Abstract

The diversity of bird species can reflect the high biodiversity of an area. it means that birds can be used as a bio-indicator of environmental quality. Determining the quality and level ofenvironmental damage can be seen from the diversity of bird species in the region. Environmental quality will be better if the diversity of bird species in the region is diverse.Birds have an important role in protecting the ecosystem in the Liwa Botanical Garden. The presence of birds in the Liwa Botanical Garden has not been well identified. Therefore thisresearch needs to be done. This research was conducted on 12 October 2019 to 20 October 2019 in the Liwa Botanical Garden, West Lampung. Data collection of bird species isconducted in the morning at 06.30.00-08.30 West Indonesia Time and afternoon at 16.30-18.00 West Indonesia Time, with a combination of the count point and the transect method then all encounters with birds are recorded and identified directly at the study site. After the birds are identified, data is processed to find out Shannon's level index and diversity index. The species diversity index uses the Shannon and Weiner formula. The level of diversity is determined based on the species diversity index. The results showed that there were 15 bird species with a total of 466 individuals with a moderate diversity  index and an evenness index indicating a distressed community.

Abstract

The Liwa Botanical Garden is located in Kubu Perahu Village, Balik Bukit District, West Lampung Regency. The Liwa Botanical Garden has an area of 86 ha, build in 2007 with the theme of Indonesian Ornamental Plants. The Liwa Botanical Garden is one of the destinations that is being developed for tourism activities and used as a recreational object. One of the functions of the Liwa Botanical Garden is as a tourist spot. Plants in the Liwa Botanical Garden are so beautiful. The Liwa Botanical Garden is a bird habitat because it has an abundant source of food for birds. Therefore it is necessary to do an inventory of bird species by conducting research to find out potential bird species that are used as tourist attractions (birdwatching) at the Liwa Botanical Garden. This research was conducted on October 2019. The method used was the point count method and rapid assessment. Based on field observations found 14 species of birds that are not protected and only 1 species of birds included in the protected category. And found 8 types of plants, namely 5 types of trees, 1 species of ferns, 1 species of bushes, and 1 type of reeds.

Abstract

Grasshopper is one of the diurnal cosmopolitan insect, the existence of grasshoppers is very influential for some other animal populations such as birds. It is still lack of information of diversity, distribution, population, and other basic biological aspects of grasshoppers at Kebun Raya Liwa (KRL). To monitor biodiversity, it is necessary to provide informations about the number of individuals, their functions, and roles in the habitat and ecosystem. Therefore it is necessary to conduct the research of these topics. This research was carried out during November to December 2019, at the Taman Hias Kebun Raya Liwa. Grasshoppers were cached in the morning from 06.00 AM to 09.00 AM, day from 10.00 AM to 02.00 PM, and afternoon from 03.00 PM to 06.00 PM . The grasshoppers was cached using a sweeping net by exploring the Taman Hias Kebun Raya Liwa. The caught grasshopper was identified at the Zoology Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Lampung. The result show that ten species of grasshopper were found at the Taman Hias Kebun Raya Liwa, i.e. Phaleoba antennata, Phaleoba fumosa, Phaleoba rustica, Atractomorpha crenulata, Atractomorpha sp., Phillium crurifolium, Phillium sp, Trilophidia annulata, Oxya chienensis, and Melanoplus differentialentialis. The index diversity of grasshopper at the Taman Hias Kebun Raya Liwa is categorized to moderate with H' = 2.223. The best time to catch grasshoppers is in the morning from 06.00 AM-09.00 AM and afternoon from 03:00 PM – 05:00 PM.

