Abstract

Speaking Skill is essential in communication as a foreign language, either in educational qualification or in career achievement. The students have intermediate speaking skill potential to gain further education and to find employment. The problem of this research deals with the fact that most of students are lack of speaking skill. First, particularly the eleventh grade students of Senior High School 3 of Palembang are not motivated to learn and increase their speaking skills. Second, consequently the students are not able to act as interlocutors when the communication occurred. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there is a significant difference of speaking scores of the eleventh grade students taught through Role play with Video blogs (Vlog) from those of the ones taught through a conventional technique at Senior High School 3 of Palembang. This research was True Experimental design (Quantitative). The research was conducted from July to August 2020 by online. The subject of the research was 36 students of the eleventh grade of Senior High School 3 of Palembang. The technique of collecting data used a monologue test. The monologue test was done to know whether there was a significant difference by using role-play with video blogs (vlog) in teaching speaking skill. The students’ average score of the experimental group in the posttest was 53.29 while the students’ average score in the control group was 46.04. Meanwhile the critical value was 0.05 significance level for two-tailed test with 35 (df) was 1.68 since the t-obtained was 11.352, it was higher than the t-table. The result of research showed that there was a significant difference of speaking scores of the eleventh grade students taught through Role-play with Video blog (Vlog) from those of ones taught a conventional technique at Senior High School 3 of Palembang. The use of role play with video blogs (vlog) not only made the students enjoy, fun and relax learning English but also indirectly made the students capable improvise their skill based on their mind.

Abstract

This study was a classroom action research which concerned with the inquiry on how mind mapping technique could improve the reading skill of the tenth-grade students’ of State Senior high School 1 of Ujanmas. This research was conducted into three cycles (cycles 1,2, and 3) and the preliminary stage was initiated before the study was conducted. Each cycle had four steps: plan, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were thirty-five tenth-grade students. The technique for collecting qualitative data employed was an observation, to know the improvement of teaching and learning activities, whereas quantitative data were obtained through a reading test. The research result showed that (1) mind mapping technique could improve the students reading skill, (2) mind mapping technique could enhance students’ motivation in the teaching and learning process, (3) mind mapping technique could increase students’ attention to understand and students were encouraged in asking and answering a question. In conclusion, the tenth-grade students’ reading skills could be improved by using the mind mapping technique.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding whether the use of Think Pair Share improved the second-semester students’ reading ability at Politeknik Sekayu.Related to the purposes of the study, the research design used in this study was classroom action research. The subject of the study was the students of accounting class 2A of Politeknik Sekayu in the academic year of 2019/2020. Data collection included the application of the Think pair Share technique in three cycles. Data were analyzed using quantitatively and qualitatively. The research findings showed that the Think pair Share technique improved students’ reading comprehension. The technique enabled students to practice some reading strategies in the form of individual, pair, and team. The improvement of students’ reading ability can be seen from the result of the reading test which has the percentage score test 1 is 45%, test 2 is 64% and test 3 is 86%. This research also showed that the activities in the Think Pair Share technique enhanced students’ ability in comprehending reading. The conclusion suggested that the application of the Think Pair share technique effectively improved the second-semester students’ reading ability of Politeknik Sekayu.

Abstract

This research was aimed at improving eleventh grade students’ reading ability by using Team-Pair-Solo Technique when it was applied in teaching reading. The research was carried out through action research. The researcher acted with the students and the English teacher as the collaborator. The subjects of the research were 25 students of Eleventh Grade of State Vocational School of 1 Lais, Musi Banyuasin in the academic year of 2019/2020. Data collection included the application of Team Pair Solo Technique in three cycles. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The research findings showed that Team Pair Solo Technique improve students’ reading comprehension. The technique enabled students to practice some reading strategies in the form of team, pair and individual and it ease them in comprehending reading. The improvement of reading comprehension can be seen from the result of reading test which has the mean score test 1 is 44%, test 2 is 72% and test 3 is 86% This research also showed that the activities in Team-Pair-Solo Technique enhanced students’ ability in comprehending reading. It can be concluded that the application of Team Pair Solo Technique effectively improved the eleventh grade students of State Vocational School 1 of Lais Musi Banyuasin

Abstract

This need analysis research aimed to know the source of information that students’ need in the necessities, lacks and wants related to the students’ vocational area.  This study was a qualitative research and the data collected by the primary data of questionnaire to 39 students, teacher interview and the secondary data was the documentation of syllabus. According to Target Situational Analysis (TSA) of students needs in Hospitality Industry Department of Muhammadiyah Vocational High School 3 of Palembang, synchronized with interview and documentation, the students questionnaire revealed the “Necessities” were 81.5% or slightly high to upgrading their skills, not only for the requirement at school. Students “Lacks” in learning English for Specifics Purpose were 61.45% because the students lack of vocabulary. And the potential skills that students need according the “wants” in learning English shows that the most wanted skill is, 1) Speaking (80.95%), 2) Listening (80.8%), 3) Reading (75.9%) and lastly, 4) Writing (75%).   Related to the students needs, the students must practice more and aware with the English as the future needs in academic, career and personal interest to become capable and proficient as the communicative skills. This research was tried to discover the information about the potential needs on English for Specifics Purposes for vocational needs.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the learning styles utilized by students at Nurul Huda Senior High School and their correlation with English achievement. It adopted a correlational design and employed a quantitative methodology to analyze the relationship between students' learning styles and their English performance. The study employed the VAK Model, which encompasses Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learning styles. The questionnaire utilized in the research was developed based on the VAK Learning Style Questionnaire. A total of 30 tenth-grade students from Nurul Huda Senior High School participated in the study. The questionnaire results indicated that the students employed various learning styles: 20% preferred kinesthetic, 56.7% preferred visual, 23.3% preferred auditory, and others exhibited a preference for more than one learning style. Future researchers could explore different theories, employ interviews, and include a larger number of participants. Additionally, conducting similar studies at Nurul Huda Senior High School to analyze other factors influencing students' English achievement would be beneficial. The researcher hopes that by identifying students' learning styles, both students and teachers can become more aware of individual learning preferences within the classroom setting.

Abstract

Despite the benefits technology brings to English learning at school, few teachers were still taking advantage of it. Not only was the iPad was a learning medium with short and medium-term used, it also serves as a device that helps improved student education. The objective of the research is to identify the types of the English teachers attitude towards iPad in teaching and learning processes. However, a descriptive qualitative study was conducted to investigate the attitude of English teachers towards iPad in teaching and learning process at IT Harapan Mulya Junior in Palembang. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis was processed in the form of reduction data, display data, and conclusion drawing and verification data. The results showed that the English teachers provided 90 utterances consisting of 31 cognitive attitudes, 26 conative attitudes, 24 affective attitudes, and 9 evaluative attitudes. Cognitive attitudes was most often exhibited by the teachers. While the lowest was the evaluative attitude.
