Abstract

Abstract:The research is a classroom research that was conducted based on the problem occurred at the seventh grade students of SMP 34 Pekanbaru; namely the students were lack in speaking that influence them got poor sore in test. Therefore, this research was aimed at studying the improvement on the ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 34 Pekanbaru in speaking by using picture series. Besides, vocabulary is mostly improved after being taught by using picture series. The participants were 40 students from VII 4 of SMP 34 Pekanbaru. This research was conducted in three cycles. The data collection technique was obtained through (1) observation sheet which was applied to know the students and teacher performance during the teaching and learning process, (2) test was done to measure students’ achievement, and (3) field note was obtain information about teacher, the students activities and performance in the teaching and learning process during the implementation of picture series. The research finding can briefly explain as follow: first the student’s students speaking ability could be improved by using Picture series. Before the research was done, the average score of students was only 56,5 in pretest. After the research was done for cycle 1,it improved to 65,4. Then, In cycle 2 increased up to 70,3 and in cycle 3 up again to 76,8. Second, the observation sheet and field note result showed that the used of picture series make the teaching process more effective and it also helped students’ improve their speaking ability and more active in learning process. This improvement happened because this picture series method is appropriate to be applied to the class. Keyword: Picture Series, Students’ Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the significant of the correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension. The aim was to find out the correlation between students’ reading motivation and students’ reading comprehension. This Correlation research took place in SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru in July 2015. The sample was 36 students from First Year students that took by using cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, there were 30 questions that included in this test. The duration time for doing the test was 90 minutes. The data was analyzed by calculating the students’ score in reading motivation, finding out the reading comprehension score and correlating the two variables. The students’ score classified into three level of students’ reading motivation; they are: Low, Moderate, and High. Besides, the students’ score classified into five level mastery of Reading Comprehension; they are: very poor, poor, mediocre, good, and excellent. The data was presented by using graphic. Based on the result finding of this research, the coefficient correlation ( obtained was 0,424. Therefore, it answered the research that there was a relationship between reading motivation and reading comprehension in moderate level. For more details, the correlation of intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,016 by the coefficient correlation 0,399 that considered as low correlation. In another side, the correlation of extrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,000 by the coefficient correlation 0,599 that considered as moderate correlation. It can be concluded that based on the data that was analyzed, the students reading extrinsic motivation influence the students’ comprehension more than the intrinsic motivation. In other words, the contribution of reading motivation towards reading comprehension significant enough for the first year students of SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru. Another result from the students perception about the teacher’s teaching method as extrinsic motivation factor found out that they are more motivated if the teacher teaches them by speech as one of the stages of inquiry based learning than teacher teaching by group discussion and questioning. Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru in writing recount text .The participants were 34 students. The data was collected by using writing tests. The students were given four topics and they were asked to choose only one. The research finding indicated that the students were capable in writing recount text although they still had difficulty in writing recount text based on the topic given. The result of test showed the average score of students writing ability was 60.27. It showed that the students were in average to good level and it means that the writing recount text based on the topic given was not too difficult for the students.Keywords:Recount Text, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research was aimed to find out if the story telling technique could improve the speaking skill of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru.The participants were 28 students. The data was collected by using observation sheet,speaking tests, and field notes. The research finding indicated that the application of using story telling technique could improve students’ speaking ability both at the first cycle and second cycle. The result of pre-test shows the average score of students speaking ability was 48.2. It improved to 64.9 on the post-test 1 and 76.1on the post-test 2. It was also proved that applying story telling technique in teaching speaking could improve students’ interest and motivation to speak and share ideas with their friends in groups. In addition, applying story telling technique could also improve students’ ability to speak English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension.Keywords:Story Telling Technique, speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 15 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension. This research focuses on students’ reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of vocabulary, identifying references and finding generic structure, finding social function and finding conclusion,.The data were collected by using reading comprehension test in the format multiple choice. The test contained 25 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension isin the mediocre level with the mean score of 55.6. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in mediocre level with the mean score of 55.56, finding the fatual information is in mediocre level with mean score of 48.95, in finding meaning vocabulary is in good level with mean score of 39.95, in finding references is in mediocre level with the mean score of 66.66, in finding social function level with the mean score of 50.87, generic structure in the good level with mean score 63.17, as a conclusion, the highest score obtained by students is in finding generic structure with the mean score of 68.5. It is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding vocabulary, with the mean score of 3399.9 which categorized into poor level. The results of this study suggest that the students learn more about reading comprehension.Keywords : Study, Ability, Reading Comprehension.
