Abstract

Disruption of technology is able to provide wider access in astronomy field. One of them through access the observation by using various remoting intruments. The easier way to use instrument particularly telescopes will facilitate data collection for both amateur and professional astronomers. In addition, the open access can increase public interest toward astronomy. Therefore, Observatorium Ilmu Falak Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (OIF UMSU) designs and develops remote telescope service based on the internet network. The system controls telescope via computer. The system consists the Astronomical Imaging System (AIS) and Human-machine Interface (HMI). The telescope designed with remote system is the Bresser Messier AR-152L (Diameter 152 mm dan focal ratio f/7,9) and Losmandy G11 Gemini mount. The system uses two computers. First computer is connected to the telescope devices and the second is used for remote control. The remoting telescope requires a stellarium, sharpcap, and teamviewer, as well as WiFi connection. The research is expected to help and give solution for researchers restricted by access and distance to observe celestial object using remoting telescope. Keywords: Telescope, Remote, OIF UMSU

Abstract

The Falak Science Observatory of the University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra (abbreviated OIF UMSU) is an observatory that is engaged in the study and research of Islamic Astronomy. Structurally, this institution is under the auspices of the University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra (UMSU). One focus of The Falak Science Observatory of the University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra is the fajr time (true dawn) research by using Sky Quality Meter (SQM) instruments. OIF UMSU's Fajr time research data has compiled up to hundred data (days), collected from 2017 to 2020. Besides, some of OIF UMSUs data also been utilized by various parties in the research and development of the dawn study and Falak science in general. This article will present at a glance about OIF UMSU and the contribution to Fajr Time research using Sky Quality Meter.

Abstract

Hilal observation has already undergone a very significant development of techniques. From daytime observations, up to the uses of various instruments that can support the success of observations. One of the routine activities carried out by the Falak Science Observatory of Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra is daytime hilal observation.  The hilal observation conducted by OIF UMSU uses an infrared filter instrument that can transmit light at infrared wavelengths and filter light at other wavelengths. This research tries to compare the contrast of daylight hilal images taken using filters and not using filters. The results obtained from the experiments carried out resulted in a contrast value using an infrared filter is 129% using Weber contrast analysis, and 4% using Michelson contrast analysis.

Abstract

Ulugh Bek (d. 853 H/1449 AD) was a Muslim scientist who mastered mathematics and astronomy, he also served as director of the Samarkand Observatory. One of his works in astronomy is “Zij Ulugh Bek” also known as “Zij al-Sulthany”. This zij contains data or astronomical tables of celestial bodies which include studies of hisab and calendar, the celestial bodies' area, planets, and the star's position. In its development, this work significantly influences the Islamic science idea and development in Nusantara, where the Islamic science books written by Islamic science national figures refer to and quote this zij a lot. Genealogically, Ulugh Bek’s Zij is one of the main sources of Islamic science studies development in Nusantara, while the astronomical data contained in this book is fairly accurate so it is still suitable to use at present.
