Abstract

This paper aims to determine the sanitation and health conditions of the people on the banks of the Deli river which are constructed socially and culturally. The problem is focused on community participation in treating household waste, using toilets, and obtaining clean water sources and their relationship to public health. Data were collected based on an ethnographic approach, namely through observation and in-depth interviews which were analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study are the residents of the riverbanks of Deli who live in illegal settlements, carry out activities such as toilets in the river and at the same time use the river as a place for household waste disposal. Activities aimed at maintaining personal hygiene and health are carried out in rivers as well as places for disposing of sewage and household waste. The activity of using rivers as a place to dispose of human and household waste is one of the factors of poor sanitation that affects health status. This study concludes that the sanitary conditions in the residential banks of the Deli River are caused by economic and knowledge factors. Improving the riverbank sanitation system requires collaboration between the community, government and health educators.

Abstract

This paper aims to determine the patterns of occupation of public space and land tenure carried out by the Youth Organization in the City of Medan. The intended public space is a parking lot, security of traditional markets and entertainment venues, located in a location controlled by one of the youth organizations, this location must be protected so that it is not controlled by other youth organizations. The research method used is the qualitative method with ethnographic approach and data collection techniques using participant observation and interviews. The results of this study explain the pattern carried out in controlling this public space by collaborating (patron-client) with related parties such as regional market companies, the Department of Transportation and the City Government. The collaboration was carried out by providing a number of accommodation funds to the service in the form of deposits and tenders. The cooperating with private parties such as property developers in order to get permission to provide building materials, the tender for the supply of project materials must pass the youth organization, In launching occupation of public space and land tenure. Not a few of the leaders or members of the Youth Organization entered the political sphere such as becoming a member of the DPRD, so the member had the power to distribute tenders or government projects or private.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form commodification of Bali Lestari Beach as a tourist attraction in the District of Pantai Cemin. Commodification is carried out by adopting Balinese culture and renewal of Bali Lestari Coast facilities, as evidenced by this commodification, can increase the number of tourist visits. The research method used is a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, data collection techniques using participatory observation and interviews. The results of this study explain the form of commodification carried out on the Bali Lestari beach by changing the beach brand from Indah to Bali. Then adopt Balinese culture such as traditional Balinese architecture, Balinese arches, paintings of puppet figures, statues and polished saput, which are made in such a way as to be identical to the nuances on the island of Bali. To get the appropriate commodification, the manager renewed and added several supporting facilities such as, water games, photo spots, prayer rooms, bathrooms and restaurants. The increase in visitors creates new jobs for the surrounding community, many of whom are shifting jobs from farming and fishing to traders on the beach. In order to get a permit to sell in this coastal area, the manager charges a low fee to the merchant to be paid. Government participation is also very necessary to develop the Bali Lestari Coast.
