Abstract

Reading plays an important role in process of language. Selfefficacy belief about reading, access to interesting to read English text and interaction with media tool is factors that motivate students to read. The aims of the research are: 1) to reveal the students’ perception to use of digital text in learning reading; and 2) to reveal students’ motivation to use of digital text in learning reading. Reseacher used case study as the research design. The participants in this research is the students of X TITL (Teknik Instalasi Tenaga Listrik) D grade one of vocational high school in Majalengka. Data collection techniques were observation, questionnaire and interview. The findings of the research showed that students have 75% as good motivation, and they agreed advantages of digital text as a digital learning reading but there are faced the problem in reading like the vocabulary, the condition of class and ability to do exercise make them difficult. The conclusion of this research are students claim that using digital text can help them in learning reading and given the positive responses about digital text. Digital text is different from print paper where some of advantages they feel such as digital text give them different way in learning, pictures in digital learning make them more understood and interested, then digital text more weight less and lighter. Furthermore, digital text can increase students’ motivation.Keyword: Reading, Digital Text, Perception, Motivation

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing coronavirus impact expressions in Tempo English magazine by using theory of connotative meaning from Leech as the grand theory and from Hook as the supporting theory. The focus is on two kinds of connotative meaning, namely, positive and negative connotative meaning. The objectivities of this research are to find out and to explain the use of negative and connotative meaning. The research is qualitative by which helps the researcher to describe the data being studied. In analyzing qualitative data, there are various kinds of methods, including qualitative content analysis. The use of a qualitative content analysis in this research is to know, to describe, and to analyze the use of connotative meaning applied in Tempo English magazine, April 14, 2020 edition. The result of this research is that Tempo English magazine uses many connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions. There are 15 expressions as negative connotative meaning and 12 expressions as positive connotative meaning. The findings indicates that the use negative connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions in Tempo English magazine are associated with threats in economy sector and associated with inappropriate government policies in an effort to prevent the spread of covid-19 as well as the impact of pandemic in many sectors. Besides, the use positive connotative meaning of coronavirus impact expressions in Tempo English magazine are associated with solutions to avoid spread of Covid-19 as well as solutions to avoid the impact of pandemic, and associated with the government’s responsibility and seriousness in dealing with preventing the spread of coronavirus as well as in dealing with the impact of coronavirus. Keywords: semantics; connotative meaning; coronavirus impact

Abstract

Penerjemahan teks-audio visual atau dikenal dengan istilah subtitling merupakan penerjemahan unsur verbal dan non-verbal dari unsur-unsur semiotik yang berupa channel atau mode yang terdapat dalam teks multichannel/multimodal/polysemiotic (writing, image, sound effects and speech) ke dalam unsur verbal dalam bentuk mode writing yang berupa caption yang terintegrasi dan sinkron dengan unsur-unsur semiotik dalam wujud mode/channel tersebut. Subtitling merupakan penerjemahan conventionalized, diasemiotic dan intersemiotic. Produk hasil subtitling, subtitle, memiliki batasan waktu dan ruang yang membuat banyak sekali pertimbangan yang harus dilakukan untuk melakukan penerjemahan ini, selain pertimbangan utama yaitu interaksi dan integritas unsur-unsur semiotik dalam teks audio-visual dalam memproduksi makna.

Abstract

The process of translation is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is much harder. The translation result must fulfill certain criteria namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. During the process of translation, the translator surely encounters some difficulties or barrier. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the students’ strategies in overcoming the translation difficulties. The method of the research was a descriptive case-study. The subject of the research was 10 students of English Education Department at Universitas Majalengka. The data was collected from the translation test, questionnaire, and interview. Most of the data analysis of this research was conveyed in non-statistical analysis. However, the researcher provided data to see the percentage and frequencies to support the research. The results showed that the students encounter difficulties in 1) translating words that are not in dictionary; 2) translating ambiguous words; 3) translating long sentences; 4) translating phrases; 5) translating complex sentence; and 6) translating idioms. In translating idioms, 50% used literal translation, 30% used discursive creation, and 20% used established equivalence. In translating ambiguous words, 90% used modulation, and 10 % used literal translation. In translating phrases, 40% used reduction, 20% used discursive creation, 10% used established equivalence, and 30% used generalization.

Abstract

Abstract Motivation has a very important role in learning. This motivation leds to enthusiams in learning and can improve learning outcomes. This research aims to find out what are the media and strategies that teachers use to motivating students in learning English online. The second aims is to find out how the students involvement in learning English online. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The participants in this research are three of English teachers and three of 10th grade students in SMK PUI Majalengka. The data were collected by observation and interview. The result showed that teachers often using WhatsApp during learning English online. Then, the strategies used by teachers to students motivation for learning English online were reminding the study schedule, giving a games or quizz, giving more interesting materials, and giving Intermezzo. Besides, student involvement in online learning is quite good. Regarding the media used during online learning of English, two students stated that the students not satisfied using WhatsApp, and the students want to use Zoom. Meanwhile, one student stated that satisfied using WhatsApp, but the student want to use E-learning with added video features. However, WhatsApp received a positive response from students. Students stated that WhatsApp made it very easy for them to access materials anytime and anywhere.

Abstract

Penerjemahan teks-audio visual atau dikenal dengan istilah subtitling merupakan penerjemahan unsur verbal dan non-verbal dari unsur-unsur semiotik yang berupa channel atau mode yang terdapat dalam teks multichannel/multimodal/polysemiotic (writing, image, sound effects and speech) ke dalam unsur verbal dalam bentuk mode writing yang berupa caption yang terintegrasi dan sinkron dengan unsur-unsur semiotik dalam wujud mode/channel tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menerjemahkan lagu-lagu berbahasa inggris di youtube yang berbasis pendidikan karakter anak usia dini, yang meliputi identifikasi lagu-lagu anak berbahasa inggris dalam youtube yang berbasis pendidikan karakter usia dini, penerapan teknik- teknik penerjemahan lagu-lagu anak berbahasa inggris ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia yang berdampak pada kualitas  hasil terjemahan dengan melibatkan rater dan menshare kembali hasil terjemahannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat 7 jenis arti secara umum yg diterjemahkanan dari total 3 video lagu-lagu anak dimana dalam setiap video tersebut terdiri dari beberapa video lagu-lagu anak yaitu abjad (ejaan), binatang, buah-buahan dan sayuran, bercerita tentang keluarga, berhitung (angka), lagu-lagu menjelang tidur, didalam lagu tersebut menceritakan ketauladanan anak terhadap orang tua. Selain itu, penerapan teknik-teknik tersebut cenderung berdampak baik pada kualitas terjemahan, penilaian terhadap tingkat keakuratan terjemahan lagu-lagu berbahasa inggris yang ada didalam youtube dan berbasis karakter anak usia dini menujukan hasil yang cukup akurat dan berterima dengan hasil akhir 2,60.   Kata kunci: Penerjemahan, Lagu, youtube, Bahasa Inggris
