Abstract

Background: Skipping exercise is a kind of physical exercise which is inexpensive and easy to do. Skipping is one of many kinds of aerobic physical exercise. Aerobic physical exercise have been known from its function in improving cognitive function including attention in human brain. However there haven’t been any research which discusses about the difference of attention level before and after skipping exercise in Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University. Aim: To find out a difference of attention level before and after skipping exercise. Methods: This study conducted in quasi experimental pre-test and post-test nonequivalent group method. This study was conducted in May until July 2019. The subjects were 46 male students of Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University, divided in 2 groups. Experimental group was instructed to do 6 weeks of skipping exercise (3 times in a week) and control group was instructed to not do any exercise. Attention level was measured with software Attention Network Test a day before skipping exercise started and a day after skipping exercise ended. Significance was analyzed by Paired T Test/Wilcoxon and Independent T Test/Mann-Whitney. Results: There were no significant difference of alerting and orienting score before and after skipping exercise in both experimental and control group. Meanwhile, there was significant difference of executive control score (p=0,001) that could be seen from its first mean score 94,296 and then the score declined to be 65,130 in the second test. It indicated an increasing executive control function. Conclusion: Six weeks of skipping exercise increases executive control function of attention.Key Words: Skipping exercise, attention level, alerting, orienting, executive control

Abstract

Background: Short-term memory affects academic performance. Good memory function is one of the benefits of physical exercise. A sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity lead people to do less exercise. Climbing up and downstairs is one form of practical physical exercise that can be easily done anywhere at any time and by anyone. Aim: To assess the effect of climbing up and down stairs exercise on short-term memory in young adults. Method: This research used Quasi-Experimental with pre-test and post-test non-equivalent group method. Subjects were medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (n=40) aged 18-22 years that meet the inclusion criteria. Subjects were divided into 2 groups, control group (CG) and exercise group (EG), each consisting of 20 people. The subject's short-term memory was assessed using the Scenery Picture Memory Test (SPMT). Statistical analysis with Shapiro-Wilk test, paired T-test, Wilcoxon, independent T-test, and Mann-Whitney. Result: There were significant improvements in short-term memory before and after climbing up and down stairs exercise on both exercise group (p=0.000) and control group (p=0.001). No difference in pre-test scores between groups (p=0.921), and a significant difference in post-test scores between groups (p=0.010). An Independent T-test was done on the delta of the pre-post test between groups and is significant (p=0.016). Conclusion: 6 weeks of climbing up and down stairs exercise improves short-term memory in young adults. A higher improvement was found in the exercise group.

Abstract

Abstract

Background : The many tasks that put upon the medical students require them to have a good sleep quality. Medical students generally have poor sleep quality. One way to improve sleep quality is to perform effective aerobic physical activities such as skipping. Aim : To explore the difference in sleep quality before and after skipping exercise in Medical Student of Diponegoro University. Methods : This study was a quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test non-equivalent group. The samples were students of Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (n = 48) aged 18-22 years who met the inclusion criteria. The sample was divided into 2 groups: control and treatment groups, each consisting of 24 students. Sleep quality score was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The normality test was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Hypothesis testing of sleep quality score before and after skipping exercise in the control group was performed using the Wilcoxon test, while in the treatment group using the paired t-test. The difference in sleep quality score between control and treatment groups was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results : The pre-test PSQI score in the control group is 6.88 ± 1.872 while in the treatment group is 7.63 ± 1.996. The results of the statistical test showed that the difference is not significant (p>0.05). The post-test PSQI score in the control group was 7.92 ± 2.888 while in the treatment group was 4.58 ± 1.886. The results of the statistical test showed that the difference is significant (p<0.05). In the control group, there is a slight increase in PSQI score which is not significant (p>0.05), while in the treatment group there is a significant decrease in PSQI score (p<0.05). Conclusion : There is a significant difference in the sleep quality score between control and treatment groups; the sleep quality of the treatment group is better than the control group.Key Words : Sleep quality, Skipping exercise, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
