Abstract

Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea L.) is usually propagated through young tillers or rhizome cuttings. A glass house and field tials were carried out at the Cimanggu Expeimental Insulation of the Research Institute for Spice and Medicinal Crops (RISMC), to assess 0k efect of rhizome patition and number of nodes of each parts on the viability of rhizomes, growth, productivity and starch content of arrowroot A clone of arrowroot (No. 17) collected from RISMC was used. One, two, three or four nodes of rhizomes cut at the base, middle or tip were used. A preliminary study was conducted in glass house from August to September 1999, where 40 samples of rhizomes were tested for their viability. Further study was conducted in the field from October 1999 to April 2000, to assess the growth, productivity and starch content of the rhizome from each treatment. The ield experiment was designed as a randomized block, arranged factorially in three replicates. The first factor was rhizome part (base, middle or tip) snd the second one was number of nodes (one, two, three or four nodes). Results showed that the highest percentage of plant growth, and seedling vigor of one month old were obtained from Uic four nodes tip rhizome cutting. At 6.5 month after planting the highest significant yield of resh rhizome was obtained from both base and middle parts rhizome cutting (324.04 and 326.46 g/hill), while the tip curling only produced 240.0 g/hill. The highest starch yield was obtained from the treatments of both the base and middle parts rhizome cutting i.e. 52.51 and 61.25 g/hill, while the tip cutting produced 47.19 g/hill. There was no interaction efect between the irst and the second factors on fresh rhizome yield. Highest signiicant fresh rhizome yield can also be obtained by using more than one node (320.96 - 337.69 g/hill), while a node cuting gave 198.65 g/hill only. Using base and middle rhizome cutting with 3 nodes gave the effective and eficient result, since it gave higher yield of the resh rhizome starch (70.38 and 72.41 g/hill).

Abstract

Effect of water stress on the quality of Centella asiatica L. simplisiaResearch on the effect of water stress on Centella asiatica L. was done at the Research Institute for Spice and Medicinal Cops, Bogor. fom January 1997 to March 1998. The objective of the research was to increase the quality of C asiatica L simplisia. Six treatments of water stress were applied based on the percentages of field capacity : (1) 100%, (2) 90%, (3) 80%. (4) 70%. (5) 60%, and (6) 50%. A randomized block design with five replications was used, and each replication in one treatment contained four polybags. Each polybag contained 9.25 kg of soil mixed with 750 g of dung, and 3 g of urea, TSP, and KCI respectively. Three plants o/C. asiatica L. fom Banjaran Bandung wee planted in each polybag. The teatment of water stress was applied one month after planting, then the plants were harvested al two months old. Observation of biomass production included : leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of leaves, petiole, and stem. Observation on the quality of simplisia included the contents of the contents of asiaticoside acid, asiatic acid, and madecasic acid. The result indicated that water stress showed negative correlation with biomass accumulation. Inceasing 1% of water stress decreased 191 mg of biomass accumulation. Application of water stess could inceased the quality of C*. asiatica L. simplisia. The optimum of asiaticoside acid at the treatment of 53.9% of field capacity was 3.56%, asiatic acid at the treatment of 65.1% of field capacity was 1.42%. and madecasic acid at the treatment of 68.5% of field capacity was 1.76%.

Abstract

Growth pattern and nutrient uptake of Echinacea purpureaEchinacea purpurea or purple cone flower, belongs lo Aslcraceac family which grown naturally in Noth America. The plant known as is Ihe number one Immune herbs in the world, since it has a greal potential lor improving and developing leukocyte cell activity. Recently, Echinacea has been evalualcd/tcsled as adjuvant in cancer therapy, AIDS and chronic exhaustion. Echinacea purpurea is more potential for immunity improvement lhan those of other herbal medicine. Therefore, the study on its growlh rale, growth pattern, and nutrient uptake in a new tropical environmental condition is very important in order lo suppot its cultivation technology, lo identify the growth pattern, growlh rale, nutrient uptake, and simplisia quality. A ield trial had been conducted in Cipanas at 1 100 m above sea level (asl) in 1999-2000. Plot size was 4x3 m, and plant spacing was 50 x 40 cm. Ten samples was taken from each growth stage of the plants. The growth stages were (I) vegetative I (VI) at I month alter planting (map), (2) vegetative 2 (V2) al 1 .5 map, (3) generative I (Gl) at 2 0 map, (4) generative 2 (G2) at 2.5 map. (5) generative 3 (G3) at 3.0 map. and (6) generative 4 (G4) al 3.5 map. The results of the research showed thai growth rate, nutrient uptake of N, P. K. Mg. and S linearly increased in line with Ihe increase of plan! ages The highest dry weight accumulation was found on aerial part of plant (slem I leal), and the lowest was occurred on root pat. The amount of dry weight accumulation was 75.72 g/plnul. and nutrient uptake oIN, P. K.Ca, Mg, and S. respective!) was 1529.1. 1 40.01. 1943.25, 654.59. 358.66. and 88.57 mg/plant.

