Abstract

Many researchers have claimed the success of the application of problem-based learning in many fields of study. This learning model is in line with the constructivist principles, in which students are in the centre of the learning process. Moreover, problem-based learning model provides the opportunity for students not only to develop their hard skills, but also soft skills. In addition, it also strives to help students become independent and self-regulated learners. This is one of the main advantages of applying the learning model. This article attempts to provide a short review of problem-based learning model in teaching writing. Furthermore, the discussion will also focus on the issue by looking at some explanation found in accounting for the needs of the learning model in the 21st century-language learning

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine students’ summarizing strategies in writing summaries from multiple texts. The participants were taught summary writing using concept mapping strategies. The summarizing strategies of the students were collected through think aloud protocol and questionnaire. This study suggests that explicit instruction in the use of concept mapping strategies during summarizing was crucial to improve the quality of their summaries. This study indicates some differences in the strategies employed by the students of the two different groups. Information about successful strategies employed by high ability students in writing a summary can be used to teach low ability students.

Abstract

The energy that drives the spirit of learning is the motivation to learn. This motivation is fluctuating, sometimes strong and sometimes weak. Under normal circumstances, before the pandemic period, students came to class on time to take lessons. They can ask the teacher directly. Also, lecturers can see student responses directly, either implicitly or explicitly. Implicit responses can be seen from student gestures during the learning process in class. The problem that occurs is the arrival of a pandemic that causes all elements in the education system to suddenly have to adjust to new things. This change has an impact on changes in student learning motivation. The problem faced is the change in learning to the online system causes changes in students' learning motivation. These changes were studied using the descriptive inquiry method. The method of data collection was done by observing and describing "thinking aloud" student experiences in writing during distance learning. Some students managed to adapt to the pandemic situation and conditions and some students reacted less positively. The cause of the decline in learning motivation experienced by the study population was a sudden change due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The writers conducted five steps of the R&D method: 1) Preliminary investigation; 2) Designing; 3) Realization/construction; 4) Testing, revising, and evaluation; 5) Implementation [6]. The writers implemented these steps by designing the product. The data were collected from documentation, observation and interview in the preliminary investigation step. In the designing step, the writers arranged the structure and content of the script and made it become the first draft as a realization step. In the testing, revising and evaluating step, the draft of the video script regarding the language, structure of sentences, and the content of the script was revised by several experts starting from tourism, linguistics, and script writing experts. In the last step, the writers made it become the final script. The script was written in English by using Celtx as the software for writing the script. The script described the uniqueness and the long history of three Chinese temples in Palembang. In addition, to design a script, the R&D method [6] was linked to the ten steps of writing a script: finding an idea, creating a plan, researching, selecting material, planning the message, arranging the structure, drafting the script, first draft and testing script, and final draft [7].

Abstract

The aim of this research is to ascertain the impact of the RAP reading strategy on the academic progress of pupils in vocabulary and reading comprehension. The sample for this study comprised 45 pupils (22 females and 23 males) from Sriwijaya State Polytechnic who were in their second semester during the 2022-2023 academic year. This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental approach. The study employed a vocabulary test, a reading comprehension test, and the RAP reading strategy. The data analysis used mean, standard deviation, standard error mean, and t-tests for both the vocabulary test and the reading comprehension achievement test. The statistical significance level was set at .05. The study demonstrated that there were significant differences in reading comprehension achievement and vocabulary mastery between the experimental group and the control group. However, the RAP reading strategy was found to be more effective in enhancing reading comprehension achievement and vocabulary mastery than the traditional reading strategy. Overall, the RAP reading strategy can be a valuable tool for improving students' vocabulary and reading comprehension.
