Abstract

Despite the increasing number of Indonesian postgraduate students studying overseas, including in the United Kingdom, not many studies have been done on their intercultural communication experiences and academic engagement. This research aims to investigate Indonesian postgraduate students’ intercultural communication experiences and academic engagement in the United Kingdom. In this study, we address the following research question: What are the hindering factors and the facilitating factors of Indonesian postgraduate students’ academic engagement within their courses of study? A qualitative research method is used in this study, based on semi-structured interviews with 13 participants. The results of the study indicate that the students are more engaged in some areas, such applying deep learning strategies by connecting ideas, and less engaged in others, such as interacting with academic staff. Several interrelated factors were indicated as contributing to facilitating or hindering academic engagement which include sociocultural, institutional, and individual factors. The hindering factors consists of the transition to a new academic environment, intense academic workload, ‘expert’ or ‘boring tutors, linguistic barriers, and having feelings of uneasiness. Conversely, the facilitating factors consist of institutional support service, course design, caring and casual tutors, learning from prior experiences, having the initiative to ask, and realizing to make the most of the opportunity.

Abstract

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted educational communication, as traditional teaching and learning have been replaced by online digital teaching and learning. Thus, teachers must adapt quickly to new technology to meet the lesson objectives and successfully deliver their lessons. This study explores teachers’ adaptation experience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was gathered in Mutiara Bunda Elementary School, an inclusive private school in Bandung with religious education at its core. In-depth interviews and introspection were conducted with four Islamic education teachers across grades. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that teachers went through five overlapping stages: confusion, trial and error, capacity building, adaptation, and efforts to find new solutions. However, different challenges were faced by each teacher according to the grades they taught. Even though teachers had finally adapted and transformed the teaching and learning experience, traditional face-to-face communication was still preferred by 1st to 3rd-grade teachers to deliver the lessons effectively. Lack of the teachers’ IT skills to deliver the lessons to develop the students’ character, inexperience in online teaching, and the students’ low motivation to learn through the digital platform clearly constitute the main obstacle in this religious, educational process.

Abstract

Background: The stunting prevalence rate is still a significant concern that must be resolved in Indonesia, especially in West Java. The latest data obtained from SSGI (2022) states that out of 27 districts/cities in West Java, four districts/cities have a high stunting prevalence (30%-39.9%) which are Garut Regency, Cianjur Regency, Bandung Regency, and Cirebon City. Garut is in the public spotlight because it has the highest stunting prevalence in West Java. Purpose: Therefore, referring to these data, researchers are interested in knowing the health communication polemic in responding to Garut Regency’s acceleration of reducing stunting prevalence. Method: The research approach used is qualitative research with a case study method. In Garut, stunting is a critical issue and is still being worked on. This study used in-depth interviews to collect data from five informants, participatory observation, and a literature study. Results: The results of the study showed exciting findings, including First, the existence of social, cultural, and economic factors as the cause of the health communication polemic in the acceleration of reducing Garut Regency’s stunting prevalence; Secondly, the health communication process has been conducted to accelerate a stunting reduction in Garut Regency; and thirdly, the need for health communication planning evaluation for accelerating stunting reduction so that even this has become a polemic until now. Conclusion: The health communication program planning evaluation carried out should be able to determine the next steps that must be taken so that this health communication polemic can be resolved immediately. Implications: The findings from this research have implications for the development of the next accelerated stunting reduction program, especially in Garut. The existence of an evaluation of the communication program is an important note that can be considered to realize the achievement of Indonesia Emas 2024.