Abstract

The diversity of freshwater fish in Way Sindalapai River is quite abundant but there has not been much study on the diversity of fish in Way Sindalapai River. This study aims to determine the diversity of freshwater fish species in Way Sindalapai River, Liwa Botanical Garden. The study began with a preliminary survey with a purposive sampling method and sampling was carried out at 3 sampling locations. The tools used in this study include fishing nets (gill nets), fishing rods, scoop, traditional fishing gear (raas), Global Positioning System (GPS), rulers, and cameras. The sampling points include upstream, middle, and downstream areas. The method used in sample identification is by measuring the morphometry of the samples directly at the sampling location which includes total length, standard length, head length, and height, and collection of fish samples photos. Research parameters and data analysis include environmental factors, the diversity index, the evenness index, and the dominance index. The results showed that 170 fishes were found, 8 species, 2 families, and 4 genera. The fish diversity index in the Way Sindalapai river is included in the medium category from the Shanon-Wiener index calculation results, starting from the upstream, middle, downstream, respectively 1.37; 1,34 and 1,22. Evenness index at all locations are included in the low category from the Shannon-Evenness index calculation results, respectively 0.16; 0.14; and 0.12. The dominance index at all locations is included in the low category based on Simpson's dominance index, which has a value of 0.35; 0.32; and 0.28. Based on the conservation status of the IUCN Red List, ichthyofauna in the Way Sindalapai river is 5 species of low risk (least concern) namely Barbodes microps (wader goa), Rasbora bunguranensis (seluang), Barbodes binotatus (wader cakul), Thynnichtys thynnoides (lumoh), Channa striata (bogo). One species that is critically endangered is Rasbora tawarensis (depik), and two species are lacking information (data deficient) namely Rasbora sumatrana (seluang), and Rasbora semilineata (seluang)

Abstract

Dengue fever was one of the dangerous diseases due to it might cause death in a short time. It transmitted through its vectors, namely, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Maya index is an indicator that used to identify a high-risk area or not as a breeding ground for Aedes sp. The purpose of this study was to determine the type of landfill which has the potential as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, to find out the larvae found in various landfill sites, and to know the Maya index status in Metro Timur Subdistrict which was carried out in November-December 2017. This research conducted by a direct survey of 100 residents' houses in East Metro. The results indicated that the type of controlled water reservoir that had the most potential as a breeding place for mosquitoes was a bathtub, while the type of water reservoir that was not controlled which had the potential as a place for mosquito breeding was a fish pond usage. There were 2 types of larvae found, namely, Aedes aegypti larvae with a percentage of 47.7% and Aedes albopictus larvae with a percentage of 52.3%. The Maya index status detected there, was a medium category, which obtained from the BRI combination and HRI category. Besides, it did not mean that the area has been free from dengue cases. The role of the community is still very much needed in eradicating landfills which has the potential as a breeding place for dengue mosquitoes vector.

Abstract

The residue of paraquat herbicides may cause human health problems. Paraquat causes the testosterone hormone to decline. Testosterone hormone affects aggressive and sexual behavior. It is caused by free radicals in the body. Free radicals can be non-reactive if in the body there are antioxidants. Red ginger could be used as an antioxidant because it has active phenolic compounds, such as arginine, gingerol, shogaol, zingerone, gingerdiol, and zingiber. Ginger could increase serum testosterone levels. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of red ginger ethanol extract on aggressiveness and libido of male mice induced by paraquat herbicide. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (RAL) consisting of six treatment groups with four replications each. Group P1 as control (aqua dest), P2 (paraquat at dose 20 mg/kg BM), P3, P4, P5 (paraquat with dose 20 mg/kg BM and red ginger extract at 200 mg/kg BM, 400 mg/kg BM, 600 mg/kg BM) and P6 (red ginger extract at 600mg/kg BM). Paraquat is given 2 times a week for 21 days and the red ginger extract is given daily for 35 days. The result of analysis with One-way ANOVA and continued BNT at 5% showed that giving of red ginger ethanol extract can increase aggressive behavior and libido of male mice induced paraquat herbicide.

