Abstract

A method for determination of carbofuran pesticides residue utilizing extraction by sonication has been developed for spike soil sample collected from horticulture farms in Lembang, North Bandung Regency, Indonesia. The simple, reliable, and cost-effective method was performed without any clean up prior injection to HPLC-UV. The method was validated by evaluating its detection limit, linearity, repeatability, recovery, and matrix effect. The detection limit of the method is 0.50 mg/kg. The linearity of the method is very good (r=0.99677) for concentration range of 1.0 to 5.0 mg/kg. The repeatability of the method is acceptable (CV value of 2.56 %). The fortified recoveries are acceptable, ranging from 93.44 to 101.03%. Statistical analysis shows that the matrix effect is insignificant to the method. The application of the method is able to offer a minimization of waste, miniaturization of method, and increased the safety for the operator as required for Green Analytical Chemistry.

Abstract

Title : Effect of Growing Media and NPK Fertilizer on Growth of Shorea Javanica. Cibodas botanical garden – LIPI had compost product based on organic waste material (litter, grass, twigs, and fruit) which were collected from garden. Compost was produced by two methods : using katalek bioactivator and natural compost without bioactivator. Utilization of compost as growing media at nursery unit botanical garden was not optimal. The objective of this research was to determine the ability of compost from botanical garden as a growing media for seedling collection at Cibodas botanical garden. This study was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RAB) with six treatments and four replications using Shorea javanica as plants indicator. Three types of growing media (top soil, natural compost and katalek compost) were applied for the treatment with the addition or non addition of NPK fertilizer. However, control treatment was made from top soil without addition of NPK. The data showed that both natural compost and katalek compost were demonstrated better result than top soil growing media. Katalek compost without addition of NPK fertilizer gave significantly different result at enhancement of plant height, leaf number, and dry weight if compared with control.

Abstract

Kata kunci : Vicia faba, biokoagulan, limbah cair industri pulp dan kertas EFECTIVITY OF Vicia faba AS BIOCOAGULANT FOR PULP AND PAPER WASTE WATER ABSTRACT The Study about Efectivity of broad bean (Vicia faba) as a biocoagulant for pulp and paper mill waste water were conducted. Coagulation-flocculation is an important process in wastewater treatment that are used to remove colloid and suspended particles. The objective of this research was to determine the ability and the optimum concentration of Vicia faba. The observed  parameters during this research were Turbidity, Total Suspended Solid, Total Hardness and Chemical Oxygen Demand. The study was conducted using Randomize Complete Design with five replications and five level concentrations (0,02%; 0,04%; 0,06%; 0,08%; 0,1%). The data show  that the optimum concentration of Vicia faba was around 0,1%. Vicia faba at concentration 0,1% effectively removes turbidity over 98,5%, 74,8%, for Total Suspended Solid, 60,6% of Chemical Oxygen Demand and 41,6% for total hardness. Abstract

Severe river pollution creates a stressful environment for aquatic organisms, causing disturbances to their health and leading to their extinction. Thus, in this study, the stress responses of tolerant (Oreochromis niloticus) and sensitive (Cyprinus carpio) fish to river pollution in the Citarum River, Indonesia were investigated. The two groups of fish were exposed to varying levels and lengths of water pollution, their blood was sampled, and stress responses were identified. The red blood cells (RBC) count, haemoglobin (HGB), haematocrit (HCT), white blood cells (WBC) count, blood glucose levels, and derived haematological indices such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), were measured. Significant changes in these indices, with tendential changes in RBC and HCT, were observed, indicating that stress responses had occurred in both groups of fish. The sensitive fish recorded more pronounced changes in their haematological activities, with greater amounts of blood parameters being altered in response to water pollution exposure. This result suggested that the sensitive fish were more susceptible to environmental stressors and were, therefore, more vulnerable to extinction in a polluted natural environment.
