This paper presents study result on the log peeling properties and the glueing, physical and mechanical properties of the veneer and plywood made from nine wood species are described in this paper. The result shows that all of the, logs could be peeled in cold condition. The average veneer shrinkage from green to oven dry moisture content was 7.00 % and veneer swelling from oven dry to air dry condition the average value was 3.39 %. The average thickness reduction due to pressing in plywood manufacturing was 3. 78 mm. The bonging strength of plywood from 8 wood species (89 %) conforms with the Indonesian standard for type II, 9 wood species (100 %) with Japanese standard and 9 wood species (100 %) with German standard. The average specific gravity of multiplex was 0.61 while the average specific gravity of trplex was 0.60. Bending strength. tensile strength and compression strength parallel to grain of triplex are higher than multiplex.

Hasil pemanenan kayu di areal hutan baik hutan alam maupun hutan tanaman masih menyisakan potongan-potongan kayu kecil. Potongan kayu yang biasa disebut sebagai limbah pemanenan pada umumnya ditinggalkan di hutan dan sebagian yang dianggap masih laik dijual kepada penduduk sekitar hutan untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai kayu bakar atau bahan baku energi lainnyaDalam rangka meningkatkan pemanfaatan limbah kayu dari hasil pemanenan hutan tanaman, telah dilakukan penelitian pengolahan limbah kayu jenis mangium (Accacia mangium) di areal hutan tanaman di BKPH Parungpanjang, Bogor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor konversi rarta- rata limbah pemanenan untuk bahan baku serpih (chip) adalah 1 sm = 0,4791 m3 = 0,257 ton. Rendemen serpih sebelum disaring dan setelah disaring masing-masing adalah 97% dan 53%. Produktivitas penyerpihan adalah 1,6 ton/hari. Investasi pendirian satu unit pengolahan serpih kayu sebesar Rp 38.000.000. Biaya produksi per tahun sebesar Rp 156.109.113 dan harga pokok produksi serpih sebesar Rp 325.227 per ton serpih. Dengan harga jual serpih Rp 360.000 per ton, dapat diperoleh laba kotor dan laba bersih rata-rata per tahun masing-masing sebesar Rp 16.691.040 dan Rp 14.187.784.

Blockboards of six wood species of logging waste from Lampung as core strip material were manufactured in the laboratory, and their physical and mechanical properties were tested.The average value of moisture content, board density and strip density were 10.09%, 0.63 g/cm3 and 0.49 g/cm3, respectively. Bending strength parallel to the grain varied between 690.47 kg/cm2 (red meranti) and 1041.99 kg/cm2 (keruing). The bending strength perpendicular to the grain varied between 112.40 kglcm2 (Bima) and 319.90 kg/cm2 (Pulai), and bending strength parallel to the grain were significantly affected by wood species, but bending strength perpendicular to the grain were not.

The characteristics studied are peeling properties, physical properties of the veneer, gluing properties and some physical and mechanical properties of the plywood (both triplex and multiplex).All logs from the 7 wood species could be peeled satisfactorily in cold condition. Veneer of 0.9 mm and 1.5 mm thickness could be produced at a cutting angle between 91°-93°.Average shrinkage of the veneer is 7%. Average swelling from oven dry condition is 3%.Water resistant, bonding strength for all wood species studied meet Indonesian, Japanese and German standards. Average thickness reduction due to pressing in the plywood manufacturing process is 0.15 mm.Specific gravity of the plywood is about 6 percent higher than that of the wood from which it is made of

A study result on the suitability of wood species from Irian Jaya as raw material for veneer and plywood is reported in this paper. This study consisted log peeling characteristic, veneer property, some physical and mechanical properties of plywood (triplex and multiplex).All of the logs from 6 wood species could be peeled in cold condition, producing 1.5 mm veneer at a cutting angle between 920-92°30-The average shrinkage of veneer is 7.99%, with a minimum of 6. 74% (sehiega) and maximum of 9. 71 % (petuon). Veneer swelling from oven-dry to air-dry condition varied between 2. 68% (katulampa) and 4.01 % (petuon) with an average of 3.19%.The bonding strength of plywood for type 11 from 6 wood species (100%) conform's with the Indonesian Standard6 wood species (100%) with Japanese Standard and 6 species (100%) with German Standard.The specific gravity of multiplex is higher than triplex. Five Indonesian wood species were investigated for their veneer and plywood properties. These species include are meranti merah (Shorea stenoptera Burck.), akasia (Acacia magnium Willd.), ampupu T (Eucalyptus urophylla), ampupu A (Eucalyptus urophylla) and ekaliptus (Eucalvptus platiphvlla F.v.M). . Four wood species were peeled in cold condition. Only ekaliptus was found unsuitable for peelling due to high density and the interwoven nature of the fibers. Veneer of 1.5 mm thickness could be produced satistactorily at a cutting angle between 90o92°. Average shrinkage of the veneer is 8.28%. Average swelling from oven dry condition to completely saturabed is 3.76%. Water resistance bonding strength for all wood species studied was m conformity with the Indonesian, Japanese, and German standards. Average thickness reduction due to pressing pressure during plywood making is 0,24 mm. .Average specific gravity of the plywood appeared to 0.048 be percent higher than that of the wood from which they are made of.

