dan interaktif terkait English for Business, English for Hospitality, dan English for General Communications. Dari angket diisi oleh seluruh pekerja dan hasil dari angket kepuasan secara umum menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan PkM yang telah dilaksanakan dirasakan bermanfaat bagi para pekerja. Materidisampaikan dengan baik dan menarik. Pembicara yang dihadirkan juga dinilai baik.

Abstract

Kurangnya pengetahuan tentang bahasa Inggris sangat berpengaruh besar pada minat belajar siswa. Guru mempunyai peranan yang krusial dalam menyajikan pembelajaran yang interaktif dan menyenangkan bagi siswa. Akan tetapi guru masih terlihat enggan untuk menyisipkan metode pembelajaran yang kreatif sehingga  siswa dalam kesehariannya tidak mengenal bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan kurang berminat belajar bahasa Inggris. Siswa tidak fasih dalam berbahasa Inggris selama proses belajar dan mengajar karena malu untuk mengucapkan kosakata berbahasa Inggris dihadapan teman kelasnya. Permasalahan yang dipecahkan dalam program pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah bagaimana penerapan Tongue Twister dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris para siswa, dan menemukan sejauh mana kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa dalam menggunakan Tongue Twister. Siswa diharapkan dapat memiliki pengucapan yang baik, mencapai skor standar, dan aktif dalam berbicara menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Metode berupa pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain pre-experimental. Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah cluster random sampling. Populasinya adalah siswa kelas VII MTS Negeri 3 Lombok Barat yang terdiri dari 60 siswa dan sampel 20 siswa dengan prosedur yaitu memberikan speaking test, terdiri atas pre-test dan post-test. Skor tes diolah menggunakan T-test. Hasil adalah rerata skor pre-test pada pengucapan (pronunciation) adalah 3,9 dan post-test adalah 4,4. Sedangkan rerata skor pada kelancaran (fluency) adalah 4.15 dan post-test adalah 4,6. Total hasil pengucapan (pronunciation) dan kelancaran (fluency) atau X1 adalah 80.5 dan post-test atau X2 adalah 90. Hasil pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan capaian pengucapan siswa yang diajar dengan teknik tongue twister.
