Abstract

Canal wall preparation achieved by smoothness. Objective of this study to determine smoothness differences of nickel-titanium manual instruments compared with nickel-titanium rotary instruments in apical third region canal wall. This study was a quasi-experimental research conducted by in vitro method on 30 single rooted upper permanent incisive that have been extracted. They were randomly divided into two groups (n=15) and each group root canal teeth were cleaned and shaped with manual rotary nickel-titanium instruments. Roughness analyzed used with Mitutoyo roughness surface instruments. Every sample analyzed in third region canal wall. Data have been analyzed with a t-test. The result of the study showed that different smoothness for every sample after preparation by manual and rotary. In conclusion, from this study showed those instrumentations with rotary nickel titanium will give the best smoothness than manual nickel titanium instruments, so the result gets significantly.

Abstract

Introduction: DMF-T index is an important indicator to assess oral health status of the population. DMF-T index is a number that indicates the average total number of permanent teeth affected by caries, missing or should be extraction because of caries, or have been restorated on each tooth and not each surface. DMF-T index being a reference of the Performed Treatment Index (PTI) which is the sum percentage of restored teeth or without caries in the population. The purpose of this study is to determine DMF-T index and performed treatment index of the patient in Dental Conservation Installation.Methods: This research used the descriptive with survey techniques. Sampling was conducted with a total sampling. The DMF-T index and PTI of Patients in Dental Conservative Installation on July – September 2011. The data obtained through clinical examination of 561 respondents. Results: The DMF-T index patients in Dental Conservative Installation is 5.824 while the PTI is 1.51%. Conclusion: DMF-T index of patients in Dental Conservative Installation period July - September 2011 in the high category and PTI Patients In Dental Conservative Installation Oral and Dental Hospital Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran period July - September 2011 in the low category.

Abstract

Introduction: Nanofilled composite resins and resin hybrid composites are often used for the manufacture of composite indirect restorations because it has the addition of filler to add strength materials. This study aimed to compare the compressive strength of composites and composite hybrid nanofilled after post curing using light box. Methods: The research conducted was experimental research, with samples divided into two groups of each 10 specimens of hybrid composite resin and nanofilled. Composite cylindrical diameter of 3mm and 6mm high in post-curing for 180 seconds using a light box compressive strength test was then performed using a Lloyd Instruments LRX Plus, 1 mm/mnt speed. Results: The results were the average compressive strength of post-curing hybrid composites 234.61 MPa higher than the average post-curing composite nanofilled that was 196.60 MPa. Conclusion: the compressive strength of hybrid composite after post curing with light box is greater than the nanofilled composite.

Abstract

One of the objectives of successful endodontic treatment is the hermetic obturation of the root canal system. To achieve this, the root canal filling must seal the canal space both apically and coronally to prevent the ingress of microorganisms or tissue fluids into the canal space. Apical leakage is reported a common reason for the clinical failure of endodontic therapy. Leakage through an obturated root canal is expected to take place at interfaces between sealer and dentin or sealer and gutta-percha, or through voids within the sealer. Hence, the sealing quality of root canal filling depends much on the sealing ability of the sealer. Therefore, anything that may influence the adaptation of the root filling to the canal wall is can determine the degree and the extent of leakage, and ultimately the prognosis of the endodontic therapy. In endodontic therapy, the smear layer formation results from root canal preparation and may influence the effective seal of the root canal system. The smear layer formation is mainly composed of inorganic components (dentin debris) and organic materials, such as pulp tissue remnant, bacteria, and blood cells. Removal of the smear layer from the root canal walls before the obturation can reduce the leakage of root canal sealer. To remove the smear layer use 10 ml 17% EDTA followed by 10 ml of 5.25% NaOCl as irrigating solution. This paper discribe about how the effectivity of EDTA as irigating solution to remove the smear layer especially in the apical root canal with many lateral canal to reduce the apical leakage.

Abstract

Introduction: Calcium release from the enamel surface is known as enamel demineralisation. Enamel demineralisation is a chemical process of mineral loss from the email structure. One of the factors that cause demineralisation is the presence of acids derived from food or beverages consumed. This study was aimed to determine the effects of soft drinks and the amount of calcium release from the enamel surface. Methods: This study was an in-vitro experimental. The population was extracted maxillary premolars from orthodontics clinics in health centres, hospitals, and private clinics throughout Bandung and Jakarta. As many as 20 crown of maxillary premolars divided into two groups. Dissolved calcium was measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). Data obtained was tested using an independent t-test. Results: The results showed that the amount of calcium released after exposure of soft drink was higher than soda water. The average amount of calcium released after soft drink exposure was 4122 ppm and soda water was 3492 ppm. Conclusion: Soft drink affects the calcium release from the enamel surface.