Abstract

The weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina) is a eusocial insect, whose colonic life is highly dependent on the existence of trees. The existence of the weaver ant in natural habitat is now reduced due to the destruction of habitats caused by humans. To preserve the existence of weaver ant in nature needs to be studied bioecology as the purpose of this research is to know the characteristics of habitus and environment of weaver ants nest in Bandar Lampung. The research was conducted in June-October 2017 at the location of yard and plantation, using 50% sample from the sample population, from 20 districts in Bandar Lampung, 10 sub-districts were used as randomly selected research sites. The results showed as many as 15 types of plants used weaver ant for nesting. The most widely planted species of weaver ant is Mangifera sp. with characteristics of slippery surface habitus, sympodial branching, tree height of 3.9 to 11.5 m and an average canopy of> 65%, more nests found in yards (76%) far from urban areas, the percentage of the dominant nest toward the east , which is 41.8% of the total number of 86 nests.

Abstract

Paraquat is one of the chemicals that contributes to increasing pollution Indonesia. The careless use of paraquat can increase production of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species), resulting in damage to a wide range of vital organs and reproductive system disorders such as infertility. ROS in the body can be captured by antioxidants. Red Ginger contains high antioxidants because there are active phenolic compounds such as gingerol, shagaol, zingeron, ginggerdiol, and zingibren which are proven to protect body cells from damage caused by ROS. This study was aimed to test the effectiveness of red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale Roxb. Var. Rubrum) on the quantity and quality of sperm in male mice (Mus musculus L.) induced by paraquat dichloride.This research uses a completely randomized design and is divided into six treatment groups with each four replications: K1 as the control group (only given H2O); K2 (paraquat induced a dose of 20 mg/kg Body Weight (BW) without the administration of the test substances); K3; K4; K5 (paraquat induced a dose of 20 mg/kg Body Weight (BW) and was given a red ginger extract at a dose of consecutive succession 6 mg / ml, 12 mg / ml, 18 mg / ml) and K6 (Only given a test material the red ginger extract as much as 18 mg / ml). Paraquat was given 2 times a week for 21 days and the red ginger extract was given for 35 days. The results of analysis by One-way ANOVA followed LSD at 5% significance level showed the ethanolic extract of red ginger can increase the sperm count, motility, viability and Morphology sperm of mice induced by the paraquat diklorida.

Abstract

Spiders are organisms that can adapt to various environments throughout the earth's surface from arctic regions to desert areas. Many spiders occupy areas with low vegetation and shrubs. The Liwa Botanical Garden has dense vegetation which is an ideal habitat for spiders. This study aims to determine the diversity and abundance of spiders (arachnids) in open and closed areas in the Liwa Botanical Garden. The research was conducted in November - December 2019. Spiders were sampled using a survey method by making line transects at predetermined locations. Sampling using sweep nets and pit traps. The spiders found were identified in the Zoology Laboratory, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Lampung, and their relative abundance was calculated. The results showed that 249 individual spiders were grouped into 9 families and 21 species. The family with the highest number of individuals was Aranidae, while the least number of families was Phalangiidae.

Abstract

Monyet ekor panjang (Macaca fascicularis) adalah primata yang mudah beradaptasi dengan aktivitas manusia. Jenis monyet ini mudah dijumpai di kawasan hutan yang dekat dengan kawasan pemukiman, perladangan, dan perkebunan, contohnya adalah area Youth Camp di Taman Hutan Raya Wan Abdul Rachman di Kabupaten Pesawaran, Lampung. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan menggunakan Metode Observasi dari bulan Agustus sampai September 2012 di areal Youth Camp Taman Hutan Raya Wan Abdul Rachman Lampung. Parameter yang diamati adalah saat monyet istirahat (immobile), yaitu diam, berdiri, duduk, tidur, serta posisi saat mencari lokasi untuk tidur pada suatu pohon sehingga dapat diketahui jenis pohonnya. Data yang terkumpul diinterpretasikan secara deskriptif. Terdapat enam jenis pohon yang digunakan untuk tidur yaitu bambu (Bambusa sp.), dahu (Dracontomelon dao Merr. Et Rolfe.), ki hujan (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Merr.), pulai (Alstonia pneumatophora Back. Ex don Berger.), dadap (Erythrina variegate L.), benda (Artocarpus elasticus Reinw. ex Blume). Pohon untuk tidur monyet ekor panjang berkarakteristik tinggi dan memiliki tajuk yang luas, serta dekat dengan sumber air.
