Abstract

This research aimed to provide an empowerment medium to the people of Medan city through fostering graffiti drawing  base on the local wisdom of Malay Deli as a form of creative entrepreneurship. Employing a qualitative method, this research collected the data through observation, interview and documentation. The results showed that graffiti art creativity may be used as a medium to introduce and revitalize Malay Deli local wisdom values through the use of the icon Pak Belalang and Malay Deli Pantun. The icon Pak Belalang in this research served  to be an informative, communicative and motivative icon in introducing and preserving Malay Deli Pantun. Malay Deli Pantun in this research has the local wisdom values of Malay Cultures such as moral values including the values of responsibility, tolerance, hard work, democratic and nationality, ethical values including the values of cleanliness, security,order, beauty and kinship and norms values including the norms of legal, morality, decency, and habit. Therefore, it can be concluded that empowering and fostering Medan people to become independent and creative entrepreneurs can be conducted by optimising the graffiti drawing creatifity in making the souvenirs based on local wisdom of Malay Deli using Pak belalang icon and pantuns of Malay Deli.

Abstract

The lack of the students ' interest and attention toward the local wisdom values of the local culture is this research background. The phenomena are due to the absence of interactive media to strengthen character education based on local wisdom in school. The purpose of this research is to create an interactive media based on local wisdom values with the implementation of the iconic card to strengthen the local wisdom values of Malay culture which is useful to build students’ character education. The research used a qualitative descriptive method with social anthropolinguistics approach. The subject of this research was students of Nurul Hasanah Senior High School, Medan. The data were collected through field observation, interview, and documentation. The results showed that the iconic card might be used as a media to teach Malay wisdom values with the use of the Pak Belalang icon and Malay pantun. Pantun in this research has local wisdom values of Malay culture such as moral, ethical and norm values. Therefore, it can be concluded that the iconic card can be used as media in strengthening the local wisdom values of Malay culture that useful for students' character education.

Abstract

Abstrak: Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kecakapan komunikasi berbahasa Inggris para pendidik melalui pelatihan tes berbahasa Inggris TOEIC sebagai upaya pengembangan kompetensi dan profesionalitas guru. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan memberikan pelatihan berupa penyampaian materi, diskusi dan simulasi tes TOEIC meliputi kemampuan menyimak dan membaca. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 20 guru SMA Harapan 3, Deli Serdang. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan kompetensi guru terhadap tes TOEIC. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari angket dan nilai tes TOEIC guru setelah diajarkan dan dilatih dalam kegiatan. Hasil angket menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan guru terhadap tes TOEIC dengan persentase memperoleh 95%. Dan peningkatan kompetensi berbahasa Inggris guru dari hasil nilai simulasi tes TOEIC, setelah kegiatan dilaksanakan menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan menyimak guru memperoleh skor 395 dengan 72 soal jawaban benar dan kemampuan membaca memperoleh skor 390 dengan 80 soal jawaban benar.Abstract:  The aim of community service is to improve communication skills of English educators through TOEIC English test as an effort to develop the competence and professionalism of teachers.   The implementation method of this activity is carried out by providing a training in the form of material teaching, discussion and TOEIC simulation test including listening and reading skills. This activity was attended by 20 teachers of Harapan 3 High School, Deli Serdang. The results of the activity showed that there was an improvement in the competence and skill of teachers to the TOEIC test. This can be seen from the questionnaires and TOEIC test scores of teachers after being taught and trained in the activity. The results of the questionnaire showed an improvement in teachers’ knowledge and competence to the TOEIC test with a percentage average of 95%. And the results of the TOEIC simulation test, after held the activity showed the teachers’ listening skills got 395 score with a total of 72 correct answers and listening skills got 390 with a total of 80 correct answers.

