Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the types of speech function used by the main character in Wonder movie and to describe the application of speech function found for teaching speaking. The study is designed as descriptive qualitative. The instrument of the study was the researcher. In collecting data, the researcher used audio-visual material and document analysis. The researcher used inductive type to analyze the data. The result shows that there are 289 utterances used by the main character in Wonder movie classified into six types of speech function. Those are 64 (22%) expressive, 24 (8%) directive, 167 (58%) referential, 7 (3%) metalinguistic, 9 (3%) poetic, and 18 (6%) phatic. Based on the result, the kinds of speech function used by main character in Wonder movie can be applied in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade of senior high school.

Abstract

This research deals with Illocutionary Acts Found in Before I Fall movie and Its Application in teaching speaking to eleventh grade students of senior high school. The aims of this research are (1) to find out the types of illocutionary act made by the main character of Before I Fall movie. (2) to describe the application of illocutionary acts found in Before I Fall movie in teaching speaking to eleventh grade students of senior high school. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The data are form Illocutionary acts found in made by main character in Before I Fall movie. It was collected by finding the movie, watching the movie, downloading the script, reading the script, then collecting illocutionary acts utterances of the main character in the movie. After the data collected, the researcher analyzed the data based on the types. The result shows that there are 5 types of illocutionary act found in made by main character in Before I Fall movie. Those are 97 utterances of assertives (32.11%), 112 utterances of directives (37.08%), 5 utterances of commisives (1.65%), 75 utterances of expressives (24.83%), and 11 utterances of declaratives (3.64%). The application of illocutionary acts found in the main character of Before I Fall movie using movie as the method to improve speaking skills of Senior High School learners, so that students will be more interested in learning English.

Abstract

This basic problem comes to the students’ low vocabulary mastery, teacher’s low creativity in teaching, infectivity of general dictionary to teach vocabulary, teacher’s low creativity in teaching, infectivity of vocabulary teaching and learning methods currently applied, students tend to get bored in learning vocabulary because of the use of monotonous methods. This fundamental problem then lead the researchers to do research which goal is to find out in which using visual dictionary more effective in teaching vocabulary for junior high school. By applying quantitative research, the researchers did research in SMPN 36 Purworejo. Employing Class 8 A taught using visual dictionaryand Class 8 C taught using general dictionary, the researchers then give 20 questions of multiple choice test to evaluate the result of teaching vocabulary. The result of this research shows that the mean score of 8 A is 81.96 and the mean of 8 C is 74.24. Then, from the computation of inferential analysis, it shows that the result of Zvalue(6.98) is lower than Ztable (1.96).From the result, it can be concluded that use of Visual Dictionary in teaching vocabulary skill at the eighth grade is effective.

Abstract

Di era abad 21 ini, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris semakin berkembang. Sekarang peran guru bukan satu- satunya namun ada guru sangat diperlukan untuk memanfaatkan sumber-sumber pembelajaran lain yang dapat memberikan pengalaman belajar kepada siswa. Dengan memaksimalkan peran guru dalam mengkombinasikan sumber-sumber belajar khususnya materi internet diharapkan siswa dapat menguasai 21st century skills yang meliputi critical thinking, collaboration, communication dan creative problem solving. Berangkat dari tujuan untuk meningkatkan skil siswa MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMK Kabupaten Wonosobo bekerja sama dengan tim pengabdian Purworejo mengadakan Workshop Metode Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMK di Wonosobo. Kegiatan yang melibatkan 45 peserta yang meliputi guru bahasa Inggris dari SMK Negeri dan Swasta. Hasil dari kegiatan ini peserta workshop mendapatkan teknik-teknik dan metode dalam pengelolaan kelas yang meliputi penggunaan metode problem-based learning (PBL), Task-based learning, Inquiry-base learning dan Blended learning, dan sharing based practice pembeljaran speaking dengan game.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide information about English learning assistance in the era pandemic Covid-19 for students in Mendiro through the community service. This activity was done to respond the community’s need to minimize the problems of learning English which were appeared during Covid-19 pandemic. The participants of the activity were 25 students which consisted of primary schools, Junior High School and Senior High School. The main problem of the students were difficulties in understanding English lessons as they were lack of interaction with their teachers since they were study from home (BDR). They have limited strategies to do self study at home. To overcome the problems, a team of lecturers of English Language Education conducted a community service in Mendiro village, Ngombol subdistric of Purworejo. Through sharing of knowledge and strategies to learn English skills through internet media, the participants could get knowledge and took opportunity to practice their English. By adopting the strategies given by team of lecturers, the participants are expected to be able to learn English easier with more enjoyable and enjoy simple literary works such as short films, short stories, short stories videos and songs. Finally, they can obtain better English skills in the future

Abstract

This paper aims to develop English language skills, especially due to tourism. Based on the theme, the team of Lecturers in English Language Education, Purworejo Muhammadiyah University presents material on learning English, especially in the field of tourism in the village of Tlogobulu, Kaligesing, Purworejo, especially the community of Tlogobulu Village, Kaligesing, Purworejo, especially the community. In Purworejo regency, there are several tourism locations that have the potential to be developed to the national, even international level. In addition, to drive the economic potential of the tourism sector from upstream to downstream, it is very important to empower the tourism potential in the village area. Therefore, the english education lecturer's community service team in collaboration with the village head of Tlogobulu, Kaligesing subdistrict, Purworejo, organized an activity with the theme ‘’English for Tourism for the Tourism Village Pioneer”. Thus the participants gained new experiences, especially about Tourism English skills. The material they obtained from the English Lecturer team is as follows; (1) "English for Special Purposes to Tourism Village", (2) "English for Negotiating in the Communication", (3) "Vocabulary for Tourism and Hospitality".

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the different sorts of communication methods used in Lady Gaga's talk show and to discuss how these strategies are used in teaching speaking. The descriptive qualitative method was used in the study. The researcher conducts research on communication strategy theory, focusing on the Dornyei et al theory (1995). The information is gathered from the participant's discussions on the talk program. The researcher performed some steps when it came to data analysis. The first step is to download a video from YouTube. The second step is to download the transcription. Third, double-checking both the video and the transcription to ensure accuracy. Identifying the many types of communication methods used in Lady Gaga's talk show is the fourth step. The findings of this study revealed that there were 23 communication methods, including 1 avoidance strategies (4%), 2 achievement or compensatory strategies (9%), 17 stalling or time gaining strategies (74%), 2 self-monitoring strategies (9%), and 1 interactional strategies (4% ). Based on the results of each strategy, it can be stated that the majority of communication strategies involve stalling or time gaining . The researcher hopes that this thesis will contribute to the advancement of communication knowledge, particularly communication strategies for teachers, students, and other researchers involved in teaching speaking.

Abstract

Abstract. As English learners in today’s world, people must master the four skills in language learning. There are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Writing is one of the most difficult aspects of language learning. Almost every student faces this issue. This problem prompts the researchers to conduct this study. This research is to analyze of prepositional phrases in Carlo’s short story Pinocchio. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The aims of this research to find out the functions of prepositional phrases found in the Carlo’s short story Pinocchio and to describe the application of prepositional phrases in the Carlo’s short story Pinocchio in teaching writing. The data source of this research is short story of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The result of the analysis shows that there are two functions of prepositional phrases found in Carlo’s short story Pinocchio. Of the 27 data found, there are 21 prepositional phrases in function as adverb (77.78%) and 6 prepositional phrases in function as adjective (22.22%). This research can be applied in teaching writing. Keywords: Prepositional Phrase, Short Story, Teaching Writing.
