Abstract

The English skills for the nursing students in Indonesian Higher Education need to be prepared to be able to increase the English communication skills and to avoid miscommunication and malpractice. English in Indonesia is regarded as Foreign Language, so it is not surprising if many nurses still have low English skills. Managing “English for Nursing” (EfN) course in higher education should be constructed with effective approaches one of which is constructivism. Constructivism in EfN is better conducted with some techniques including the use of technology, flash cards /situation cards, real medical tools, and forms. Hence, the students will understand the contextual situation and can construct the appropriate expressions. The implementation of the constructivist uses in EfN classes must be adjusted with the students’ level to achieve the purpose.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of grammatical errors on Instagram captions written by K-Popers. The existence of social media has become a common communication among K-Popers national and international boundaries. Instagram is one of the social media platforms which has received a lot of attention from K-Popers. K-Popers usually upload their idols’ photos or videos on Instagram, and they usually use English as their caption to make it is easy to understand by K-Popers around the world. Through the English captions on Instagram, grammatical errors often occur in their English. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher chose the accounts from hashtag #kpopshoutout. The researcher had figured out the data which were posted on January to April 2021 from six K-Popers which have been chosen in the form of sentences on Instagram captions. Five K-Popers in different accounts which have been chosen by the researcher, they were: @jsoo.yaaa_, @do.exokyung, @bts.bighotofficial, @bts.bighitotfical, and @nutshell.skz.The researcher analyzed 50 captions from six K-Popers accounts. Based on the analysis result by using Dulay’s theory, there are four types of grammatical errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy, they are omission, addition, mis-formation, and mis-ordering. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that omission was the most type of grammatical error and addition was the least type of grammatical errors that the researcher found in this research.

Abstract

In the twentieth century, when the study of cultural anthropology suggested that linguistic barriers were insuperable and that language was entirely the product of culture, the translation must be as literal as possible. This resulted in confusion among translators when translating a text, not until they were illuminated by Peter Newmark’s "Approaches to Translation". Newmark's idea has been widely used in translator training courses and combines a wealth of practical examples of linguistic theories of meaning with practical applications for translation. However, in this twenty-first century where translation becomes more complex (e.g. political agenda), Newmark’s theory seems to have a deficiency as it does not pay attention to the role of the translators. Therefore, the translation theory needs to be broadened to take into account the value-driven of the human yardstick framework. The present paper aims to provide a critical evaluation of Newmark's theory of translation and to suggest a new theory. It is concluded that Newmark's theory lacks some important criteria to really reach appropriate translation in some cases. Finally, the “Appropriateness Theory” proposed by Woesler (2021, 2) comes to perfect the previous theories and to meet the demands of this twenty-first century translation.