Abstract

English educators in all levels of education  in Indonesia nowadays strive through to make their college students master in speaking and writing English. One of the ways to succeed the students are by asking them  use English or Indonesian-English code-mixing in their classroom include in online learning class. This study aims at finding out the types of Indonesian-English code mixing in online learning class.  A descriptive qualitative method was used to perform this study. The data for this study employed the students’ chats in Google Meet and Whatsapp as platforms of online class. The subjects were English Education Department students of Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia in three online class. The   instrument   utilized was documentation. This study was conducted entirely online.  Therefore, the data were collected by screenshots of the chat then were categorized as code mixing and the types of code mixing. Content analysis was applied for analyzing the data.  The findings indicates that most of students used code mixing with types of word insertion with 52.4 %  continued by phrase insertion. The lowest percentage was types of idiom  insertion with 2.5%. Hence, the lecturer know what should be improved  for  the students. It is necessary to get used  to the students to use English idiom in order to improve their language skill.

Abstract

English conversation still considered one of the skills that are difficult for students to do. Many students face difficulties when they want to communicate in English, even though students have been studying English for many years. Students often face some of the problems include the first. Students are not able to communicate with English because they do not master English vocabulary. Second, students are afraid and lacking confidence in the ability to say English vocabulary, and thirdly, there are no attractive media and learning methods to involve students communicating in English. Therefore, effective solutions are needed to motivate students to communicate in English. One solution to encourage students to interact with English is to provide new media and active learning methods. Therefore, the purpose of this community service is to improve the English conversation skills of Wirakarya Mandiri vocational students through film using dubbing and subtitling methods. The method used in the implementation of activities is lectures, discussions, and training in English conversation through film media applying subtitling and dubbing methods. The results of the event showed that there was an increase in students' knowledge and conversation skills with media through film applying dubbing and subtitling methods.

Abstract

In reality graffiti writings sometimes create some problems to the beauty of the environment. One of the problems are the creation of graffiti writings by Me&an art community on the streetwalls that affect the cleanliness of urban. Therefore, it is needed for a media as a place for the Me&an art community to express their creativity. The objective of this study is to give solution for the problem by providing a development media of graffiti writings for Me&an art community to become creative entrepreneur based on local wisdom of Malay Deli. This study focuses on developing graffiti writings by using and applying local wisdom values of Malay Deli. The results of this study are the sourvenirs model and the development place of graffiti writing as a media to express creativity based on local wisdom of Malay Deli. Briefly, the model of graffiti writing based on Malay Deli as a development media for Me&an art community to become creative industry entrepreneurs based the local wisdom.

Abstract

This article aims to revitalize the phylosophy of Malay motif ornament in the design of woven gedebong. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with ethnographic approach. The data were collected through observation, interview and documentation. There were four motifs used to revitalize and develop philosophical of Malay culture in the design of woven gedebong, they were flora, fauna, natural and wajik motifs. Firstly, flora motifs ornaments are from lined up flower (bunga berjajar), reap flower (bunga tampuk manggis), single florets (kuntum bujang), gundur florets, cloudy florets (kuntum awan larat), eartquake motion flower (bunga gerak gempa) on the handicraft of pencil case, cake box, skewer, kleenex box. Secondly, fauna motifs ornaments are from dragon (naga-nagaan) ant (semut beriring), twinned pigeon (merpati sekawan), return home duckling (itik pulang petang) on the handicrafts of sandal, kleenex box, and hat. Thirdly, outer space buih selari on the handicraft of astray. And lastly, Wajik motif are from portion form wajik (wajik petak tabur) and similar title of princess wajik (wajik payung sekaki tajuk puteri) on the handicraft of bag and stationery box. The philosophical local wisdom values of Malay ornaments are the values of good behaviours, taqwa (faith) to Allah, harmony, wisdom, heroic, affection, fertility, self-knowing, fair, responsibility. The result showed that there are some Malay motif ornaments used to develop in the woven gedebong that can be useful to revitalize the Malay philosophical of local wisdom values.

