Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana tulisan siswa di dalam menulis teks analytical exposition di lihat dari struktur teks analytical exposition itu sendiri, yaitu Thesis, Argument, dan Reiteration. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan rubrik penilaian yang di adaptasi dari teori Hamp-Lyons yang digunakan oleh tim assessors yang ahli di bidang writing dan penulis sendiri untuk menilai tulisan siswa tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah menulis teks analytical exposition berdasarkan tiga buah topik berbeda. Penelitian ini dilakukan di MAN 2 Padang untuk siswa kelas XII tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Jumlah tulisan siswa yang terkumpul adalah 100 buah teks, dan 25 buah teks di ambil secara acak sebagai sampel untuk di analisis. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis thesis, argument dan reiteration termasuk kedalam kategori good. Untuk hasil yang lebih baik lagi, guru Bahasa Inggris diharapkan untuk banyak memberikan latihan menulis  kepada siswa untuk berbagai jenis teks di dalam Bahasa Inggris, khususnya teks analytical exposition. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya dapat menggunakan penelitian ini sebagai referensi untuk mengembangkan penelitian berkaitan dengan teks analytical exposition yang lebih baik lagi kedepannya.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss about the use of The Show Don’t Tell  technique which can develop students’ writing ability. In the beginning, the teacher explains the elements of descriptive text. Next, the theacher can use The Show Don’t Tell technique as an exercise to help the students develop ther writing ability.in this activity, the students will be divided into some groups which consist of ,at least, five students. After that, each group is asked to prepare the sheet that will be used to write after the teacher give a picture as a topic. The topic of each group will be different one and another. Next, each student in each group write a sentence which relates to the topic given. They will do this activity until the last member in each group. Before they submit the paper, the teacher asks them to check the correctness of their writing with their group. After applying this activity, it is hoped that students’ ability in writing descriptive text will increase and also can get their interest to write descriptive text easily because this activity is really fun.

Abstract

This research discusses about spelling errors which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter. Participants in this research are Office Administration Students in SMK N 3 Padang, XI AP 1 class which consists of 24 students. The identified problems of this research are what kinds of spelling errors—insertion, omission, substitution, and transposition errors—which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter, and what kinds of parts of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. The objectives of this research are to find out what kinds of spelling error which are committed by the students, and what kinds of part of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. Writing test is an instrument that is used in this research. The result of this research shows that students commit all kinds of spelling errors in their writing, and students’ spelling errors also occur in all kinds of parts of speech. Students’ spelling errors mostly occur in substitution error in their writing. Then, noun part is the highest part which occurs from students’ spelling errors.

Abstract

The ability to write an explanation text is the ability that must be acquired by grade XII students in senior high school that is stated in KTSP (School-based curriculum). The research was a descriptive quantitave research entitled “The Grade XII Students’ Ability in Writing an Explanation text as Found at SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh. It was aimed at analyzing the grade XII students’ ability in writing an explanation text viewed from the generic structure and the language features. The population of the research was the grade XII students in SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh, and the sample was 20 students of XII IPA 2 class. The students were asked to write an explanation text and their writings were analysed using the scoring rubric of the explanation text that consisting of two aspects, generic structure and language features. Based on the findings, four students were at the excellent level, seven students were at the very good level, five students were at the good level, four students were at the fair level, and there was no students in the poor level. Overall, the grade XII students’ ability in writing an explanation text as found at SMA N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh was at the good level.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are (1) To describe types of questions asked by teachers in teaching and learning process, (2) To know what language used by teachers in teaching English. This research is descriptive research. Object from this research are two English teachers at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang. The data collection used two instruments are  audio recording and note taking. The data from this research  are questions asked by teacher based on suggested by Wanjryb (1992). From this research, researcher found that open ended questions are mostly occur in the classroom beside ; yes/no questions, short answer questions, display questions, referential questions and non retrieval questions. During research, there are three kind of languages that used by teachers are English, mixed English –Indonesian, and Indonesian.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of written corrective feedback used by English  teachers of a junior high school on student’s grammatical errors , and problems related to written corrective feedback on grammatical errors from the teacher’s perspectives. This is a descriptive research in which the population was all of English teacher of MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. By using maximal variation sampling technique, all of the teachers, who were five teachers, were chosen to be the sample. The first instrument used was documents which were notebooks and exercise books of the students of the school in the year 2015/2016, and the second instrument was interview with the teachers. From the research, it was found that only three types of the five types were practiced by the teachers. They were, consecutively written from the most frequently used to the least, direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback and metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. In addition, problems related to written CF were repetition of errors, students proficiency, student’s attitude, time-consuming, ineffectiveness of existing error feedback practice, and readability of students writing. Therefore, English teacher, future teachers should enrich their knowledge of written corrective feedback, optimizing their correction to optimize the benefits to the students language development and find solution to solve problem related to written corrective on students’ grammatical error.

Abstract

In this paper, the writer discusses about classroom management that is done by a teacher. Classroom management is the ability of a teacher to organize, nurture, and manage the learning environment and the talents of its students  become better, focused, and organized so that time can be used efficiently. The objective of classroom management is to provide facilities for a variety of learning activities of students in the social, emotional, and intellectual in the classroom. In the management class, the most important is the role of manager of the class or the teacher. Teachers play a role in selecting the most effective learning strategies and also design the class curriculum. Implementation of an effective role of the teacher will create a learning environment that is more convenient, interactive and active and effective. This paper is expected to provide new insights to teachers and educators about the role of classroom management can create an effective English learning. The teacher should implemented the classroom management effectively so can create an effective English learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs presented in sentences from English into Indonesian and the difficulties that they face in translating them. The population of this research was English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who registered in academic year of 2013 and the subject of this research was chosen using simple random sampling. The problems that were discussed in this research were how the students’ ability in understanding phrasal verbs through translating them and what difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. The instrument used in this research was a translation test. The result of the research showed that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good, with the score 68.1. Based on the students’ translation test result, it could be seen some difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. First, they tended to translate word-per-word and second, they tended to omit the particle of the phrasal verbs. Based on the statements above, it could be said that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good despite of some difficulties that they face in translating them.

Abstract

This research analyse the translation work of the students in translating a news item text from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The design of the research is descriptive research. The population of this research is the first grade students of SMA N 2 Tilatang Kamang, Agam of 2015/2016 academic year. The sample of this research are 35 students chosen by using simple random sampling technique. The focus of this research are the accuracy level of the students’ work in translating a news item and the errors made by the students that make the result of the students’ translation become less accurate or not accurate. The data obtained through translation test as the instrumentation of this research. The data are assessed by using accuracy rating instrument. The result of the research shows that the average score is 1.92, with 32 (91.43%) students of the population are in less accurate level. Based on the students’ translation test result, the errors made by the students related to the accuracy are the addition of the words or information which are not related to the context, the omission the essential words or information, the word-for-word translation, and inappropriate choices of word.