Abstract

Cleaning and shaping of the root canal as the foundation for successful endodontic therapy. Cleaning of the root canal as the removal of all the contents of the root canal systems before and during shaping. Mechanical cleaning as the most important part of the root canal therapy. Instrumentation of the apical region has long been considered to be an essential component in the cleaning and shaping process. The apical area as the critical zone for instrumentation. The apical portion of the root canal system can retain microorganisms that could potentially cause periradicular inflammation. The nickel-titanium rotary instrumentation system to facilitate the cleaning and shaping process. Larger instrumentation sizes not only allow proper irrigation but also significantly decrease remaining bacteria in the canal system. How the larger apical sizes preparation must be achieved to clinical success. This paper will describe the major factors impacting the selection of final apical size, the factors are the anatomy of the apical constriction, root canal diameter, apical instrumentation, and bacteria in dentin tubuli.

Abstract

Introduction: Sugar-free chewing gum has the potential to provide oral health benefits including plaque control. This study benefit to develop and validate an occlusal site-specific plaque index. The index will be used to check the results of chewing sugar-free chewing gum. The purpose of this study is to analized the cleaning effect of sugar-free chewing gum on occlusal surfaces. Methods: The research is a split mouth design, single blind, cross over study. The research consists of 30 volunteers chosen by random sampling. Volunteers divided into two groups, each consisting of 15 volunteer’s. Group A, volunteers were asked to chewing gum on the left side regimen whereas volunteers in group B were asked to chew on the right side regimen for 5 minute period. After a minimum of 4 days washout period, the study was repeated with the volunteers’ crossing over to the alternative chewing right or chewing left regimen. Results:  The mean difference 0.224.Paired sample t-test was used to determine whether there are significant differences before and after chewing gum. With level of significance α=5 % the t-values for both groups are both 0.00.There are differences before and after chewing gum in group A and B. Conclusion: Sugar-free chewing gum have cleaning effect of on occlusal surfaces, sugar-free chewing gum decreases the plaque accumulation on occlusal surfaces.

Abstract

Bleaching is the tooth whitening by applying chemical materials oxidizing the organic tooth pigmentation and creating smaller and lighter molecules. Commonly used in the tooth bleaching is hydrogen peroxide. Strawberry and apple contain hydrogen peroxide and ellagic acid which will bond with an unsaturated bond of the tooth pigmentation. The purpose of this research was to finding out and measuring the tooth whitening level and effectivity between the strawberry and apple juice. The type of this research was a true experimental (in-vitro), using 30 samples of maxillary premolars with cutted radicular until the CEJ. Samples were divided into 3 groups (immersed in strawberry juice; apple juice; and mineral water); with three times daily immersion in one week. The tooth colour level was measured using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and LSD test. The results showed significant differences among all groups. Normality test showed the variance between homogenous groups, with the p-value of 0.198 (p ≥ 0.05). The one-way ANOVA test results showed a significance value (0.000), indicated a significant degree of the tooth whitening level between all groups. The LSD test results showed that the tooth whitening level in group I (immersed in strawberry juice) was significantly different to group II (immersed in apple juice) and group III (immersed in mineral water), with a significance value of 0.01 and 0.00 ( p ≤ 0.05). The tooth whitening level in group II was significantly different from group III, with a significance value of 0.03 (p ≤ 0.05). There were differences in the tooth whitening level between immersion in strawberry juice, apple juice, and mineral water, with the most effective tooth whitening level found in the strawberry juice immersion.

Abstract

Introduction: One of the most frequent dental problems that confronted dentist is tooth discoloration which can cause significant cosmetic problems. Extrinsic tooth discoloration occurs when stain forms on the tooth surface or in the pellicle and the common causes of extrinsic tooth discoloration is coffee. Robusta coffee contains high level of chromogenic compound which can incorporate itself into the acquired pellicle and tannic acids that can denature the pellicle protein and increase its stain ability. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the tooth discoloring effect of Robusta coffee solution. Methods: This research type was a true experiment (in vitro) using 30 samples of maxillary first premolar whose roots had been cut until the CEJ. Samples were divided into 2 groups (which are soaked in Robusta coffee solution and the other in mineral water) of 15, with a frequency of three times daily for seven days. The difference in tooth color changes was measured by using a spectrophotometer. Results: This research was analyzed by using t-test and there was a significant difference between the two groups (p-value≤0.00). Conclusion: Robusta coffee effected to tooth discoloration.

Abstract

Resin composites is one of the currently most frequently used aesthetic restoration material. A drawback of resin composites is contraction of polimerization which may result in the coming about of dental sensitivity due to microleakage. Flowable composite has high flow capacity and better adaptation capability making the thinnest application on cavity surfaces. An advantage of flowable composite is the possibility of using it as liner in composite resin restoration, which is expected to minimize the occurrence of post restoration dental sensitivity. This research was a descriptive research using the purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 27 first incisive and/or second incisive permanent maxilla teeth. A sensitivity test was used on the sample using chlor ethyl and completing questionnaire by patients. The result of dental sensitivity test indicated that 88.9% of the patients did not experience post restoration dental sensitivity and 11.1% of the patients was experience a decrease of dental sensitivity level. Based on research results the conclusion could be drawn that the used of flowable composite as a liner in resin composite class III restoration didn't had a post restoration dental sensitivity.
