Abstract

Silicon (Si) based power devices have been employed in most high power applications since decades ago. However, nowadays, most major applications demand higher efficiency and power density due to various reasons. The previously well-known Si devices, unfortunately, have reached their performance limitation to cover all those requirements. Therefore, Silicon Carbide (SiC) with its unique and astonishing characteristic has gained huge attention, particularly in the power electronics field. Comparing both, SiC presents a remarkable ability to enhance overall system performance and the transition from Si to SiC is crucial. With regard to its importance, this paper provides an overview of the characteristics, advantages, and outstanding capabilities in various application for SiC devices. Furthermore, it is also important to disclose the system design challenges, which are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract

Electric market always prefers to use full capacity of existing power system to control the costs. Flexible alternate current transmission system (FACTS) devices introduced by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to increase the usable capacity of power system. Placement of FACTS controllers in power system is a critical issue to reach their maximum advantages. This article focused on the application of FACTS devices to increase the stability of power system using artificial intelligence. Five types of series and shunt FACTS controllers are considered in this study. Continuation power flow (CPF) analysis used to calculate the collapse point of power systems. Controlling parameters of FACTS devices including their locations are determined using real number representation based genetic algorithm (RNRGA) in order to improve the secure margin of operating condition of power system. The 14 and 118 buses IEEE standard test systems are utilized to verify the recommended method. The achieved results manifestly proved the effectiveness of proposed intelligent method to increase the stability of power system by determining the optimum location and size of each type of FACTS devices.

Abstract

This study presents the implementation of adaptive notch filter (ANF) as reference signal extraction for shunt active power filter (APF) in indirect current control (ICC) and direct current control (DCC) modes for three phase system. The ANF functions to filter the signal that inputted to it by producing a fundamental signal and harmonics signal. The advantage of applying the ANF algorithm is based on its simple design that giving the ANF advantages to be utilize in microcontroller. The performance of the ANF is validated though MATLAB simulation in ICC dan DCC configurations. Based on the simulation results, the ANF is capable to work efficiently for both ICC and DCC modes, but in term of efficiency, the ICC mode is clearly showing a better harmonics mitigation result. Base on the result also it shown that the ANF is capable of mitigate the harmonics below the standard required by the IEEE 519-92. The application of ANF is useful to be applied due to its simple design and filtering method.

Abstract

This paper presents the Least Mean Square (LMS) noise canceller using uniform poly-phase digital filter bank to improve the noise can-cellation process. Analysis filter bank is used to decompose the full-band distorted input signal into sub-band signals. Decomposition the full-band input distorted signal into sub-band signals based on the fact that the signal to noise ratio (S/N) is inversely proportional to the signal bandwidth. Each sub-band signal is fed to individual LMS algorithm to produce the optimal sub-band output. Synthesis filter bank is used to compose the optimal sub-band outputs to produce the final optimal full-band output. In this paper, m-band uniform Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) digital filter bank has been used because its computational complexity is much smaller than the direct implementation of digital filter bank. The simulation results show that the proposed method provides the efficient performance with less and smooth error signal as compared to conventional LMS noise canceller.

Abstract

Partial discharge (PD) measurements either through electrical or acoustic emission approaches can be subjected to noises that arise from different sources. In this study, the examination on the denoising methods for electrical and acoustic emission PD signal is carried out. The PD was produced through needle-plane electrodes configuration. Once the voltage reached to 30 kV, the electrical and acoustic emission PD signals were recorded and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) was introduced. These signals were then denoised using moving average (MA), finite impulse response (FIR) low/high-pass filters, and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) methods. The denoising methods were evaluated through ratio to noise level (RNL), normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) and normalized correlation coefficient (NCC). In addition, the computation times for all denoising methods were also recorded. Based on RNL, NRMSE and NCC indexes, the performances of the denoising methods were analyzed through normalization based on the coefficient of variation (𝐶𝑣). Based on the current study, it is found that DWT performs well to denoise the electrical PD signal based on the RNL and NRMSE 𝐶𝑣 index while MA has a good denoising NCC and computation time 𝐶𝑣 index for acoustic emission PD signal.
