Abstract

This study looks at the contemporary phenomena of the birth of two religions within Islam and Christianity, namely Ahmadiyyah and Mormonism. Through the frame of world religion classification, this study emphasizes what makes these sects become and classified by many scholars as ‘New Religions’ while other sects are not. This study re-looks at how hybrid religions have been crafted, developed and classified based on the age of the religion and where those religions first appeared, this study also looks at the historical process of how these hybrid religions became new religions. By considering the historical process, understanding prophecy, religious teaching, believe and particular interpretation over the main religions, this study aims to understand the emergent process of ‘new religions’ as temporary shelters for illegitimate sects. By comparing two sects, I conclude that these new religions have some common grounds which can be seen through interpreting the meaning of ‘prophet’ and ‘prophecy’, religious entities that make these sects excluded from the big umbrellas they are under Islam and Christianity. Keywords:Religion, Sect, Prophet, Prophecy

Abstract

This research explains the multiple barriers of women in rural villages in Southern Rembang, Indonesia. Beside economics and culture, they also face religious barriers in which religious learning and literacy are privileged to only certain people. Kajar is a village where Human Development Index is below the national level and women have dual roles as both domestic workers and family caretakers. Unfortunately, the poverty and lack of purpose in women’s education have limited women’s choices and voices.Through research-based on participation in making women agents of social-religious change, this research finds that women are robust agents for developing literacy based on langgar for their consistency and ability to influence their family, neighborhood, and society. The agencies of women are also going through making the langgar as ‘unofficial madrasa’ where children, both male, and female, are learning religious knowledge equally. Although the impact is not that instant, the agencies have slowly improved religious knowledge and perception of female religious education.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper explains about hijrah, a popular term among urban youths; it refers not only religious, but also political transformation. This activity has been  growing massively in the urban area through the internet and in the short after the fall of Soeharto regime where democracy and the technology has become more developed. Digitally, hijrah shapes the narration of being pious, religious and modern-fashionable look. Taking the data from field observation on the hijrah event and following the digital media, this paper attempts to investigate the historical root of hijrah and how the youth utilize modern technology to visualize and share their narration on being politically pious. Borrowing the idea from Birgit Meyer and Bayat about visualization and post-Islamism, this paper has found that although hijrah narration is close to fundamental religious activism and politically promotes Islamic political system, but the agenda has not succeeded. However, hijrah activity is successful in engaging youth through the events such as; sharing session, gathering, book review, festival and preaching which are specifically designed for youths. Abstrak: Tulisan ini menjelaskan tentang hijrah. Abstract

Modern Indonesian had featured by two overlapping terms ‘Defending Religion’ and ‘Defending Islam’. Both are similar and popular term during the light of Islamic resurgence in the post-reformation era. As the term emerged publicly, religious discourse and debate concerning on the term are inevitable. The term, problematically, used by the particular group to legitimate numerous political actions, escalated the number of religious blasphemy. Surely, Muslims are obligated to defend Islam, but Islamic teaching also encourages the Muslim to respect communal-pluralistic society. By employing a thematic approach, this paper then argues that the idea of ‘defending religion’ should be revisited. Based on the occasion of revelation, the collected verses initially considered as an appeal to do “justice” (ʽadl), fight against the repressive community, persecution, displacement, and any outraged acts. Through tracing the occasion of revelation, this paper also argued that the idea of “defending religion” has also much to do with the idea of “defending diversity” in the context of pluralistic society.

Abstract

This study aims to see and analyze the cosmological relation between time and spiritual life in the Javanese-Islamic tradition. Philosophically, the system of pranotomongso(cycle of time) believes to have a solid connection to the knowledge of time and the spiritual dimension of life surrounding it. Based on a study of Javanese literature (primbon)and Islamic views on the cosmology of time, this study shows that in Javanese culture and literature, time is not only seen as a natural cycle but also positioned like living beings. Therefore, the Javanese believe in humans' importance in maintaining good relations with time. The relationship model must be symbiotic-mutualism. At the same time, the Islamic tradition sees that Allah SWT created the universe and the regularity of time for the good of humankind. So, it is clear that both Islamic and Javanese traditions place time as a symbol that indicates the unity of man and his creator. Although time strongly influences human knowledge regarding a time where humans depend entirely on natural cycles, the value of knowledge about time itself is cross-generational.

Abstract

Turath is the product of Muslim thoughts from generation to generation, and the Turath should be legitimized. The legitimacy of truth is crucial to confirm the validity of the tradition. Since its source is other than the Qur'an and hadith, Turath is still debatable. Turath criticism is part of the attitude that must be done for the legitimacy of Turath. This practice has the potential to be non-Islamic. Among the Turath practices that need to be legitimized by legal arguments is the method of reading Yasin Fadhilah at the Al-Anwar III Islamic Boarding School. This study of the legitimacy of Yasin Fadhilah's practice uses the views of Ibn 'Ashur with his maqasid shari'ah theory. Research from the maqasid shari'ah perspective will accomplish the view of making law from all sides. Yasin Fadhilah is a tradition of praying with the intermediary of a Yasin chapter carried out based on orders from a teacher from the ahlul-bait of the Prophet Muhammad. From the perspective of Maqasid Shari'ah, the practice of reading the chapter is legal in Islamic law, even though it is included in the Tahsiniyyāt category.
