Abstract

Task-Based Learning has proven as a good approach in teaching English. The approach has been implemented in teaching language, especially English integrated skills. This is enough for researcher to do the study about implementation of TBL to training students mastery for language’s macro skills. The material which taken as the topic was natural disaster. Therefore, it was easy to learn for the students as they had experienced the event through their environment. The objective of this research is to find out if TBL effectives in teaching the students about integrated skills and to know how Task-Based Learning improves students’ language abilities. This research uses Classroom Action Research with two cycles. There are several phases in this research design, namely: (a) planning, (b) action, (c) observing and, (d) reflection. The subject is class of XI NKN 2 at vocational high school in Surabaya. Based on this study, it was proven that Task-Based Learning could improve the eleventh grader students’ score which in the good level with 80% students passed the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) after the conduction of cycle 2. This study resulted in Task-Based Learning was able to help students enggage in learning four language skills in the same time while being active during the learning process.

Abstract

Politic is always related to activities that influence the action and policies in government or society. This activity will gain or keep power on it. This research aimed to analyze Donald Trump’s utterances in his presidential campaign at November 16th, 2015 in Knoxville Convention Center. There are four objective of the research that must be answered; 1) The utterances that illustrated political discourse in Donald Trump Speech; 2) The way he delivered his political discourse; 3) The aim of the utterances; 4) Effect of the utterance to people. Descriptive qualitative was applied as the method of the research and the data of the research were the utterances that illustrated Donald Trump’s political discourse. The utterances were being analyzed using CDA’s Van Dijk supported by Fairclough and Wodak theory. The result showed his way to deliver his ideology in gaining power where in power; there is an ability to control people which in line with his purpose to win American’s heart. Trump’s political strategies succeeded to gain many supports that made him elected as the presidential candidate from the Republic party.

Abstract

Language attitude study has proven to reveal students’ success and failure in learning language. Attitude is not innate, but learned. Students learn to grow and improve their positive language attitudes towards foreign languages through certain programs at schools. The aim of this research is to investigate the language attitude of students in an Indonesian Islamic boarding school towards English as a foreign Language and to describe why they have the attitude. The respondents were 49 students of 2nd grade of senior high school classes from HAC (High-Achieving Class) and LAC (Low-Achieving Class). The design of this research was mixed method using explanatory sequential design. To obtain the data, the instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of cognitive, affective and conative components of language attitudes. Interview was carried out to acquire the reason the students had the attitudes. The finding was both HAC and LAC students’ language attitudes were mostly positive (91.83%) in cognitive, affective and conative language attitudes. Some (8.17%) had different language attitudes. They showed positive language attitudes, but acquired low scores and showed negative language attitudes, but acquired high scores. The interview revealed this phenomenon.

Abstract

Bahan ajar keterbacaan berorientasi direct instruction adalah bahan ajar yang dikembangkan dengan menggunakan model pengembangan Fenrich. Orientasi direct instruction dalam bahan ajar didominasi dengan penggunaan tahapan DI yang dikembangkan oleh Eggen dan Kauchak. Tahapan tersebut terdiri atas introduksi, presentasi, latihan terbimbing, dan latihan mandiri. Selanjutnya, Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kualitas bahan ajar yang terdiri atas kevalidan, kepraktisan, dan keefektifan. Untuk mengetahui kualitasnya, bahan ajar diuji cobakan pada mahasiswa PBSI FKIP UMSurabaya dengan menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Sejalan dengan metode, teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah angket dan tes. Berdasarkan hasil pembahasan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahan ajar memiliki rata-rata persentase sebesar 80%. Presentase tersebut diintepretasikan menjadi valid atau layak. Untuk kepraktisan, bahan ajar dinilai 83% atau sangat baik oleh mahasiswa. Selanjutnya, ketuntasan hasil belajar siswa juga mnunjukkan tuntas atau semua mahasiswa dapat menyelesaikan tugas dengan baik.

Abstract

Refusal often ends in misunderstanding and even anger, so people organize and maintain their refusal to avoid face threats. The people of Surabaya use the native Surabaya language, which is known as an open and blunt language, so a rejection strategy is assumed similar to this characteristic. This thesis aims to analyze what types of refusal strategies of native Surabaya young people use and how they use them in English. It examines how respondents refused invitation, request, offer or suggestion in various situations. This is a qualitative study with 21 native Surabaya young people, the EFL learners completing a Written Discourse Completion Test or WDCT, which contains several scenarios based on power and social distance. Data were analyzed using SPSS and the results showed that although the respondents came from Surabaya, which is known for its outspoken speaking style, in fact only 12.6% respondents used the direct refusal strategy, conversely most respondents used indirect refusal strategy (79.7%)  in expressing their rejection, while the least used strategy was Adjunct (7.7%). The respondents continued to use the indirect refusal strategies, even though they had more power and less closeness or have the equal power and closeness to the interlocutors.

Abstract

Online learning is increasingly used around the world due to covid-19. Therefore, this research aims to investigate on conversation analysis that focuses on how the teacher’s question which can engage students’ interaction in classroom. It is known that it is very complex in engaging students ‘in online class, especially first grade primary students. While prior studies regarding online class interaction has not been scrutinized in detail regarding how teacher’s question and students’ responses. Therefore, this study eager to analyzes the teacher and students’ conversation in online class. This study employed qualitative method. The data collected from a series of classroom zoom video. In addition, the data analysis has three stages. First, reduction the utterance, it is based on the question formatted types. Second, coding the data and analyzed the data based on question formatted types. The third is concluding in order to find in the questions-formatted types in online classroom. The types are preserve the sequential implication, slightly alter the sequential implications, following student’s question, and deviant case. The result illustrates in this research is slightly later the sequential implications as the only type which occurred in first grade primary school online classes. It occurred because in online classes it is very demanding to engage student’s attention in online classroom. It is therefore teacher gave questions and pointed directly to students. Consequently, this study implicates on how the pedagogical insight in teaching online learning.

Abstract

Learning foreign language needs several ways. One of the ways is collocation. Collocation is considerably prominent in learning foreign language due to the influence in language comprehension. The high proficiency in collocation reflects high proficiency in foreign language comprehension. It is therefore this study aims to scrutinize the collocation which used in twelve grade English Textbook. this study applied corpus software, namely antconc. the first step for collecting the data, was changing the data from pdf to txt and process it in antcont for finding the top twenty wordlist. Then, find the top twenty sentences based on the lexical which find from wordlist. Based on the antcont process, the finding illustrates that only two types of collocation which occurred in twelve grade English textbook. It can be reflected that twelve grade English textbook limited provided collocation. Although, it is very crucial as learning material plays significant role in teaching learning process. As a result, this study is estimated to gain insight about in teaching English as foreign language, especially teaching media in textbook.

Abstract

Learning language is automatically learning the culture. However, there is limited book in learning Indonesia language which is discussed about culture. This article purpose is to find out what was the attitude of students towards the textbooks adopted. Hence, it is examined by using qualitative since this study analyzed the phenomena which occurred in Indonesian Language Learning for Foreigner class (BIPA). The Subject of the study is BIPA students which consists of 6 foreigner students. The data is taken from the questionnaire and analyzed based on the student’s opinion. The result presents the students opinion towards the textbooks is excellent.
