Abstract

This study aims, namely (1) describes the ability to write essay description of the class VII SMP Negeri 18 Lau through the use of media image series and (2) to analyze the obstacles faced by students of class VII SMP Negeri 18 Lau in arranging a bouquet of descriptions using the media picture series.This research is a qualitative research. This research data in the form of bouquets description seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Lau. Data collection methods are methods refer to Technical note. Data were analyzed with descriptive methods.The results showed that the analysis of the ability to write essay description of the class VII SMP Negeri 18 Lau through the use of media image series shows (1) the ability to organize ideas in an integrated manner, (2) choice of words / diction precise, (3) the use of vocabulary in varied, (4) the creation of cohesion and coherence and (5) writing techniques in accordance with Indonesian enhanced spelling (EYD). The constraints in the use of media such images in learning, from the point of view of teachers that (a) some teachers still use traditional learning methods, (b) the limited ability of teachers to provide media images in accordance with the concept of learning and (c) the teacher has not been able to use media image series of continuous learning. As from the student's perspective (a) The student has not mastered the rules of spelling properly, (b) students are less serious about work and (c) the influence of the local language diversity.

Abstract

The reason for conducting this research was based on consideration that university students majoring in English should be at the level where their English is good. Unfortunately, students still made grammatical deviations in both spoken and written form. In this study, 30 students of STKIP Muhammadiyah Bulukumba University enrolled which were taken by random sampling method. This research is aimed to provide useful information particularly as reference for English teachers, lecturers and curriculum developers about grammatical deviations that affects the quality of students’ writing composition to minimize it. This research applied the qualitative research to analyze the data. The conclusion of the result shows that the students still have problems in making English sentences. They still make grammatical deviations in their composition. They were also not being able to construct words into sentences and arranged sentences into neat arrangements and coherent paragraphs.Further, syntactical area is the most frequent area where the students committed grammatical deviation. It is proven by the findings thatsyntax is considered to be more difficult than morphology. It appears that the students’ errors distribute to all students’ writings. They still make grammatical deviation, but the students do not always make grammatical deviations in the samesubcomponent.In terms of difficulties, the students admitted in interview that there are 3 main causeswhy the students tend to commit grammatical deviation in writing. Those are lack of practice of the target language, lack of source or books that they need, and the last is lack of grammar understanding.

Abstract

Local wisdom-based reading text as the authentic teaching material overcomes various obstacles of reading comprehension in EFL which activate the students’ schemata. This research is about utilization of the local wisdom-based reading text to improve students’ reading comprehension. The types of comprehension include identifying main idea, understanding unfamiliar words, identifying text details, and being able to find reference within the text, being able to make inference regarding the text. The research design was pre-experimental study using a sample of 27 students in the second grade of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Baubau. A pre-test was administrated before intervention and after the same test for the post-test was administered to find out the students’ improvement on reading comprehension. The result confirmed that local wisdom-based reading text is an effective tools to empower EFL learners’ comprehension. The most prevalent improvement regards familiarity of the lexical items ability in making inference as well as finding out main idea. The students’ positive responses that were based on the perception confirmed that local wisdom-based reading text could be encouraged to come up with pedagogical implication applicable for the EFL classroom notably at the second grade of MAN 1 Baubau.

Abstract

This study is a corpus-based study that aims to find out the use of words in Gardner and Davies' (2014) Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) in Undergraduate Theses in the field of English Education. A 2.2 million-word called undergraduate theses corpus was created in this study. The corpus consists of 200 undergraduate theses compiled from 10 Universities in Indonesia. The result shows that AVL words account for 24.79% of the entire education undergraduate theses, which contained 557,658 running words. AVL contains 3,015 core academic words (lemmas). Based on word frequency criteria, this study found 573-word forms and 871 lemmas, which coverage 31.48% of the whole Gardner and Davies' AVL that occur at least 63 times in the entire corpus and the word has to occur at least five times in five universities. The finding shows that AVL is effective for the students in writing undergraduate theses. However some of the words that are closely related to the English Education field are not found in the AVL, therefore an attempt to develop a new academic vocabulary specific to the English Education field is needed.

Abstract

This research purposed to investigate some impacts of the Quizizz application in reading comprehension at Junior High School students and selected a quantitative approach by using quasi-experimental method. Nonrandomized experimental group and control group design were applied in this research. Some participants were the second grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tellu Siattinge. The instrument selected pre-test and post-test in experimental and control groups in the part of reading tests toward students. Then the result appeared the mean score of pre-test in the experimental group was 63.61, and the control group was 63.65. While the mean score of post-test in the experimental group was 82.84, and the post-test of the control group was 75.61. The independent sample t test analysis of post-test from both classes showed the value of significance (2-tailed) was 0.000, while the mean of Sig. (2-tailed) was lower than 0.05. This result showed that H1 was accepted, and H0 was rejected. The researcher inferred that there was an improvement to the ability of students for reading comprehension through Quizizz application.

Abstract

This study aims at revitalizing the role of the English language in education, where it becomes the house of the students for most time in their lives. When something wrong happens and goes on the paradigm conformation of this revitalization, shifting assumptions should become one of the efforts and be strived by one of the most element who takes main responsibility on education itself – teacher. this study explores empirically and theoretically the teachers' paradigm on the use of English language in the real classroom. The participants were the teachers from private schools in Sidenreng Rappang joining a workshop due to Study Day Teachers conducted by the foundations. The workshop results were reflected and interpreted by the involvement of a related-literature reviews from previously researchers and experts - journal articles and scientific books.

Abstract

The audio-lingual method (ALM) is a prominent pedagogical strategy for English language instruction, with a particular emphasis on fostering oral proficiency and enhancing lexical acquisition. The purpose of this study is to determine how the audio lingual method affects vocabulary development. The researcher employed a quantitative methodology to assess students' proficiency with the audio-Lingual Method (AML) in vocabulary learning. In addition, the researcher employed quantitative methods and calculations using by SPSS 16.0 version. The analysis shows that the implementation of audio linguistic method in vocabulary improvement influenced significantly the students' interest in learning English. The students expressed a desire for both innovative teaching materials and an efficient teaching approach in order to increase the level of engagement in their English lessons
