Abstract

Abstract: This research activity is to find out the contribution of rally table method to improve the writing skill of the first year students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. The participants were 39 students. The data was collected by using observations, tests, and field notes. The data was analyzed by quantitative and qualitative. The research finding showed that the implementation of rally table method as the teaching method could improve students’ writing ability both at the first cycle and second cycle. The finding also proved that in the pre-test students’ average score was only 44 and it improved to 56 in the post-test 1, and finally improved to 76 in the post-test 2. It was also proved that applying the procedures of rally table method in teaching writing could raise students’ interest and motivation to learn and share ideas with their groups since the core of rally table method was a collaboration between groups or pairs. In addition, applying rally table as a teaching method in English language teaching and learning could also improve students’ ability to writing in English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, fluency, and organization. Since Rally Table method has been proven effective in teaching writing a descriptive text, it was suggested that English teachers apply this method in order to improve students’ writing skill.Keywords: Rally Table, Students’ Writing Ability and Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir in comprehending report text. This research focuses on students’ comprehending report text in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of vocabulary, identifying references and making inferences,.The data were collected using report text test with multiple choice type. The test contained 30 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second grade students in comprehending report text is in the mediocre level with the mean score of 53.13. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in good level with the mean score of 66.83, finding the factual information is in mediocre level with the mean score of 58.01, in finding the meaning of vocabulary is in mediocre level with the mean score of 48,90, in finding references is in mediocre level with the mean score of 53.93, in finding inference is in poor level with the mean score of 37.98. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding main ideas with the mean score of 66.83 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding inference ,with the mean score of 37.98 which is categorized into poor level. This results of this study suggest that the students to learn more about comprehending report text.Keywords : Study, Ability, Report text.

Abstract

Abstract: This study seeks to the ability of the second year students of SMK N 1 Benai comprehending narrative text. It is a descriptive research carried at from March-April 2018. There are five classes in this research. The population were 194 students, their characters are homogeneous in terms of academic achievementand age factors. The cluster random strategies technique was choosen due to that every class has equal ooportunity to be a sample group. The sample conpused of two categories, try out class (XI AK 2) and sample class (XI TKJ 2). Try out class consisted of 42 students and 40 students from sample class. In this research, the try out test aimed at acknowledging the validity of the test.. The time allocation to administer the try out test and the revised test was 60 minutes for each of them. The data were analyzed by calculating the students’ scores, classified into five level mastery, such as very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. Based on the analyzing data of this research, the students’ ability in comprehending narrative text at second year students of SMK N 1 Benai was in mediocre level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 5.81. The implication of the finding is that the second year students of SMK N 1 Benai is able enough at comprehend narrative texts.Key Word : Students’ Ability, Comprehending Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research is aimed at finding out the ability of thesecond year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru in speaking. Forty-one students ofOffice Administration class in the second semester of academic year 2017/2018 werechosen to become the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The totalpopulation of the second year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is large enough to betaken as sample, it is select the sample by using cluster random sampling technique.The instrument of the research is a speaking test focusing on procedure texts. The datawere analyzed by using five components of speaking. They are: pronunciation,grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The result shows that the meanscore of the speaking test the second year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is 60,81.This figure is classified into mediocre level. The highest score of speaking test is 62,60(good level) for pronunciation and the lowest score of speaking test is 57,41 (mediocrelevel) for grammar. Therefore, it can be concluded that the speaking ability of thesecond year students of SMK Labor Pekanbaru is in the range of mediocre level.Key Words: Students’ Speaking Ability, Procedure Texts.

Abstract

This research aims at getting a solid map of standard English Proficiency possessed and used by Junior High School English teachers throughout Riau Province, which covers Listening, Structure, Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. The indicators of the standard English Proficiency are scores (high, moderate, and low) obtained by English teachers in TOEFL test. The subjects of the research are all Junior High School English teachers throughout Riau Province (613 teachers), all of whom become the research samples. The research instrument is TOEFL Equivalent intended to get a solid map of standard English Proficiency of the teachers. Research data were comprehensively analyzed to describe the English Proficiency of the teachers based on seven factors; gender, employment status, level of education, University alma mater, length of teaching period, attended trainings, and ethnics. By and large, data analysis results in the followings: a) English Proficiency of male English teachers is better that that of female ones, each of whose average scores are 407,8 – 391,4, b) English Proficiency of Non Civil Servant teachers is a bit higher than that of those Civil Servant ones, each of whose average scores are 392,16 and 393,9, c) The higher the level of education of the teachers, the higher or the better their English Proficiency, d) English Proficiency of teachers graduated from State University is better than that of those from Private University, whose average scores are 399,1 and 378,6, e) English Proficiency of the teachers teaching between the periods 1 up to 10 years is the highest (average score 401.7), followed by the teachers whose teaching period is between 11 and 20 years, then 21 up to 30 years and the last or the worst are those whose teaching period is above or longer than 31 years, f) English Proficiency of the teachers who have ever attended training on English is better than that of those who have not, each of whose average scores are 396.3 and 380.9, g) English Proficiency of Javanese English teachers is the best among the other ethnics, whose average score is 421.7, and then Malay English teachers, whose average score is 392.6, and then followed by Batak English teachers whose average score is 369.6, and the last is the English teachers from Minang ethnic, whose average score is 329.8. It can be inferred that the English Proficiency of Junior High School English teachers throughout Riau Province is generally below the expected target for their average score is still less than 450.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between language learning strategies used by autonomous learners of senior high schools in coastal areas based on type of school, and academic factors. In addition, this study is also to identify the strategies used by the respondents to learn English in general, four language skills, vocabulary, and structure. The population of the study are all autonomous learners from senior high schools in the coastal areas. As big as3000 students. The sample size is taken randomly as big as 10 % or 300 students out of the population. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) (Oxford; 1989) is used to get the quantitative data and interview is conducted to 60 selected students taken from the sample in order to have the qualitative data. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied to analyze the data on the use of the language learning strategies (SILL). One-Way Anova is taken to determine the differences of language learning strategies usage based on academic, and type of school. The findings show different language learning strategies among the students based on type of school, and academic factors. The students used social strategy (mean: 4.02) as the most effective strategy. The implication of the study is that language learning strategies should be well informed and discussed throughly in the classroom.

