Abstract

Over the past two decades, the trend of fatwa requests has increased. Fatwas issued by certain individuals or organizations are used as references in daily life. Likewise in Indonesia through the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) where the desire for asking fatwas is almost the same as the desire for implementing the fatwa itself. Including fatwas related to religious sects such as Ahmadiyya which are often become victims of discrimination and assault. Studies of this research focuses on texts fatwa issued by MUI on Ahmadiyya sect in 1980 and 2005. This study departs from the claims of some researchers who think that the fatwa had a strong correlation with actions and violent behavior that befell the Ahmadiyya Community. Use an anthropological linguistic approach, this study show Jemaah Ahmadiyya considers that fatwas are opinion. As usual opinion, he must be respected. Disagreement with an opinion is common. Because opinions are not binding. Such a pedestal of thinking simultaneously raises attitudes and responses that tend to appear to 'accept what we are'. However, if examined more closely, there are a number of efforts which although they are 'sporadic' and are not interpreted as a specific strategy to counter the actual heretical labelling efforts carried out by the Jemaah Ahmadiyya.

Abstract

The Regulation of Ministry of Education and Culture No. 23 of 2017 concerning School Day resulted in a tremendous wave of protest. The public takes part in different sides, the pro and the contra. This research uses a hermeneutical paradigm with causal historical analysis. The results of the study show that the refusal among the pesantren community is based on a robust doctrine of the fiqh rules as a form of orthodoxy and adherence to the values taught by the pesantren. Second, the government is playing with language on its policy. In the context of full-day school regulation, the government still uses euphemism as a strategy of education political ethic. Third, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has a very central role in rejecting the five-day school policy.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the construction of Ariel Heryanto’s postmodernism ideas. Through in-depth observational studies on several articles, especially on the book entitled Identity and Pleasure: The Politics of Indonesian Screen Culture, this article concludes that post-modern epistemology is the foundation of Ariel’s analysis in seeing the development of popular culture in contemporary Indonesia. Ariel Heryanto used the postmodernism epistemology to see indications of popular culture. Indonesian identity which concerns to the meaning of being Indonesian Muslims, identity of minority (being Left and PKI), and expressions of choosing enjoyment while simultaneously affirming and building the identity in the context of middle-class Muslim fondness for K-Pop and K-Drama and other screen-based popular culture. Ariel Heryanto has succeeded in reading the phenomenon of a generation that try to redefine how to be a good Muslim, how to be a good citizen and at the same time remain a member of the global producer and consumer community.

Abstract

Some Islamic movements in Indonesia, which make the fatwas issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) a reference for their actions, recently found their momentum after the defense movements called 411 and 212. The proponents of these movements are called Gerakan Nasional Pengawal Fatwa Majelis Ulama Indonesia (GNPF-MUI), which means The National Movement of the Guardians of the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Fatwa. By the employment of a qualitative approach coupled with a historical-causal paradigm, this article examines the main question, which asks if the proponents of these movements substantially understand the fatwas they defend. The results of the research showed that the fatwas held a dilemmatic position. While some movements have insisted on making them a “sacred opinion” that must be protected and guarded, people do not substantially comprehend the fatwas they defend. This problem is caused by the cultural basis of the Indonesian society, which put more preference on orality than literality or, explicitly, written tradition.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the linguistic violence in the Indonesian Ulama Council’s fatwa texts on Ahmadiyah. The data in this study is in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and discourses from the MUI fatwa texts in 1980 and 2005 on Ahmadiyah. Some words contain linguistic violence such as “deviant”, “infidel”, and “a state threaten”. This study concludes two forms of linguistic violence in those fatwas: the subtle and abusive forms of violence. In the subtle form, the language is operated to dominate other parties. In addition, the language is also used as an offensive and abusive expression carried out consciously in a discourse. This is used to attack other parties and as a tool to hurt others.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the most populous countries exposed to Covid-19 with a high mortality rate. The pandemic has been in Indonesia since March 2020, but before the Covid-19 virus was officially declared to enter Indonesia, the Indonesian government previously took this threat lightly. It showed that the Indonesian government was using political language such as disaster communication. Some disparaging comments left public officials. This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis techniques. The primary data is derived from President Joko Widodo’s speech at Bogor Palace and the tweets of @kemenkes @BNPB and @Jokowi’s Twitter accounts related to Covid-19. This research examines how the Indonesian government communicates its policies in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this research is intended to reveal the narrative developed by the Indonesian government in campaigning for policies to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that there are doubts from the government in determining the policies to be taken to overcome the spread of Covid-19. The narrative developed by the government—like the phrase “new normal” and “enggak mudik” phrase—is a narrative that is intended to create calm, even though it can endanger public health.

Abstract

This study uses an anthropolinguistic approach to examine two Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) fatwa texts regarding Ahmadiyya. First, it shows that there are significant differences between the 1980 and 2005 fatwas. Second, in terms of their lexicon, the 1980 fatwa uses the phrase "di luar Islam" (outside Islam), while the 2005 fatwa uses the phrase "berada di luar Islam" (located outside Islam). Third, there is an emphasis on the responsibilities of the government within the 2005 fatwa on Ahmadiyya. Fourth, the 1980 fatwa was directed at the Qadiyan Ahmadiyya, while the 2005 fatwa was directed at all elements of Ahmadiyya. Fifth, the form of the 2005 fatwa is reminiscent of a legal proclamation. This strongly affected the violence experienced by Ahmadiyya, as the fatwa was no longer presented as an opinion, but as a legally binding decision.