Experimental plywood panels were made from bolts of tapped and untapped Pinus merkusii trees obtained from East Java. The bolts were rotary peeled into veneers of 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm thick. Veneer of 1.5 mm was exclusively used as face veneer and others for core. Plywood panels were glued with urea formaldehyde resin. Plywood were made with 5 thickness variation (5.00 mm, 6.00 mm, 7.5 mm, 9.0 mm and 12.00 mm). The physical and mechanical properties of all panels were tested according to the ASTM standard, and bonding strength of plywood was tested according to Indonesian, Japanese (JAS) and Germany (DIN) standards. The results indicated that there is no significant difference in moisture content, density of plywood made tapped and untapped pine wood. Mechanical properties of plywood (bending strength, tensile strength and compression strength) were significant difference made of tapped and untapped pine wood also vice versa with its thickness variation.Bonding of glue of plywood there is no significant difference made tapped and untapped pine wood. Only plywood which tested its bonding strength using Germany standard indicated significant shear strength of plywood with thick ness 5.00 mm is better than that of the 6.00 mm thickness.Modulus of rupture and compression strength of tapped pine plywood are better than the untapped one.

Papan blok (5 lapis) sekala laboratorium dibuat dari kayu sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) dan kayu tusan (Pinus merkusii) yang direkat dengan perekat urea formaldehida. Venir luar dan bilah inti papan blok terbuat dari kayu sengon sedangkan venir silang terbuat dari kayu tusam. Tebal venir luar 2 mm sedangkan tebal venir silang 3 mm. Ukuran bilah inti terdiri dari dua dan 3 macam lebar ( 0,7, 2,5 dan 7,6 cm). Sifat papan blok diuji menurut Standar Indonesia (SNI) meliputi kadar air, kerapatan, keteguhan rekat dan delaminasi. Pengujian keteguhan lentur papan blok dilakukan menurut Standar Jerman (DIN) sedangkan pengujian pengembangan dimensi papan blok dilakukan menurut Standar Amerika (ASTM). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh ukuran bilah inti terhadap sifat papan blok sengon dengan venir silang kayu tusam.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar air rata-rata papan blok adalah 12% sedangkan kerapatan rata-rata papan blok adalah 0,42 g/cm3. Lebar bilah inti berpengaruh terhadap pengembangan tebal dan pengembangan lebar papan blok. Tebal bilah inti berpengaruh terhadap pengembangan lebar papan blok tetapi tidak berpengaruh terhadap pengembangan tebal dan pengembangan panjang papan blok. Keteguhan rekat papan blok yang diuji berdasarkan uji geser tarik dan uji delaminasi memenuhi persyaratan Standar Indonesia (SNI). Penggunaan venir silang kayu tusam dalam pembuatan papan blok sengon meningkatkan keteguhan lentur sebesar 6,2% pada arah sejajar serat dan 18,6% pada arah tegak lurus serat. Keteguhan lentur sejajar serat papan blok sengon yang dibuat dengan menggunakan venir silang kayu tusam semuanya memenuhi persyaratan Standar Jerman (DIN).

The result of the suitability study of two wood species as raw material for veneer and plywood are reported. The wood raw material used rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria). The wood used were obtained from different age classes i.e.10 and 20 years for rubber wood and 10 and 15 years for sengon. The study consisted of log peeling characteristic, veneer properties and some physical-mechanical properties of plywood (triplex and multiplex).All of the logs from two wood species could be peeled in cold condition, producing 1,5 mm veneer at a cutting angle between 89o30'-91o30'. The average shrinkage of veneer is 4.51% and the average veneer swelling from oven-dry to air dry is 3.30 %.The bonding strength of plywood from all wood species conform with the Indonesian standard, German standard and Japanese standard for type 11 or water resistant. The spesific gravity and mechanical properties of plywood from the older tree tends higher than that from the younger tree.
