Abstract

Multiplication of teak clones can be conducted by using vegetative methods either macro or in vitro. In this research, several teak clones collected from Gunungkidul and Wonogiri were propagated using bud grafting technique to know the variation of their growth ability in the nursery. This research arranged in nested design, with 25 clones nested in 3 locations of scion source (clonal test at Gunungkidul, progeny test in Gunungkidul and clonal test in Wonogiri). Each treatment was repeated in 5 replications and each replication consisted of 10 bud grafted seedlings. The result showed that there were significant variations of growth among the clones in all observation characters, whereas the location of scion source was not significant. The best survival percentage of bud grafting from 3 sites of scion source were Clone 8 from the clonal test in Gunungkidul, Clone 64 from progeny test in Gunungkidul, Clone 43 and 87 from the clonal test in Wonogiri.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of plant material origin and size of cuttings on the growth ability of Gmelina. arborea stem cuttings in the nursery. The study was arranged in a randomized factorial pattern design, consisting of two factors, namely the length of the cuttings (L1 = 20 cm and L2 = 30 cm) and the cuttings size factor (small diameter class/D1 = <1.25 cm, medium/D2 = 1.25 – 2.50 cm and large/D3 => 2.50 cm). Each treatment used 5 stem cuttings and repeated in 3 times, which are grouped based on their origin population namely Bantul/P1, Bogor/P2, Lampung/P3, Bondowoso/P4 and Lombok/P5. The observationsshowed the survival percentage was 83.12% and the rooting percentage was 78.23% which was influenced by the length and diameter of the stem cuttings. The growth of shoots (number, length and diameter) and the number of shoot nodes and leaf were affected by the interaction of origin of the population and the length and diameter of the stem cuttings. Applying stem cutting method is very potential to produce planting stock of Gmelina arbore. Stem cuttings which has a biger size showed better grow of stem cuttings.

Abstract

Teak clonal trial was established at Watusipat, Gunungkidul to obtain best clonal for fast growth in order to increase productivity of privatelly owned forest of teak (Tectona grandis). Tirdty one (31) clonal teak from Thailand and teak forest in Java Island and Muna, Sulawesi Tenggara were tested in this trial. Randomized Complete Block Design, consisting of 5 replications, and 5 tree (clone) per plot were designed in this plot. Data of the teak clonal trial were collected for growth (height and diameter at breast height) in 2 and 4 years old. In view of the variation between clones and genetic variation of growth, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and genetic parameters were conducted. The results showed that significant differences were found between clones in the trial for height and diameter in 2 or 4 years old. The average of height were 5.10 m in 2 years old and 8.88 m in 4 years old, the average of diameter were 5.86 cm in 2 years old and 9.21 cm in 4 years old. Clonal repeatabilties were low in the trial (H2C=0.07 for height and H2C=0.08 for diameter in 2 years old; H2C=0.13 for height and H2C=0.12 for diameter in 4 years old). Base on these results, it can be conclued that the breeding program of teak can improve the mean annual increment (MAI) while using clonal selection. Therefore, the main goal for increasing productivity of teak privatelly owned forest, will be achieved.

Abstract

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is one of multipurpose tree species that their  wood, bark, fruit and leaves can be utilized for human life. The main product of breadfruit is its fruit as one of the potential food sources that has a fairly high nutrient content and is widely consumed as an additional food and even traditional staple foods such as in some countries the Pacific region. The challenge in developing breadfruit as an alternative food source for the community is to prepare the plant material of superior breadfruit clones which have high fruit production and have enough nutrients and chemicals as a source of food and medicinal ingredients. Based on the clones selection at the clonal test plantation in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta obtained 5 excellent breadfruit populations representing breadfruit cultivars in Indonesia, namely Cilacap, Yogyakarta, Bali island, Bone  and Manokwari. To ensure the availability of seedlings of superior breadfruit clones, the development of planting stocks production techniques is carried out by root cuttings, shoot cuttings and stem cuttings in the nursery that showed better growth succeess (70-100%). Furthermore, information dissemination is carried out to increase efforts to develop breadfruit by the community / user. Breadfruit planting activities are carried out to increase the availability of food reserve forests in the future, both independently and collaboratively with stakeholders  who interested in  developing of breadfruit plantations.

Abstract

Gmelina arborea is one plant spacies that is widely planted in smallholder forests in Bondowoso, East Java. This research was conducted in the framework of the selection of seed sources that can be developed for proiduksi quality seeds. The results showed that a relatively equitable distribution of forest people in four districts with three patterns that monoculture, mixtures and intercropping with agricultural crops. Parent tree bole height average of 10.60 m with a trunk diameter/ 25.39 cm dbh. there are 2 types of fruit is round and slightly oval with the number of seeds per kilogram of grain in 1872 and 1000 grain weight of seed on average 538.75 grams indicates the variation differed significantly between the parent tree.Key Words: Gmelina arborea; seed trees; selection; smallholder forest
