Direct Teacher Corrective Feedback in EFL Writing Class at Higher Education: What Students Perceive Sabarun Sabarun

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the students’ perception of direct teacher corrective feedback in a foreign language writing class. It is descriptive quantitative research, employing questionnaires and observation as research instruments, which was conducted with 20 students of the fourth semester English department students of Palangka Raya State Islamic Institute of 2018/ 2019 academic year. The findings revealed that, firstly, in terms of the perception of students’ attitudes toward direct teacher corrective feedback, 75 percent of participants felt that they agreed to receive direct teacher corrective feedback on language form, content, and organization. Their preference for the area of corrective feedback in language forms was 85 percent while the organization was 65 percent. Secondly, dealing with the students’ perception on direct teacher feedback, 90 percent of students argued that they felt satisfied when they got direct teacher feedback. 85 percent of students perceived that their teacher’s feedback helped them improve their writing, and 90 percent of them realized that their teacher’s feedback made them feel confident in producing a better draft. Finally, most students responded that they appreciated the teacher’s feedback. In addition, the students believed that direct teacher feedback improved writing especially on grammar accuracy and organization.

Abstract

This study attempted to find out how students view the use of code switching and code mixing when learning in public speaking course. Code switching is the switching of two languages from one language to another or language variations in one conversation across sentence or clause boundaries. While code mixing is one language to another in the same speech or in the same spoken or written text. This study used 15 class A students of 2020 and a lecturer who taught public speaking courses in that class. This research used a case study method, while the instruments used were observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study were (1) code switching and code mixing was very influential in learning especially public speaking. These codes were very helpful in understanding English fully, so that there was no misunderstanding in receiving material from the lecturer, and so that the learning process can run well and the learning materials can be accepted by students perfectly. (2) Several factors caused code switching and code mixing to be carried out in public speaking class, the factors were: (a) Avoid misunderstanding when delivering material. (b) To make sure the student understood what he talked about. (c) To make the learning process be easier, make students able to receive learning materials well. (3) Based on observation, interview, and data documentation, the finding revealed that code switching and code mixing happened when was absent and during learning, the types used by lecturer only code switching, they called as intra sentential, inter sentential, and emblematic. Keywords:  Code Switching, Code Mixing, Public Speaking

Abstract

The study attempted to develop a syllabus and instructional materials that appropriate for the teaching of Essay Writing course Using Graphic Organizers. The Research and Development (R&D) procedure was employed in this study. The model used for designing the syllabus and developing instructional materials followed Yalden’s model known as Language Program Development with modification. The subjects of the study were the 48 students, the coordinator of English Study Program at IAIN Palangka Raya, and Essay Writing lecturer. The final product of this study is the instructional materials for nine meetings covering introduction to the essay (unit 1 meetings 1-4), illustration essay (unit 2 meeting 5), classification essay (unit 3 meeting 6), process essay (unit 4 meeting 7), comparison contrast essay (unit 5 meeting 8), and cause and effect (unit 6 meeting 9). Each unit consisted of learning objective, topic, sub-topic, description, relevancy, and keywords. The instructional material has been empirically tested in try-out stage. Based on the statistical calculation, it was shown that using proposed instructional materials gave facilitative effect on the students’ essay writing performance. Here, the t value of 8.639 was greater than t theoretic at the 5% (1.648) and 1% (2.423) of significant level.

Abstract

This research was meant to describe students' descriptive writing abilities. The sample of this research were 25 second semester students of English education study program of IAIN Palangka Raya who were chosen using random sampling technique. This research is descriptive research. Then, a descriptive text writing test was used to measure the students' ability in writing descriptive text. Vocabulary, mechanics, and organization are the three key areas on which students' abilities to write descriptive writings are being concentrated. While the final ability of students in writing descriptive texts is categorized into five levels; very good, good, average, fair, bad. The findings revealed that the students generally had a score of 66 for writing descriptive text, which was considered to be good. Meanwhile, three components that researcher focused on in writing descriptive text; Student's vocabulary score is 77 categorized in good level, Student's mechanics score is 63 categorized in good level, and students' organization score is 63 categorized or in good level.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the relation between mimetic and expressive analysis on “BE: LIFE GOES ON” by Bangtan Sonyeondan and the educational implication of these analyses on “BE: LIFE GOES ON” by Bangtan Sonyeondan. The researcher used qualitative research.  The researcher used the mimetic and expressive approach in the study.  The data collection method was library research in which researchers collected data sources from books, journals, and other supporting sources related to the topic of this research. Therefore, the data of this study appears in the form of words, phrases, and sentences contained in the song lyrics on the album BE: Life Goes on. The researcher found there were meaning and educational values in several poems included in the six songs that had been analyzed. These values are the educational character values promoted by the government to develop virtuous character in the students. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara analisis ekspresif mimetik a nd pada "BE: LIFE GOES ON" oleh Bangtan Sonyeondan  dan  implikasi pendidikan dari analisis th ese pada "BE: LIFE GOES ON" oleh Bangtan Sonyeondan. Penelitimenggunakan penelitian kualitatif.  Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan mimetik dan ekspresif dalam penelitian ini. Metode pengumpulan data adalah penelitian kepustakaan dimana peneliti mengumpulkan sumber data dari buku, jurnal, dan sumber pendukung lainnya yang berkaitan dengan topik penelitian ini. Oleh karena itu, data penelitian ini muncul dalam bentuk kata, frasa, dan kalimat yang terdapat dalam lirik lagu pada album BE: Life Goes on. Peneliti menemukan ada makna dan nilai-nilai pendidikan dalam beberapa puisi yang termasuk dalam enam lagu yang telah dianalisis. Nilai-nilai tersebut merupakan nilai-nilai karakter pendidikan yang diusung oleh pemerintah untuk menumbuhkan karakter berbudi luhur pada peserta didik.

