Abstract

Penggalian nilai-nilai antikorupsi dari peribahasa Minangkabau sebagai upaya pembangunan karakter bangsa dapat dikelompokkan menjadi delapan kategori. Pertama, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang bertentangan dengan sikap dan perilaku korupsi. Kedua, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang mencerminkan situasi, Ketiga, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang mencerminkan keinginan yang tidak bertepi atau nafsu para pelaku korupsi. Keempat, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung elemen-elemen makna yang dapat menjelma menjadi nilai yang dapat disalahtafsirkan oleh manusia dan dibelokkan sesuai dengan keinginan mereka. Kelima, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang mencerminkan keberpihakan kepada pelaku korupsi. Keenam, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang mencerminkan bagaimana pelaku korupsi bersikap dan berperilaku setelah pada akhirnya mereka terbukti melakukan korupsi atau perbuatan mereka diketahui oleh masyarakat. Ketujuh, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang tetap menjaga, memelihara, dan menghargai sisi-sisi kemanusiaan dari pelaku korupsi. Dan kedelapan, peribahasa Minangkabau mengandung nilai-nilai yang meng-gambarkan penyesalan pelaku korupsi setelah melakukan suatu tindakan atau perbuatan korupsi.

Abstract

Minangkabau is identical with  matrilineal system.  Women are at the respected position in society.  However, many Minangkabau women become the victims of violence. These Minangkabau women are verbally violated. These verbal violences are categorized as an action called speech act.   This writing then tries to describe the speech acts of the perpetrators of the violence toward Minangkabau women. The aim of the research is to identify the types of speech act of the perpetrators of violence toward Minangkabau women from psychopragmatic perspective. The research was conducted in Padang city. The data were are collected by having interview, focus group discussion, and observation toward around 10  women, 2 community leaders, and 20 society members. The analysis was done by relating it to the concept of speech act  by Austin (1962), Revita (2014), and  Searle (1969). The result of analysis is descriptively presented. The data indicated that there are four types of speech acts used by the perpetrators of the violence toward Minangkabau women. They are 1) declaration; 2) expressive; 3) comissive; and 4) directive

Abstract

This article contains a study of lexical metaphors used in the selected poems of Sylvia Plath entitled “Full Fathom Five”, “The Colossus”, “I am Vertical”, “Ariel”, “Lady Lazarus” and “Edge” which focused on representation of sequence changes of death ideas in the poems. This research is conducted by using systemic functional linguistics theory, especially lexical metaphor by Halliday. It is used to look at the data classification of lexical metaphors. As a qualitative descriptive research, it is assisted by using descriptive statisticin doing the analysis. It aims to find out several important formulas such as mean, modus and percentage from the occurence of lexical metaphor. The result of the analysis shows that there are lexical metaphor with noun-noun concept 50.9%, then the concept of noun-verb 38.6% and noun-adjective 10.5%. The dominance of lexical metaphor occurence with noun-noun concept is the representation of death ideas changes in each poem, including death as unacceptable thing, an unavoidable choice, gate for a rebirth and final solution to all life's problems

Abstract

This writing is aimed at describing the phenomena of terms of address used by English Department Students when they are interacting with their lecturers in the class. Two main problems are analysed here, (1) the forms of the terms of address used by English Depratment Students and (2) the influence of  l terms of addreoca culture in choosing the form of the terms  to  address their lecturers in class interaction. Data are the terms of address used by English Department Students who are taking and already have taken Pragmatics Course. The data are takan by observational method, recording,  note-taking, and interviewing technique. Pragmatic, Referential, and Translational Identity methods are used to analyze the data by applying the concept  of  terms of address proposed by Holmes (1992) and  context Yule (1996). The result of analysis is presented descriptively. Having been analyzed, it is found that there are five forms of terms  used by English Department Students to address their lecturers. They are (1) GU+GP+NP; (2) GK+NP; (3) GU+NP; (4) GH+NP; and (5) Bunda. The local culture that influences the choices of this terms of address are (1) raso jo pareso and (2) malu jo sopan.

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the maxims of politeness used by female sellers in a traditional market in Sumatera Barat. The research was conducted in one tradititonal market in Sumatera Barat, namely Batu Sangkar. The data are any utterances produced by female sellers in a traditional market in a traditional market in Batu Sangkar.  The data were  taken by the observational method with note-taking, recording, and interviewing techniques. The analysis was done by using the concept proposed by (Oktavianus & Revita, 2013; Leech, 1983). The result of the analysis was descriptively done and used the chart. The percentage was also used to identify the number of maxims that occurred. Having analyzed the data, it is found that the female sellers used four maxims in their interaction with the buyers. They are 1)  tact, 2) agreement, and  3)modesty. There are two types of agreement between the sellers and the buyers, namely using 1) verbal and 2) non-verbal agreement.  The non-verbal agreement is the indication of the insincerity of the sellers of the price bargained by the buyers. The sellers do not get much profit from the price offered by the buyers.

