Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Verhar's books entitled Pengantar Linguistik (Introduction to Linguistics) published by Gadjah Mada University Press and its elaborative edition Asas-asas Linguistik (The Principles of Linguistics) of the same publisher constitute linguistic works which strongly influence the development and advancement of linguistic studies in Indonesia. The innovations brought by these books are clearly seen in their formal approach towards linguistic units as the material object of any linguistic investigation. Long before the appearance of those Verhar's books, Indonesian Linguists or linguists of bahasa Indonesia had been shackled by the traditional (notional) approach, as shown in the works of Alisjahbana (1978); Mees (1955); Zain (1943); Lubis (1954) (see Ramlan, 1985). Their traditional approach is a reflection of the strong influence of Greece grammar. Meanwhile, the formal approach practised by the modern linguists, in many respects, is much more objective than that of the traditional one. The modern approach is used, for examples, to identify linguistic units (such as morphemes, words, sentences, etc.), parts of speech, syntactic functions and their fillers, sentence types, etc. Despite those advantages, Verhaar's works also conceal various linguistic problems which are either related to Indonesian, foreign or local languages in Indonesia. The problems presented in those books are very interesting, and frequently challenging for linguists to think of or give them some corrections or solutions. The superiority of these books has been discussed by Alif (2002) in a regional conference held by University of Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta to commemorate the one hundredth day of the author's death. Accordingly, as a token of my respect to his service in developing Indonesian linguistics and his dedication to Gadjah Mada University, where he was formerly a visiting professor in Faculty of Letters (now Faculty of Cultural Sciences), I would like to discuss one important problem which exists in his second book Asas-asas Linguistik. The problem concerns with Indonesian vowels and their allophonic distribution, especially / i/ and /u/ in Indonesian syllabic systems. These problems have not been so far satisfactorily clarified in Indonesian phonology.

Abstract

This paper aims to show the role of linguistic competence in the Indonesian folk tale writing activities, especially the writer for whom Balinese is not his or her native language. Some linguistic mistakes found in the story book entitled "Cerita Rakyat dari Bali" indicate that the linguistic competence is as important as the cultural knowledge has to be owned by every writer. The linguistic clumsiness will certainly disturb the smoothness of the story telling and the nature of the folk tales.

Abstract

This essay is about the maintenance of Banyumas dialect. This dialect is considered more inferior compared to its standard variant of the Solo-Yogya dialect. Because of its less prestigous status, the speaker of this rural variant, especially those who belong to the younger and educated generation do not speak their own native tongue anymore, but shift to a wider means of communication, the standard variant, Yogya Solo dialect or their national language, Bahasa Indonesia. There are at least two ways which should be carried out to maintain the existence of Banyumas dialect. Firstly the government must create a condition which allows its speakers to use their mother tongue and pass it down to younger generation. Secondly, all Banyumas speakers should posses linguistic pride and awareness that all languages are linguistically the same. Differences in status which exist between languages are a matter of social judgment.

Abstract

This paper discusses refusals in English and in Indonesian and is presented within the framework of pragmatics. The goal is to describe and compare the language politeness strategies used in refusals of both languages. Three hundred and ninety refusals in English and 390 refusals in Indonesian were used as data corpus. Both languages employ some strategies found in Brown and Levinson’s compiled language politeness strategies. However, as compared to refusals in Indonesian, more refusals in English are expressed in single speech acts and combination of two speech acts. Fewer refusals are expressed in combination of three and four speech acts. Refusals in English and in Indonesian also have different inclination in the use of speech act types to express refusals.

Abstract

It is certainly true that repetition plays very important role in sentence and discourse writing because its existence is intended to give stress on linguistic expressions emphasized in the sentence or discourse in which it occurs. However, in composition writing, it is also often found repetitions which do not show any clear function as emphatic devices, and their occurrence tends to bore the readers. These types of repetition reflect the lack of the writers’ ability in producing more interesting and variative sentences. To avoid such phenomena, the knowledge of discourse cohesiveness should always be exposed in any composition writing class because this theory describes various ways of creating cohesiveness besides the repetition itself.

Abstract

Generally speakers of bahasa Indonesia use di mana as a question word for asking location of the state or action expressed in information interogative sentences. However, the impact of English usage nowadays made the use of di mana is strongly influenced by English word where to which this Indonesian question word is equivalent. Therefore the use of di mana in students essays writings shows that di mana is not merely functioned as question word, but also as copula, relative clause marker, interclausal and intersentencial conjunctions, and other markers which are difficult to identify because they do not have any equivalent in English.
