Abstract

Critical thinking (CT) is crucial for the aspect in English language education, yet little attention has been given to language teacher’s perception an experience regarding CT during the pre-service of their teaching career. The data of the present study were gained from the focus group discussion and interview which covered the participants’ understanding of CT and its use in the teaching and learning process. The study indicates that the participants had limited understanding of CT, they need more support to be able to apply CT properly in their teaching process, and they also faced contextual challenges when integrating CT into their teaching. The study suggests that critical mindset should be cultivated among the student-teachers, so that they can develop proper CT-oriented pedagogies.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the phenomena of vocabulary strategies used by gamers of the Harvest Moon game. A survey study was conducted to see the most and the least frequent strategies used by the gamers while playing the game. To gain the data, the researcher distributed a questionnare which is adapted from the Schmitt’s taxonomy of VLS namely determination, social (discovery), social (consolidation), cognitive, memory, and metacognitive strategies. The result of the present study shows that the most frequent strategy used is cognitive strategy, the mean is 2.28 which indicates that most of the gamers use this strategy to improve their vocabulary learning. Meanwhile, the least strategy used is the social startegy since the mean score is 1.07 which suggests that the gamers do not really seek help from friends when they have problems with vocabulary. Taking the result of the study into the learning of vocabulary, it is suggested that teachers provide language learners with the cognitive strategy to accomodate their vocabulary learning, so that they can enhance their vocabulary.

Abstract

This study explored the use of direct corrective feedback in the Thesis Proposal writing course where the students are expected to develop their undergraduate thesis proposal at Universitas Brawijaya and how direct corrective feedback can help the students to deal with their academic writing. The data were obtained from six students who have taken the Thesis Proposal Writing course and one lecturer who taught the course using two instruments: an interview guide and observation checklists to triangulate and ensure the validity. The result showed that: (1) direct corrective feedback was employed by the teachers to help the students to deal with their writing because direct corrective feedback was the most suitable and comprehensive feedback  (2) the lecturer provided direct corrective feedback through Google Classroom and Google Documents for asynchronous meeting and Google Meet for synchronous meeting (3) Direct corrective feedback helped the students to deal with their writing since the students had high positive attitude and is preferred by the students  to revise their drafts. In teaching writing, the result implied that it will be very beneficial for the teacher to provide direct corrective feedback to the students as teaching strategies and the students to correct their drafts easily.