Abstract

This article analyses expressive utterances as found in Zach Sang Show on YouTube. This video is an interview of Zach Sang and the Gang to Selena Gomez as the guest of the show. The aim of this research is to analyse the types of expressive utterances and identify the functions of the expressive utterances found in the interview. Data were collected by using observational method and note-taking technique. Data were studied by using pragmatic identity method. Data were analyzed by using theory of types of expressive utterances proposed by Ronan (2015) and theory of function of expressive utterances proposed by Searle and Venderveken (1985). Data presented in narration and by using tables. Expressive utterances found in the video are 87 utterances. The writer finds 10 types of expressive utterance. They are agreement, volition, disagreement, compliment, pride, expressing sorrow, thanking, greetings, non-directed complaints in exclamations and apologizing. The most dominant type of expressive utterances is agreement. It shows the same perception between the speaker and the interlocutor. There are 14 functions of expressive utterance. They are to please, to desire, to agree, to disagree, to compliment, to boast, to lament, to thank, to greet, to complain, to surprise, to apologize, to congratulate and to praise. The most dominant function of the expressive utterances is to please. It shows the feeling of satisfaction, enjoyment and convenient to the proposition.

Abstract

English as international language is learned by many people allover the world. In certain country, like Indonesia, English is stillregarded as foreign language different from in Philippine orMalaysia in which English is their second language. Thesedifferent positions make the emergence of various ways ofteaching English. This writing is aimed at describing one way ofteaching English called communicative approach. The object ofthis writing is to see the advantages and weaknesses of thismethod applied for the beginners. The research is conducted atEnglish Department Andalas University where third yearstudents become the subject. Data are collected by observationalmethod with note-taking and interviewing technique. Theanalysis is done by using referential identity method related tothe concept proposed by Savignon (2002). The result of analysisis descriptively presented. Having analyzed data, it is found threeadvantages and three weaknesses of using communicativeapproach in teaching English for 3rd year English Departmentstudents. The advantages are (1) enhancing students’ competencein speaking English in various situation; (2) encouraging studentsto practice their English in real communication; (3) stimulatingthe students to speak communicatively; (4) motivating studentsto be brave interacting using English. The weaknesses are (1)focusing much on meaning not form; (2) regarding learningstructure is useless and irrelevant; and (3) discouraging studentswho have lack vocabularies to speak.Keywords: Communicative Approach, English as anInternational language, English communication

Abstract

This study is an attempt to observe the traditional forms and the use of quantity-indicating quantifiers in Minangkabau Language. The data are taken from one of Minangkabau dialects—Tanah Datar. Having been referred to the structural theories, the quantifiers in Minangkabau language are variously categorized based on nouns following as well as the result of the action.

Abstract

This paper aims at describing the ways how Minangkabau people request. These ways are prospected from the syntactical form and the types of the request. The factors influencing the choice of these ways are also observed. The data are taken from Minangkabau utterances used in Padang. The results of the research indicate that Minangkabau people use declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamative sentences to make requests. Further, the result shows that the requests can be expressed in direct, indirect, literal, non literal, direct literal, indirect literal, direct non literal, indirect non literal types depending on the participants, the situation, the topics, and the norms.

Abstract

Penulisan tesis ini bertujuan untuk menemukan gangguan reseptif mahasiswa dalam menjawab soal-soal listening. Selanjutnya dijelaskan juga bentuk gangguan reseptif mahasiswa dan dideskripsikan perbedaan tuturan antara penutur dengan pendengar berdasarkan uji speech analyzer pada mahasiswa, serta dijelaskan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan perbedaan pemahaman antara penutur dan pendengar. Data penelitian ini adalah tuturan lisan dan tulisan mahasiswa yang mengalami gangguan reseptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode simak, pada data gangguan reseptif ini digunakan teknik dasar: teknik sadap, teknik lanjutan yang terdiri dari teknik simak libat cakap (SLC), teknik rekam, teknik catat dan teknik rekam dengan speech analyzer. Untuk analisis data digunakan metode agih dilanjutkan dengan teknik dasar berupa teknik bagi unsur langsung yang dilanjutkan dengan teknik lesap, teknik ganti, dan teknik ulang. Berdasarkan hasil analisis ditemukan beberapa bentuk gangguan reseptif, perbedaan tuturan antara penutur dengan pendengar bardasarkan uji speech analyzer, dan apa penyebab perbedaan pemahaman penutur dengan pendengar dalam mendengar teks lisan. Kemudian dalam memahami makrostruktur seperti gangguan dalam mencari tema pokok suatu cerita dengan persentase berat adalah 95,2% normal adalah 4,8%. Gangguan dalam meringkas 80% (berat) dan 20% (ringan), menangkap pesan implisit 16% (berat), 63% ringan dan 21% normal. Gangguan daya ingat 56,2 (berat), 43,8% normal. Kemudian penulis juga menemukan gangguan pragmatik seperti pragmatik reseptif, gangguan dalam memaknai pesan moral 21% (berat), 37% (ringan), 42% (normal), gangguan dalam penginterpratasian humor suatu cerita, dan gangguan koherensi.
