Abstract

Language becomes the medium in performing the works, especially literary work in written form, such asnovel. The writer‟s ideas in his literary work such as novel are illustrated by language, especially by the word  choices in creating the works. Sometimes, when the writer creates his ideas in his work, he/she uses thelanguage deviation to make his language become creative. Language deviation can be applied in Englishnovel that can be a medium for students in studying English. This paper tries to investigate the languagedeviations in popular novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling utilized as analternative way of teaching morphology and phonology for fourth semester students of English department inMadura University. The findings show that by using the language deviation, particularly grammaticaldeviation and phonological deviation, the students have some effects on the their mind, the effects are makingthe students‟ mind have the funny feeling when they connect the language deviation with the familiar Englishstandard language, making them have a curious feeling when they read the novel of which the arrangement ofwords are not in order, and making them pay more attention to the story.

Abstract

In the third millennium of quickly globalized world, teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia has become a considerable important thing. In this regard, the English teacher plays a key role to attain success in the process of EFL teaching-learning in the classroom. To reach it, the teacher surely needs an appropriate and effective teaching method to be implemented. The present investigation attempts to discuss concerning the roles of Silent Way Method (SWM) as the appropriate method to English teaching. The SWM was implemented in MTS Mifatahul Ulum Pagendingan, as one of private Islamic middle schools in Pamekasan Madura-East Java, for the first grade, by employing the color rods as a visual aid in EFL teaching. The results of this study suggest that SWM was utilized by the tutor in the school could create the students possessed a number of skills in producing EFL.

Abstract

Possessing language students who are skilled in creating a structured, orderly and no error-found piece of composition constitutes a hope and a wish for many EFL teachers, as they are the individuals who undergo a big problem when their students commit numerous errors in EFL writing as a result of their native language interference. This study is aimed at exploring native language influence on students’ English writings as well as investigating the salient and common grammatical errors in their writing with the purpose of checking whether or not Indonesian as the students’ L1 influence them when writing in English. To this end, a corpus of 22 English essays written by students is examined and the errors are then categorized according to the following aspects: grammatical, lexico-semantic, mechanics, and word order sorts of errors. In this study, mixed methods research designs are used: quantitative and qualitative. The results revealed that UNIRA students commit different sorts of errors which are chiefly on account of their native language (Indonesian) interference. The students highly rely on their L1 in stating their thoughts, even though the ranking processes revealed that their essays hold different sorts of errors, those in the grammar and the lexico-semantic statistically constitute the most serious and recurrent ones.Keywords: grammatical sentence; L1 interference; lexico-semantic; writing.

Abstract

Terampil melafalkan kata bahasa Inggris dengan baik merupakan suatu ketrampilan yang dianggap paling sulit untuk didapatkan bagi pelajar siswa SMP Qurrotul Uyun Pamekasan yang sering menggunakan bahasa Madura sebagai bahasa sehari-harinya. Apalagi mereka sangat jarang memiliki kesempatan untuk mempraktekkan pelafalan kata atau kalimat bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas maupun di luar kelas. Mengingat ketrampilan melafalkan kata-kata bahasa Inggris dengan benar dan akurat sangat diperlukan bagi siswa yang sedang belajar bahasa Ingris karena dapat berpengaruh terhadap keberhasilan mereka dalam membaca (reading) dan berbicara (speaking) maka tim abdimas berinisiatif menerapkan pembelajaran phonics, yaitu proses yang menghubungkan bentuk suara yang didengarkan dengan bentuk suara yang ditulis. Kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam pengabdian masyarakat ini berbentuk pelatihan dan pendampingan dengan menggunakan RABS (Rhyming, Alliteration, Blending, Segmentation) yang melibatkan siswa kelas 7 SMP Qurrotul Uyun Pamekasan sebagai sasaran utamanya. Mempresentasikan materi, menjelaskan RABS, memberikan pelatihan, melakukan pendampingan dan melakukan evaluasi merupakan tahapan-tahapan metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini. Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini berlangsung selama tiga hari yaitu dari tanggal 25, 26 sampai tanggal 27 Januari 2021 di kelas SMP Qurrotul Uyun Pamekasan. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran phonics yang diterapkan melalui tahapan rhyming, alliteration, blending dan segmentation pada siswa kelas 7 SMP Qurrotul Uyun Pamekasan yang sehari-harinya menggunakan bahasa Madura sebagai bahasa Ibu mereka tidak hanya dapat membantu menambah pengetahuan English phonology mereka tetapi juga dapat membantu meningkatkan ketrampilam mereka dalam melafalkan huruf-huruf bahasa Inggris dan kata-kata bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Abstrak Kondisi lingkungan kita sangat mengkwatirkan karena banyak orang enggan berfikir untuk peduli lingkungan, enggan berfikir akan dampak negatif dari masalah lingkungan. Jika hal ini di biarkan dan tidak ada tindakan dari generasi muda maka ini akan menjadi ancaman bagi ketahanan lingkungan manusia dan juga akan menjadi ancaman bagi masa depan bangsa ini khususnya bagi masa depan anak-anak sebagai generasi penerus bangsa yang kelak nanti diharapkan dapat memelihara dan menjaga lingkungan atau alam ini. Melalui pengabdian ini, tim dosen bahasa Inggris Universitas Madura berusaha memberikan pengetahuan kepada anak SDN Pagendingan Pamekasan kelasa rendah tentang peduli lingkungan dengan melihat  film “Avatar” dan “Wall-E” sebagai bagian dari sastra lingkungan, dengan tujuan untuk membentuk karakter anak sadar dan peduli lingkungan. Adapun hasil perubahan karakter anak akan di bahas di bab hasil dan pembahasan. Kata kunci : lingkungan, film “Avatar”, film “Wall-E”.