Abstract

The second phase of the research highlights the speaking ability of English language teachers at the junior high school level in Riau Province, with the aim of getting a concrete picture of English Proficiency, especially the ability to speak English. The subject of this study was 180 junior high school level teachers in Riau Province. All research subjects become the research sample. The instrument of this study is a recording of the activities of using English in classroom learning activities by junior high school English teachers throughout Riau Province. The collected data were analyzed to describe the speaking ability of the teachers based on 7 factors namely gender, employment status, level of education, tertiary education, length of service, frequency of participation in training activities as well as ethnicity. From gender factors, female teachers have better abilities than male teachers. From the employment factor, teachers of the Civil Servants have a slightly better ability than teachers who are Non-Civil Servants. Furthermore, the speaking ability based on the level of education, shows that the higher the level of education, the better the speaking ability of the English teachers. In terms of tertiary institutions, it turns out that PTN graduates have better speaking skills than PTS graduates. In terms of length of teaching period, it is known that teachers who have served 21 s.d 30 years have the best speaking ability, followed by those whose teaching period 11 s.d 20 years.

Abstract

Teaching material is a complete elaboration of the main material written in the curriculum or syllabus. Choosing and developing teaching materials is a must that is done by teachers. So that learning is in accordance with the learning objectives to be achieved. Choosing teaching materials is not just about collecting teaching material, but it must fulfill what is needed by students so that an effective, systematic and interesting learning process will be created. Likewise for English for Specific Purposes class, teaching English at agribusiness major of the University of PasirPengaraianwas still has problem in providing suitable teaching material.The purpose of this research wereto describe Agribusiness students’ goals in learning English What do students’ needs toward English teaching material. This research implemented research and development research design with the respondent of 52 students. The result of research showed that most of students expected that they could master English vocabulary related to Agribusiness and they needed in English teaching material discusses more about specific vocabulary but less portion for grammar. In addition, they also need the teaching material covered four English skills.

Abstract

This study aims at getting an accurate map of English for Bussiness Communication Competenceof the students of vocational schools in coastal areas of Riau Province in the form of writing ability. The target group of the study are the students of the vocational schools as big as 2476 students. Due to thehomogenous characters of the population, in term of age and academic backgrounds, the sample is taken randomly as big as 25% out of them that is 619 students. The thehnique of collecting data is asking the respondents to write personal letter and curriculum vitae.The collected data are judged by using Brown’s writing description (Brown:2004). The findings are as the following: a). the the average of the respondents’ writing ability in personal letter is 3.45 out of 4, b). the average of the respondents writing ability in curriculum vitae is 3.24 out of 4. The implication of these findings are that the respondents should be given more exercises, and corrections in using structure and vocabulary items in order to achieve the standard use of two language compenents in making personal letter and curriculum vitae.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using pictures in writing descriptive text at the second year students of MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir in the Academic Year 2018/2019 This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test) which contain writing activities in describing pictures. The population of this research were the Second Year Students of MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir. The sample of the research was the VIII A as big as 31 students. The needed data were collected by giving the writing test about descriptive text (pre-test and post-test) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pretest was 35.05, and the mean score of posttest was 38.92 and the difference between the two mean score was 3.87. Besides that, t-test of this research was -11.774 and t-table of this research was 2.042. It means that the t-test score is higher than t-table (-11.774>2.042). It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Pictures on the ability in writing descriptive texts of the second year students at MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba melintang Rohil. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. Thus, the use of pictures improves students writing ability especially in writing descriptive texts as media.Key Words: Pictures, Writing ability, Descriptive Text
