Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini memberikan penyuluhan sosialisasi cerdas dan bijak menggunakan media sosial di era digital kepada siswa kelas IX SMPN 7 Muaro Jambi. Kegiatan ini dilatarbelakangi oleh fenomena penting yang muncul dalam kehidupan masyarakat sejak tahun 2000an, yaitu adanya jejaring media sosial seperti Friendster, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp, dan banyak lagi lainnya. Tidak dipungkiri adanya jejaring tersebut telah memberikan berbagai fasilitas kemudahan kepada penggunanya, misalnya dalam berkomunikasi, menyebarkan dan mendapatkan akses informasi. Seiring dengan banyaknya manfaat positif yang didapat, dampak negatif dari maraknya media sosial pun dirasakan nyata. Didasari oleh fenomena ini, maka tim pengabdian ini memberikan penyuluhan sosialisasi bagaimana menggunakan media sosial secara cerdas dan bijak sehingga tidak terpapar oleh pengaruh negatifnya. Sehingga diharapkan kedepannya, siswa-siswa ini akan menjadi individu-individu yang bertanggung jawab dalam menggunakan media sosial.

Abstract

Pandemi covid-19 telah mengubah proses pembelajaran baik pada sisi belajar siswa ataupun sisi mengajar guru. Hal ini dikarenakan mayoritas belajar dilakukan dengan moda online atau dalam jaringan (daring). Siswa dituntut agar lebih bertanggung jawab pada proses belajarnya karena ketiadaan guru disamping mereka walau mereka tetap diberi penjelasan dan tugas secara daring agar tetap termonitor proses belajarnya. Guru dituntut agar menguasai pendekatan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan perubahan yang terjadi, satu diantaranya adalah pendekatan pembelajaran self-directed learning. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PPM) FKIP Universitas Jambi telah dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk memberi pelatihan dan pemahaman mengenai pendekatan belajar Self-Directed Learning (SDL) kepada guru SMPN 1 Merangin. Dengan teknik penjelasan, pemberian contoh dan modelling, dan diakhiri dengan sesi tanya jawab, kegiatan pelatihan ini telah terlaksana dengan baik. Tindak lanjut dan refleksi dari peserta juga telah didapatkan melalui angket yang disebar melalui google form. Secara umum guru-guru peserta pelatihan telah mengerti konsep dasar dan karakteristik SDL. Dengan pemahaman tersebut mereka diharapkan bisa memaksimalkan potensi penerapan SDL dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar nantinya.

Abstract

In a time when technology is growing and changing rapidly, reading abilities remain central to students academic development. The purpose of this study is to describe the point of view of English Reading Teachers at Jambi University about EFL students reading skills in digital era based on their experience in teaching reading. The point of views covered three main topics: the reading learning outcomes, the reading learning activities, and the reading learning resources. Focus group discussion with ten reading teachers of Jambi University was used to get the data. The teachers said that the reading skills of the students are not sufficient to help them in touch with the digital era although they have digital gadget at hands. Some of the students are reluctant to read and they are lack of reading strategies, literally and critically. Effective instruction and consistent reading practice and use over long periods of time is required in order to develop the EFL students reading skills.

Abstract

Writing scientific article is one of the ways to develop teacher professionalism. However, writing scientific article remains a problem for some Islamic High School Teachers. To explore about the problem, a preliminary research was conducted. Focus Group Discussion was used to gather the data. The result showed that most of the Islamic High School teachers who became the participants of the research never publish a scientific article because they get difficulties not only in exploring the ideas but also in writing the article itself. The teachers admitted that writing scientifically is not their habit. Thus, encouraging those teachers to write scientifically is highly necessary and supportive atmosphere among teachers should be developed. It takes time to develop a belief that writing and publishing scientific article would help the participant teachers developing their professionalism.

Abstract

Stating a purpose for reading may help shaping the way the students read. It could save time and improve understanding. This qualitative study explored the university students’ purpose for reading book. The participants were a class of law faculty students learning English as a general purpose in a state university in Jambi. The main source of data was the document in the form of students’ reading report. The document was analyzed using qualitative approach. To clarify the data gained, semi-structured interview was applied. It is revealed that students’ purposes for reading book was for content and they use low order thinking verb such as to know to realize it. For more comprehensive book reading, it is suggested that the students use different verbs such as to interpret, to classify, or to explore for stating their purposes.

Abstract

Students perception on selected textbook they use can be a meaningful information in helping them achieve their learning goal and generally in helping the teacher in designing the course. This paper was aimed at describing EFL students’ perception on a selected textbook entitled Second Language Acquisition: An Introduction written by Muriel Saville-Troike published in 2012. The participants of this descriptive study were 40 EFL students enrolled in Second Language Acquisition course in academic year 2019/2020 in a public university in Jambi, Indonesia. The data were gathered through questionnaire response and WhatsApp discussion. It was revealed that majority of the students perceive that the book is informative, useful, and needed but difficult to understand. The students suggested to develop additional simple material to the book which consist of brief explanation and example, easy to understand words, and have interesting and eye-catching design. This information could be used to design and develop additional course material.
