Abstract

Abstract: Writing is an important language skill that students should learn in school. Commonly, writing among students takes less attention in the process of its activities. They tend to take a long process and unorganized result. The aim of this descriptive research is to find out the ability of the third year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru in writing analytical expository texts. Beside that, this research also aimed to identify the most difficult and the easiest aspects of analitycal expository texts for the students. The participants of this research are 35 third year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. The data was collected by giving a written test to the students individually. The students were asked to write a good paragraph in term of analitycal expository text. Before doing the test, the students were given a model of analitycal expository texts to remember them about a good form of analytical expository texts. There were five aspects that being assessed in this test, they are grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, organization and fluency. The data were scored by three raters. In analyzing the data, the rater used analytical scoring system that assesses five aspects of writing. The research finding shows that the students have good ability in writing analitycal expository texts with the mean score of 69.5. The easiest aspect for the students in writing analytical expository text is mechanism, while the most difficult aspect is fluency.Keywords :Analytical Expository Texts, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstrack: The research is a classroom action research that was conducted based on the problem occurred at the first year of SMA Negeri 9 Pekanbaru, namely the students were lack of practice in writing descriptive text and this situation made them got poor score in test. Therefore, this research was aimed at studying the improvement on the ability of the first year students of SMA Negeri 9 Pekanbaru in writing descriptive by using Clustering technique. Besides, this research was also intended to identify which components of writing are mostly improved after being taught by using Clustering technique. The participants were 34 students from X2 class of SMA N 9 Pekanbaru. This research was conducted in 2 cycles. The data collection technique were obtained through (1) Writing test was done to measures students’ achievement, (2). Observation sheet was applied to know the students’ activities during teaching and learning process. The research findings can be briefly explained as follow:  First, the students’ writing ability could be improved by using Clustering technique. Before the research was done, the average score of the students’ listening was only 43.92. After giving the treatment in cycle 1, the score has been improved to 67.32. In cycle 2, it increased up to 78.01. Second, based on the students observation sheet, it showed that the students’ activeness during the treatments by using Clustering technique also improved. From the score of writing test and the students and teacher observation sheet showed that the used of Clustering technique made the teaching process more effective and it also helped students improved their writing ability.   Keyword: Clustering technique, Students’ Writing Ability, and Descriptive

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at investigating whether there is a correlation between between students’ participation in English Extracurricular at school and their speaking ability at SMPN 6 Pekanbaru. This research used simple random sampling. The researcher found that extracurricular activity can improve students’ speaking ability at school. The result showed that coefficient correlation between two variable is 0,84, which means there is positive correlation between two variables.