Abstract

The background of this study is the influence of storytelling method to the development of students' speaking and vocabulary and students' perspectives related to the process of how they understand the storytelling material conveyed by the teacher. The objectives of the study are (1) To find out students' perceptions of the storytelling method in English class. (2) What benefits do the obtain after storytelling method applied? This study used qualitative research. Qualitative research is used in the literature as a data analysis and can also obtain results that can be adjusted based on the environment. Qualitative research can also use people as a source of research, therefore qualitative is chosen as material to assist the research being carried out by researchers. This study also used field surveys as a basic research instrument of a research that is being processed to obtain satisfactory results. The findings of this study (1) most students agree that storytelling learning is able to make students improve the quality of students' pronunciation, to be better. students view that storytelling is effective because it uses acceptable and well-implemented methods that make students feel entertained. (2) There are several ways for students to improve their pronunciation, by practicing before the lesson starts and coming to the front of the class to tell their friends. (3) Students also feel that learning storytelling is effective in adding more vocabulary, and also understand more about English.

Abstract

Setelah mempembelajaran dirumah yang memakan waktu cukup lama, akhirnya pemerintah kembali menghadirkan sekolah tatap muka, namun hal itu justru menjadi tantangan baru lagi untuk guru-guru di SMPN 1 Jabiren Raya, para guru  banyak mengeluh karena banyak siswa yang mengalami kesulitan membaca, sehingga pembelajaran terganggu. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian adalah PALS (participatory action learning system), dengan pelaksanaan (1) mengidentifikasi masalah siswa; (2) melakukan analisis kebutuhan untuk mengatasi masalah pembelajaran, merencanakan bimbingan dan pendampingan siswa, (4) melakukan pendampingan terstruktur dengan kelas tambahan, dan (5) kegiatan pemantauan dan evaluasi. (6) pelaporan dan penelusuran keberhasilan program. Berdasarkan hal itu kegiatan bimbingan membaca untuk siswa SMPN 1 Jabiren Raya dikata kan berhasil dan bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca, dari data 17 siswa sudah 14 siswa lancar membaca 3 siswa masih kurang lancar membaca, dapat disimpulkan tim pengabdian berhasil meminimalisir kesulitan membaca sehingga pembelajaran didalam kelas menjadi kondusif, siswa bisa memahami tulisan serta menjawab soal yang telah diberikan oleh guru.

Abstract

Languages assesment is the process of determining an individual's degree of language ability by use of standardized tests and observations. It is a crucial component of English teaching and learning since it enables teachers and students to receive insightful feedback while also tracking the student's development over time. There are various kinds of language assessment which can be assist educators in adapting their instructional approaches to meet the needs of learners effectively. The objective of this research is to an overview language assessment and to find kinds of assessment. The method of this research used library research. Object of this research are books, journal and article. Based on the research data, language assessment is an essential component of both teaching and learning English, and kinds of language assessment consist of (1)informal and formal assessment, (2)formative and summative assessment, (3)perfomanace-based assessment, (4)achievement assessment, (5)diagnostic assessment, (6)placement assessment, (7)profiency assessment, and (8)aptitude assessment.

Abstract

The study's aims are to examine the improvement of process text writing ability with Make-a-Match technique and to discover the benefits and drawbacks of using Make-a-Match technique in increasing procedure text writing ability at SMPN Satu Atap 1 Jabiren Raya's Ninth Grade. Twenty students participated in the study. The study's instruments included interview questions, an observation list, a pre-test, and two post-tests. This was an action research study. The study was completed in two rounds. There were four steps in each cycle: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The findings demonstrated that students' learning outcomes increased after using the Make-a-Match type cooperative learning approach. The average score in the first cycle test was 54.55, with a post-test score of 70.95, and an average score of 84.45 in the second cycle. In cycle I, 35% of students met the target, while in cycle II, 90% of post-test I and II findings showed an improvement in student learning outcomes.