Abstract

The aim of this study are to know the role of a teacher in teaching English based on school based curriculum at junior high  school and to know the implementation of his role in teaching learning process. In this research the researcher take place at SMPN I Kadur Pamekasan, the approach of this research is qualitative while kind of research is descriptive, the data gotten by interview, observation and documentation. Those data is analyzed with analysis qualitative descriptive than the validity of data is checked by the persistence of observation a triangulation. The result of the research show that the English teacher implements six roles in teaching English, they are: As an informator, the English teacher gave some information to the students about the teaching process and the others information that needed by students. As an organizer, the English teacher made lesson plan, arrange the syllabus, designed the teaching process, chose and used the teaching method, and used media and learning source. As a motivator, the English teacher gave stimulation, motivation, and reinforcement to the students’ learning. As a director, the English teacher guided and directed the students’ learning activity appropriate the goal will be reached. As a facilitator, the English teacher gave facilitate to the students in teaching learning process. As an evaluator, the English teacher evaluated to the students achievement in academy aspect and their social attitude. Those roles will make the student be able to interest in English teaching learning process. The existence those roles will make English teacher easy to deliver the material will be given to the student in teaching learning process.

Abstract

Learning English as a target language (LETL) is likely learning something that is not native to undergraduates of Indonesian language. For this reason, if they learn the target language determination should be kept and motivation should be filled as well. This study is aimed at of knowing the influence of motivation in Indonesia department undergraduates’ performance when learning English as a target language in English classroom setting. The method chosen for this study is a quantitative approach in the form of survey where questionnaire instrument was used to collect essential data in this study. Data were collected through a questionnaire comprising 10 questions and can be located in the appendix. The participants of this research were 30 undergraduate students (16 females and 14 males) of Indonesia language Education Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Madura University (UNIRA)-Pamekasan. The result of the study suggests that motivation is proved can be the key incentive for performing performance in learning a target language. In addition to that, the effect of students’ motivation intrinsically and extrinsically when learning English as a target language essentially both can provide a strong influence on the students’ performance and plays a key role to learn a target language.

Abstract

Pronunciation for students is one of the important parts in learning English. The students often find a problem with pronunciation when they speak, read, or listen in English word. They still have poor pronunciation. It can be seen in the daily teaching and learning process, especially in speaking class. It is difficult for the students to pronounce English words. The problem was most of the student’s pronunciation was likely to be influenced by their first language., in this case, madurase language. This research aims to investigates two problems which become the main discussion of this research. The first is to describe students difficulties in English pronunciation and to know the solution of students difficulties in English pronunciation. This research is qualitative research by using descriptive case study. The participant of this research are students in first grade of SMP Negeri 2 Kedungdung. the data were collected by using observation and some interview between the researcher and students, and also the researcher and the teacher. The result of this research showed that the word difficult to pronunciation by students is “wanted” and “remembers”. All of the students make mispronunciation in “wanted” and 16 students make mispronunciation in “remembers” word. The factors students difficult to pronounce English word is the different between lettering and pronouncing, English in not their mother tongue, and the students did not practice English in their daily activity. The possible solution from the researcher to resolve the students difficulties in English pronunciation: the teacher can give motivation to the students about English is interesting to study, the students can listening English music and practice it, and the teacher make strategies to teach English lessons that make students interesting to study.

Abstract

Sejumlah besar penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa hasil belajar siswa sangat pengaruhi oleh bagaimana guru melakukan tugas mereka terutama di ruang kelas.Penampilan mengajar mereka sangat tergantung pada sejumlah aspek dan apakah mereka terus meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mengajar mereka atau tidak. Penelitian ini meneliti praktik pembelajaran profesional yang dilakukan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris Asing untuk pemula, khususnya mereka yang mengajar di Pesantren yang menyelenggarakan program Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab. Studi kasus digunakan dengan melibatkan empat Guru Bahasa Inggris dan Sekolah. Studiini mengungkapkan kesulitan mengajar guru, termasuk manajemen kelas yang terutama disebabkan oleh ukuran kelas dan kurangnya pengalaman dan otoritas untuk mengelola kelas; penekanan persiapan rencana pelajaran; dan memotivasi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, yang mengakibatkan stres guru. Hal ini juga mengungkapkan bahwa pesantren ini belum menetapkan program TPD untuk guru dan guru EFL pemula, hal ini dimungkinkan karena tidak mendapatkan dukungan yang diperlukan dari sekolah dan guru senior meskipun ada pengawasan informal dari guru senior. Umpan balik dari para guru senior dan partisipasi dalam pelatihan yang diselenggarakan oleh kementerian agama yang menghadiri pertemuan asosiasi guru bahasa Inggris biasa digunakan untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme mereka.Akhirnya, hambatan pembelajaran profesional guru EFL diasosiasikan dengan sikap mereka terhadap kebutuhan pembelajaran berkelanjutan dan program terbatas untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru.Kata kunci: Guru pemula, EFL, Pembelajaran Profesional, Pesantren

Abstract

The community service activity is aimed at providing a great command of Duolingo application for English teacher and MA Miftahul Ulum Pagendingan students where the application can be utilized as an interesting English teaching and learning tool. The method employed in this activity is training and mentoring regarding the utilization of Duolingo application through Smartphone. The activity of the service is desperately provide pedagogical commands for all participants how to teach or learn English in an interesting way that is by using Duolingo application. The participants consider that educational Duolingo application is extremely beneficial when to be utilized in English teaching and learning process in classroom.
