Abstract

This research explains about the role of WTO in settling the trade dispute between Brazil and Indonesia on the issue of chiken imports. Indonesia has been known to be the world’s 10th largest chicken meat consumer in 2015. Brazil, in this case, sued Indonesia to the WTO because Indonesia’s policies of requiring halal labeling and other non-tariff regulations regarding chicken imports were considered as violations to WTO regulation regarding non – tariff barrier.            This research is a qualitative research that uses the descriptive explanative method. The perspective used in this research is the neoliberal institutionalism,  which argues that states created international instistutions to further cooperation and to assist them in solving their problems. The data for this research have been collected from books, articles, journals, documents (published by the governments and WTO), and websites.             This research shows that Brazil and Indonesia have settled their dispute through the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) and followed by a bilateral negotiation outside the DSB of WTO. For the WTO’s DSB dispute resolution mechanism Indonesia have been stated to be guilty in the panel and have not submitted an  appeal regarding this case. And for the bilateral negotiation outside DSB WTO Indonesia have agreed to renegotiate trade relations with Brasil. Keywords: trade dispute resolution, WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB), non-tariff barier

The author collects data from books, academic journals, official websites, articles and also official documents related to this research, then uses document analysis as a research method. The issue of this study is to analyze Singapore’s reason which has ratified ICERD in 2017 using theory the cost of commitment from Oona Hathaway, and the level of analysis is state. The result of the study shows that civil society groups played a very large role in the government’s decision to ratify ICERD in 2017. One of the civil society group coalition, COSINGO, succeeded in submitting their reports to UPR through the UPR Pre-Session and recommended Singapore to ratify ICERD as soon as possible. Many actions were taken by civil society groups which indirectly influenced the government to ratify ICERD in 2017. Keywords: ICERD, Civil Society Groups, Racial Discrimination, Ratification.

Abstract

Australia is one of the popular destinations for refugees and asylum seekers compared to countries in Europe. The increase in the number of refugees and voters to Australia saw a significant increase in the year resulting in Australia under the government of Prime Minister (PM) Tony Abbot, issuing the Operation Sovereign Borders policy. This policy has come under fire from the international community and has a profound effect on Australia and countries that have direct contact with refugees and asylum seekers. This research uses securitization theory with a level of state analysis. Securitization is a theory developed by thinkers from the Copenhagen School including Barry Buzan, Ole Weaver and Jaap de Wilde. According to the Copenhagen School, the Securitization Process has two stages, including the stage of raising issues and the stage of convincing the audience. The qualitative method in this study uses secondary data studied with document analysis techniques. This research shows that the OSB policy during PM Abbott's reign can indeed be said to have succeeded in reducing the arrival of boat people. But on the other hand, the implementation of such policies has the potential to violate human rights through non-observance of the principle of non-refoulement. In reality, asylum-seeking boats that came to Australia during PM Abbott's reign have been blocked and returned to their home territories. Their return to the region of origin is a violation of the principle of non-refoulement that has been recognized as customary international law. Australia is a popular destination for refugees and asylum seekers compared to countries in Europe, as the European region has adopted stricter refugee policies. Keywords: Australia, Asylum Seekers, Operation Sovereign Borders Policy, Schengen Convention, Dublin Convention.

Abstract

The following study describes Colombia's nation branding practice that was implemented during Juan Manuel Santos' administration in 2010-2018. Colombia itself is a country located in South America that is often associated with a rather negative image and perception due to three critical issues that happened within the country: drug trafficking, insecurity and corruption. In order to create a positive image of its country, Colombia later implemented its own nation branding strategy through the "La Respuesta es Colombia" campaign. Researcher used constructivism as a perspective and the theory of nation branding strategy that was proposed by Keith Dinnie in this following study. The theory itself explains the strategies that are commonly used by a country in their nation branding campaign. Data were gathered using a qualitative research approach and document analysis method. Through those approaches, researcher gathered data that were found in books, academic publications, public documents and digital archives related to the issues that are being researched. This study shows that Colombia practiced its nation branding by releasing an advertisement that was aired in a few foreign television stations, digital and social media usage, appointing nation brand ambassadors and weaving a cooperation between stakeholders and local businesses. This nation branding campaign helps promote Colombia internationally through creating a positive, comprehensive and competitive image of the country in issues like cultures, environments, exports, tourism and investments. Keywords: Nation Branding, Nation Branding Strategy, Image, Perception, Colombia, La Respuesta es Colombia.

Abstract

This research analysed New Zealand’s responses towards China’s geopolitical approach in Oceania particularly in the year of 2014 until 2019. China, who is intensifying its approach to countries in Oceania, is creating political problems for New Zealand. These political problems consist of the disruption of New Zealand’s interests. As a small country, New Zealand has its own strategy in response to China’s approach. New Zealand employs its hedging strategy in the spectrum of economic pragmatism where New Zealand seeks to meet its interests without causing significant damage. This research is conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method with document analysis as its data collecting method. Document analysis is done by evaluating documents such as books, journals, press releases, news, and government publications. This research used the Neorealism perspective and hedging theory. This theory explains countries’ response of hedging toward political problems. This paper showed that, in accordance with the hedging theory, New Zealand's response to its political problem towards China is by maximizing its economic benefits using economic pragmatism strategy. This strategy can be seen from some of New Zealand’s actions such as Joint Statement between New Zealand and the People’s Republic of China on the Establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signing of Belt and Road Initiative’s MoA, and renewal of FTA between China and New Zealand. New Zealand’s actions show its intentions towards continuing its economic relation with China in the future. Therefore, it can be seen that with regard to its political problems with China, New Zealand chooses to defend its economic interests. Keywords: Hedging, Economic Pragmatism, China’s Geopolitical Approach, New Zealand’s Interest.