Abstract

Status of cadmium and rhizome yield l/temuireng (Cur¬ cuma aeruginosa Roxb.) at by d fferent dosages phos¬ phatefertilizerCadmium is a heavy metal which is for human being. The concentration of Cd in the soil will increase if phosphate fertilizer is applied, because Cd is available in the sediment rock of phosphate as a raw material for phosphate fertilizer. Recently it is said that simplicia of medicinal crops originated from Asia is contaminated with heavy metals. That contamination mainly derives from Ihe environmental growth. Theefore, the research on the status of Cd in rhizomes Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. due phosphate fertilizer is essential to be conducted. The experiment was conducted in the experimental garden of Research Institute for Spice and Medicinal Crops from August 1997 - June 1998. The experiment used polybags which were illed with 25 kg Bogor dry latosol soil mixed with I kg of rice husk and 2 kg cattle manue It used randomized block design (RBD) with four replications and ive samples each treatment. The treatments were (I) no NPK; and 8 dosages of TSP, (2)0; (3)2.5; (4)5; (5)7.5; (6)10.0; (7)12.5; (8)15.0; and (9)20.0g/ polybag respectively. Each TSP treatments was added with 1 5 g uea and 19 g KCI/ polybag. The plant wee harvested at 8.5 month after planting. The results of experiments showed that application of2.5; 5; 7.5; 10; 12.5; 15; and 20 g/polybag of TSP increased dry weight of simplicia from 24.3- 40%. The content of Cd in rhizomes, produced by plant with 5 up to 20 g TSP fertilizer was 1.181 - 2.756 ppm. The Cd content was higher than tolerance limited value as determined by laws of heavy metal in Japan (I ppm) and WHO (0.24 ppm). While fertilizer teatments of 0 and 2.5 g TSP produced rhizomes with Cd content 0.630 - 0.945 ppm, and it is still under tolerance limited value by Japan, but, higher than WHO laws. Due to high Cd content in rhizomes (1.181 - 2.756 ppm), those simplicia can not be used as row material for medicine.

Abstract

Effect of water stress on the production and quality of Sonchus arvensis L.Study on water stress in Sonchus arvensis L was conducted to improve the quality and production of leaves. Pot experiment was conducted at geen house Bogor Research Institute for Spice and Medicinal Crops from July to November 1996, with 7 kg latosol dry soil of Cimanggu Bogor per pot. Randomized block design with four replications were used. Eight treatments of water stess and casting were applied i.e. (I) 100% field capacity (FC) no casting, (2) 100% FC + casting, (3) 80% FC + casting with water stress started at 30 days alter planting (dap), (4) 60% FC + casting with water stess started at 30 dap, (5) 40% FC + casting with water stress started at 30 dap, (6) 80% FC + casting with water stress started at 50 DAP, (7) 60% FC + casting with water stress started at 50 dap, (8) 40% FC + casting with water stress started at 50 dap. Results showed that chlorophyl content leaf aea, fresh and dry weight of leaves deceased at a water stress of 60% FC strated al 30 dap the higher the water stress the lower the measurement of those parameters, but the higher the content of K and Na. The highest yield of fesh and dry leaves, respectively 53.22 and 4.58 g/plant was produced by the plants treated in 100% PC + casting. The plant treated in 40% FC started at 30 dap resulted in the highest quality of simplisia indicated by the highest content of K (8.2%) and Na (0.227%). With the treatment, K and Na conlent increased by 13.6 and 95.7% espectively and the dry weight of simplisia decreased by 62.9%.

