Abstract

Muhammad Abduh had a remarkably profound and lasting impact in Indonesia. His reformist ideas had a strong repercussion in the political and social landscape of the region. They were readily adopted by major Islamic movements, notably Muhammadiyah, al-Irshad and Persatuan Islam (Persis). Abduh’s Tafsir al-Manar deeply influenced some momentous works of Qur’anic exegesis, such as Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Madjid (Tafsir al-Nur), Tafsir al-Misbah and Tafsir al-Furqan. His Majallat al-Manar, which was planned and collaborated with Rashid Rida since 1898, highly inspired reform-oriented scholarship evident in journals such as al-Munir, and al-Dhakhirah al-Islamiyah. This study aims to analyze the influence of Abduh’s modernism in Indonesia. It attempts to discover the implication of his principle and philosophical tradition in the religious reform and modern movement in Indonesia. The method of study is based on qualitative approaches, using content analysis method. It was conducted based on library method to investigate the related data from primary and secondary sources. The data was analyzed using descriptive-analytical approaches, by way of inference (istisqa’) and deductive (istinbat) method. The paper concluded that Abduh had profound and extensive influence in the Archipelago, especially his impact on Islamic reform and renewal (islah and tajdid) in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper discusses the fundamental ideal and philosophy of education advocated by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi (1921-1986) in realizing the Islamization of knowledge (IOK) project. The concept and perspective of education projected by al-Faruqi was constructed on the worldview of tawhid that reflected the essence and intrinsic philosophy and paradigm of knowledge rooted on Islamic vision of reality and truth. It embodied the comprehensive and holistic vision of education that seeks to integrate the fundamental element of revealed and acquired knowledge. The project envisaged to undertake significant reform in the practice and method of education of the ummah that need to be recast and reproject based on the intrinsic value and paradigm of the Qur’an and its approach to knowledge. This paper will analyse this significant idea and principle and its importance in realizing the IOK vision and reforming the educational system in the Muslim world.

Abstract

Artikel ini meninjau tentang diskursus moral-historis al-Qur’an dan hadith dan pengaruhnya dalam sejarah intelektual Islam. Ini dilihat dalam terang sosio-politik dan kesan sejarahnya yang membentuk dinamika dari ajaran-ajaran moral dan spiritualnya yang pada gilirannya telah memaknai pemandangannya tentang nilai-nilai moraliti dan aspek sosio-historis Islam, dan sumbangannya terhadap perkembangan sejarah peradaban, pembentukan hukum, dan manifestasi akliahnya yang terumus dalam tradisi akliahnya seperti kitab tafsir Risalah al-Nur oleh Said Nursi. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif dengan menerapkan metode kajian historis bersifat dokumentasi dan analisis kandungan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan keutamaan fungsi al-Qur’an dan hadith dalam membentuk pemahaman sejarah yang mendasar tentang akhlak dan nilai moral dan pengaruhnya dalam memperkuat keyakinan tauhid dan psikologi keagamaan umat. Dalam konteks penafsiran dan signifikasi sejarahnya, diskursus ini dibawakan dalam kitab Risalah al-Nur karangan Said Nursi yang mendiskusikan pandangan hidup al-Qur’an dan hadith dan kesannya dalam mencorakkan pemahaman wahyu dan sejarahnya dalam konteks pemikiran falsafah dan hukum-hakam sains.
