Abstract

‘Desakota’ has been acknowledged as a unique landscape condition in South East Asia and Indonesia especially. In the middle of emerging economies and rapid urban development, ‘desakota’ as a peri-urban area suffers environmental degradation in the economy and socio-culture because of poor planning and control from state and local authority. Inequality, spatial segregation, and inadequate infrastructure or slums are issues that peri-urban’desakota’ has to encounter. Nevertheless, as a tool for producing and adapting the built environment and introducing a spatial order, urban design shows less concern for developing this distinct peri-urban area. This study conducted in Teluknaga, Tangerang, the neighboring Jakarta, examined the significance of informality which shapes a compact urban form in the 'desakota' area. Data collection of the study was done through field study by conducting interviews, observations, and direct mapping. We conclude that the informality potents should be considered for designing ‘desakota’ to maintain its compact form and create a more sustainable urban form and a better urban life.

Abstract

In the development of civilization, humans have become the core in urban spaces. Therefore, human encounters in urban space becomes inevitable. Simultaneously, inclusiveness has been and is still a parameter for the accomplishment of a good public spaces. This study aims to understand the spatial pattern of human encounters in urban spaces. Tebuireng’s Pesantren area and Gus Dur Tomb were then chosen as a case study due to their intense use by more than 1 million people which are divided into 3 main actors, namely santri, pilgrims and local residents. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach, by conducting literature studies, field observations, interviews, documentation, mapping and drawing. The author finds collision or convergence phenomenon in the mixing of actors in the observed area. There are two major types of convergence that occur in the 6 major collision zones, namely single directional convergence and multi directional convergence. The convergence mechanism of each zone is then analyzed according to its type. The study found that convergence phenomenon produces swelling space as an area that holds mass overflow after the collision occurs.

Abstract

Despite the highly praised for technology achievements and prosperities, the morphology and appearance of Cities in Japan are often criticized as dull, uninteresting, brutal, and chaos. The question is, how do cities in Japan gain stability while the reality of the urban condition is in a chaos? Is there something behind the chaos that makes urban dwellers of Japanese cities able to relatively live comfortably and safely? This paper analyses some aspects which shaped Japan urbanism, from disorderly addressing system to the speed of building transformations that considerably high. Findings on the hidden orders behind the chaos of Japanese cities reveal an understanding that the spatial and physical chaos of a dense city are not always identified as a social chaos.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the background of rapid urban development in Tebuireng, an area hosting one of the oldest and most well-known pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Indonesia. Within less than a decade, Tebuireng has run into significant development to accommodate massive number of people visiting the area. We conduct numerous field observation, mappings and in-depth interview with related actors in the area. Content analysis method is carried out to figure out the objective of this research. The study found that faith, known as ‘Ngalap Barokah’ is the main basis for the process of city formation and determines how the urban actors utilize the urban space. Considering the huge numbers of Islam believers in Indonesia, it is important to understand the aspects of faith that affect the urban growth, especially in the cities dominated by Moslem population. Finally, the finding of this faith based morphological research is potentially contributed for the practice of Indonesian urban planning, especially for anticipating the city growth dominated by Moslem stake holders.

Abstract

Temporary space is part of public space, which could be powerful enough to give the city its character and uniqueness. This study aims to investigate how “sense” and activities of temporary space created at Jalan Menpor Palsigunung, Depok, potent to distinguish the street's character. Analyses were done based on Kevin Lynch's theory in his book the Good City Form (1981). This qualitative study was conducted using empirical data through observation of the physical form and activities along both sidewalks of the street. This study's findings conclude that semi-permanent retailing features can create opportunities for placemaking. It is derived from how these features give meaning to places through repetitive and colourful physical forms and face-to-face trading activities that attract many people to participate.

Abstract

Ideally, children interact in spaces that have been provided with physical conditions that are comfortable and safe for children. However, children can have the will to determine the interaction spaces they like. So it is necessary to find out how the children's neighborhood forms an interaction space and where their preferred position is. This study uses a qualitative method with a grounded theory approach located in one of the settlements in Kabupaten Bogor, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. The results of the study show that children in determining interaction spaces are motivated by everyday life which includes responsibilities, preferred activities, and gathering activities; as well as freedom which includes freedom to consume time and freedom to consume space. Preferred positions in interaction spaces are around the bandminton court and along the edge of the park. This research is useful for architects so they can design each side of the space as a possibility to become an interaction space that is in accordance with the thoughts and desires of children. This study is also useful to be able to increase the level of the children's neighborhood.