Abstract

Meniran (Phyllantus niruri L.) merupakan tanaman liar berkhasiat obat, bahan bakunya sebagian besar diperoleh secara menambang. Pemupukan pada tanaman meniran dalam rangka meningkatkan produktivitas dan mutu belum banyak dilakukan. Percobaan bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pupuk terhadap pertumbuhan dan mutu herba meniran. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Cimanggu dari Januari sampai Juni 2013. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok empat ulangan dengan delapan perlakuan pemupukan. Perlakuan pemupukan terdiri dari (1) kontrol (tanpa pupuk), (2) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang, (3) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+25 kg ha-1 Urea+25 kg ha-1 SP-36+25 kg ha-1 KCl, (4) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+50 kg ha-1 Urea+50 kg ha-1 SP-36+50 kg ha-1 KCl, (5) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+75 kg ha-1 +75 kg ha-1 SP-36+75 kg ha-1 KCl, (6) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+100 kg ha-1 Urea+100 kg ha-1 SP-36+100 kg ha-1 KCl, (7) 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+125 kg ha-1 Urea+125 kg ha-1 SP-36+125 kg ha-1 KCl, dan (8) 125 kg ha-1 Urea+125 kg ha-1 SP-36+125 kg ha-1 KCl. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produksi simplisia kering tertinggi (265 kg ha-1) diperoleh pada perlakuan pemupukan 20 t ha-1 pupuk kandang+100 kg ha-1 Urea+100 kg ha-1 SP-36+100 kg ha-1 KCl. Mutu simplisia yang dihasilkan telah memenuhi standar MMI, walaupun pemupukan tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap mutu simplisia. Untuk menghasilkan simplisia kering 265 kg ha-1, diperlukan 5,697 kg ha-1 N, 0.477 kg ha-1 P, dan 11,368 kg ha-1 K. Secara kualitatif, kandungan metabolit sekunder alkaloid, tanin, saponin, flavonoid, fenolik, triterpenoid, dan glikosida simplisia meniran tidak berbeda nyata pada semua perlakuan pemupukan.

Abstract

Kepel (Stelechocarpus burahol) merupakan tanaman obat langka. Dahulu tanaman kepel hanya ditanam di lingkungan keraton khususnya di Jawa. Tanaman kepel pada umumnya diperbanyak melalui biji, oleh karena itu untuk memperbaiki kualitas dan mempercepat masa produksi maka diperlukan perbanyakan secara sambung pucuk. Tujuan penelitian untuk meningkatkan keberhasilan dan vigor benih hasil sambung pucuk. Penelitian sambung pucuk di laksanakan di rumah kaca, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Rempah dan Obat. Bahan tanaman kepel diperoleh dari Jawa Tengah. Penelitian dimulai dengan penyiapan batang bawah yang diperoleh dari biji kepel disemaikan di bak plastik kemudian setelah berkecambah dipindahkan ke polibag. Setek pucuk diperoleh dari pohon induk berumur lebih kurang 30-50 tahun, diambil dari Jawa Tengah. Perlakuan yang dicobakan adalah: tanpa ZPT (kontrol), luka sayatan di semprot dengan air, 25, 50, dan 100% air kelapa, dan larutan 500 ppm GA3. Percobaan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan tiga ulangan. Setiap ulangan terdiri dari 10 tanaman. Parameter yang diamati adalah, persentase tanaman tumbuh setelah 1, 2, dan 3 bulan grafting, jumlah daun baru, panjang dan jumlah tunas baru. Pengamatan dilakukan setiap bulan selama tiga bulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persentase benih kepel hidup umur tiga bulan setelah penyambungan tertinggi pada perlakuan air (82,64%), tidak berbeda nyata dibandingkan dengan perlakuan 25% air kelapa dan kontrol (kering). Pemberian perlakuan air kelapa 25, 50, dan 100% tidak berpengaruh terhadap peningkatan persentase benih hidup, namun mampu mempertahankan vigor benih dari umur dua bulan sampai tiga bulan setelah penyambungan. Pemberian hormon GA3 dosis 500 ppm tidak berpengaruh terhadap persentase benih hidup, tetapi mampu mempertahahan vigor benih yang tumbuh.