Abstract

Sertifikat tes Toefl saat ini sangat diperlukan bagi siswa sebagai syarat administratif untuk melanjutkan studi di perguruan tinggi baik dalam ajang beasiswa luar negeri maupun dalam negeri. Dalam hal ini siswa dituntut mampu memiliki pengetahuan dan sekaligus kemampuan untuk bisa sukses mengikuti tes berbahasa Inggris ini. Padahal, kenyataannya masih banyak siswa yang belum mengetahui mengenai tes berbahasa Inggris ini. Salah satu contohnya adalah siswa SMA Swasta Nurul Hasanah, Deli Serdang yang bahkan masih belum mengetahui skills ataupun keahlian serta soal yang biasanya diujikan dalam tes Toefl ini. Untuk itu, diperlukan solusi alternatif guna meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman sekaligus kemampuan dan penguasaan siswa SMA Swasta Nurul Hasanah terhadap materi tes Toefl. Dengan demikian tujuan Pelaksanaan Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini adalah memberikan solusi bagi siswa SMA Swasta Nurul Hasanah untuk mempersiapkan diri dalam mengikuti tes Toefl dengan menyediakan media pengajaran berbasis handout berupa tips dan trik jitu menjawab soal Toefl dan metode pengajaran yang efektif melalui metode cara cepat atau teknik jitu menjawab soal-soal Toefl secara mudah, sehingga hal ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman siswa SMA Swasta Nurul Hasanah, Deli Serdang mengenai tes berbahasa Inggris Toefl dan cara mudah menjawab soal-soal tes Toefl yang secara otomatis juga meningkatkan skor Toefl siswa SMA Swasta Nurul Hasanah, Deli Serdang. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan siswa terhadap tes berbahasa Inggris Toefl dan kemampuan siswa dalam menjawab soal-soal tes Toefl secara mudah dengan menerapkan trik jitu menjawab soal-soal Toefl.

Abstract

Kemampuan memahami teks bacaan dapat memudahkan siswa menguasai materi teks yang diajarkan. Namun, kenyataanya, siswa belum merespon dengan baik kegiatan membaca dengan pemahaman ini. Hal ini disebabkan kurangnya peranan guru dalam memberikan media yang efektif dan metode yang efisien dalam membantu siswa memahami teks bacaan. Padahal membaca dengan pemahaman merupakan faktor penting menentukan penguasaan siswa terhadap materi teks yang diajarkan. Sebagai solusi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman siswa adalah dengan menggunakan metode membaca petunjuk konteks (context clues). Metode ini dapat digunakan untuk memudahkan siswa memahami teks bacaan menerapkan beberapa tahapan metode berupa sinonim, antonim, example and explanation. Oleh karena itu, tujuan dari kegiatan pengadian ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman siswa SMA Harapan 3 Delitua menggunakan metode context clues. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan adalah ceramah, diskusi, dan pelatihan pemahaman teks bacaan bahasa Inggris menerapkan context clues. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan pemahaman siswa terhadap teks bacaan berbahasa Inggris menerapkan context clues.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of lexical inferencing strategies on students’ reading comprehension. This study was aimed was to find out whether the use of lexical inferencing strategies had effect on students’ reading comprehension. The population of this study was 90 Informatics Engineering students of Potensi Utama University in the fifth semester of 2014-2015 academic year. A placement test was given to 90 students to select 60 similar English proficiency level students. The instruments used for collecting data were written test and spoken test. These tests were conducted to identify students’ reading comprehension performance toward lexical inferencing strategies. These data were analysed by applying an experimental research design involving pre-test and post-test which were administered for control and experimental groups. The control group was taught by using conventional method, while the experimental group was treated by using lexical inferencing strategies. The results of the test showed that the use of the lexical inferencing strategies had significantly affected to students’ reading comprehension performance. Hence, it was concluded that lexical inferencing strategies was recommended to improve the students’ reading comprehension performance.
