Abstract

Competition in the world of tertiary education is currently so rapidly. Both for public and private colleges. The government also began to apply certain standards to improve the university competence. English Literature Department at Dharma Andalas University, one of the private universities in Padang, is aware of this competition. One of the ways to get victory in inter-university competitions is to improve the service facilities that provided the students to gain satisfaction in addition for increasing other things. Research conducted on the relationship between service facilities provided by the English Literature Department and student satisfaction turned out that only a small proportion considered the existence of a relationship. This study uses a quantitative verification approach using descriptive and clear survey methods. Regression analysis is used to analyze data which referring to SPSS version 16. The result of this research is 34.48% of participants assume that reliability is the highest mean value, so it can be concluded that the aspect of reliability is the most influential aspect in the formation of the satisfaction felt by students for academic services provided by the English Literature Department at the Dharma University of Andalas Padang

Abstract

This thesis discusses strategies off the record that describes implicatures modesty in a conversation. Off record strategy is one of the five strategies. This strategy is discussed for the use of the language used in the forms of direct.The object of research is strategies off the record that describes implicatures politeness in a famous talk show in America, namely, "Oprah Winfrey Show". The data were taken using methods refer to refer techniques involved free conversation, where the author was not involved in the dialogue that occurs because the data is taken from the TV show, recording technique with the aid of a recorded tape. Furthermore, the authors use the technique CAAT by way of transcribing talk show back in the form transcription orthographic. This analysis uses methods equivalent pragmatic look at the role of external factors of language, especially the factor of interlocutors on selection strategies used off record.The results showed that the context of the situation and the violations of the maxim of conversation will influence the choice of strategies used off record. However, there are some cases when this option do not follow the rules. This is because of other factors that come into play in a conversation such as an intonation. implicatures appear generally in the form of affirmation that is used in polite. In one sentence found two or more strategy off record selected speakers.Keyword: off record strategy, implicature, implicatures, politeness

Abstract

This research investigates English lecturers’ attitude toward the variation of English in the process of English learning. The purpose of this study is to discuss the types of English variations uttered by English lecturers who are considered as respondents in this study and their attitudes toward the variations of language that appear to their own speech during the teaching-learning process. This research is descriptive by using qualitative approach. The data to be presented in this research is taken from several words of Indonesian lecturers at several universities in Padang West Sumatra by distributing some questionnaires and also interviews. The method of data analysis is divided into two types, first, methods which related to the correlation of external language objects with a non-linguistic element called correlation method or method of matching, and secondly, methods which related to surgical, processing or internal verbal tampering called the method of operation or distribution method.

Abstract

Research on language competence of university students is critical since many people consider them have problem in well manner, especially in communication. Communication is not only passing information from speaker to hearer through language but also involve critical thinking and cognitive aspect of language. Macrostructure is competence which reflects speakers ability in using cognitive aspect to processing language. While microstructure is processed in left hemispher, macrostructure depends on process in right hemisphere. It is because macrostructure need holistic processing which connect partial informations and figure out the relation between the informations. Research toward students of Universitas Dharma Andalas shows that many students have problem in processing macrostructure aspect of language. About 81% participants have problem in summarizing, 75% participants have problem in memorizing adjective, 70% participants have problem in immidiate memory processing, 75% particiants have difficulty in figuring implicit relation, and 70% participants have difficult in using cohesion.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of code-mixing and the form of code-mixing of 8 song lyrics of Saykoji in the 2006 album. This study uses the code-mixing theory of Nababan, (1984). This research includes a qualitative description. This study used the Independent See-Engage-talk Technique (TSBLC) and Technique Direct Element (BUL) to analyze the data. This study focuses on the type of code-mixing using theory Suwito's (1983), and the form of code-mixing using theory Suwito's (1995). After conducting the analysis, there were sixty-six (66) data found in the code-mixing type and fifty-seven (57) data in the code-mixing form. According to Suwito, there are two types of code-mixing, namely Inner and Outer. After being analyzed, it was found that the Inner code-mixing in eight (8) Saykoji song lyrics was 15 (22.72%) while the outer code-mixing was found to be 51 (72.27%). The form of code mixing according to Suwito consists of six namely word, phrase, baster, repetition, idiom, and clause. After being analyzed, the highest percentage is word 32(56,14%), The second position is phrase 7(12, 2%), Idiom 6 (10, 52%), Clause 5(8,77%), repetition 4 (7 %), baster 3 (5.26%).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of Directive Speech Acts used by the main characters in the movie of Jurassic World Dominion (2022). This study applies the theory of Searle (1976) to the types of Directive Speech Acts. The subject of this study is the conversation of the main characters in the movie. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach and Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) technique to gather and analyze the data. The results of this study reveal two things,first, Question ranks the highest score with 46 utterances (57,5%), because the genre of the movie is action automatically every conversation will be followed by action from the listener. Meanwhile, Permission 2 utterances (3.7%) rank the lowest score, because the movie is about an adventure and there are not too many formal words found. Finally, Permission is the least commonly used because most of the dialogue in this movie is about adventure, and the relationships between the players are closely intertwined without any age restrictions.
