Abstract

The objectives of this paper are i) to explore factors influencing practices of timely breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding with special attention on factors related to the roles of father; and ii) to elaborate possible factors influencing father’s roles in breastfeeding based on literatures from the developed world. Studies conclude that father’s roles in supporting breastfeeding include participation in decision on infant feeding mode, involvement in child care taking and household tasks, as well as being the protector and the family provider. They also explore that the quality of couple relationship, parental knowledge and attitudes, characteristics of parental function, and the burden on the family economy are barriers which discourage fathers from being supportive towards breastfeeding. Indonesian fathers may influence breastfeeding in the same way and also experience similar barriers. However, due to different exposure to norms, beliefs, and cultures, a specific study on this matter is very relevant to be carried out in Indonesia prior to any breastfeeding promotion targeted to fathers.

Abstract

Anemia is the main micronutrient deficiency problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia. Anemia due to iron deficiency often coexists with zinc deficiency. Both iron deficiency anemia and zinc deficiency can increase the risk of obstetric complications among pregnant women i.e. bleeding during labor and post-partum hemorrhage. Iron-folate supplementation among pregnant women had been conducting since long time ago throughout this country; however, effort to improve the nutritional status particularly among adolescent girls prior to pregnancy is still lack behind. Iron and zinc have antagonistic interaction. Therefore it was challenging to alleviate anemia problem among adolescent girls with appropriate ratio of iron-zinc supplementation, and will give a benefit to improve their nutritional status. This study was aimed to investigate the different ratios of ironzinc supplementation on reducing the prevalence of anemia as improving the nutritional status of adolescent school girls.A female elementary school students age 10-12 years old (n= 137) were screened in rural area of Kupang City, East Timor Province. Subjects were assigned randomly to one of the three groups for daily iron-zinc supplementation for 12 weeks; Group 1 (iron; 60 mg/day), Group 2 (iron and zinc; 30 mg and 15 mg/day), Group 3 (iron and zinc; 60 mg and 15 mg/day). Hemoglobin concentration was measured by cyanmethemoglobin method (Hemocue) to determine the prevalence of anemia (Hb level 120 g/L), while anthropometric assessment was conducted for measuring weight and height to determine the nutritional status. General characteristics was assessed through interview. At base line, 29.1% of subjects suffered from anemia and in general, the prevalence was reduced to around 13.1% after they took iron supplements with or without zinc. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly increased among all subjects euther suffered from anemia or not. The result of this study showed that subject who received iron/zinc supplement with ratio 4: 1 for 12 weeks asa “blanket approach” significantly increased hemoglobin conc. higher than to who received iron alone. Similar result occurred when supplement was received to anemic adolescent. Although there were significantly increased of weight, height and BMI for age among all groups, the percentage of subjects were underweight, stunted and wasted remains high after supplementation that 54.6%, 36.9% and 39.2% respectively. Anemia seems to be a health problem among adolescent school girls in Kupang City, East Timor Province and iron-zinc supplementation with appropriate ratio is promising to increase hemoglobin level. A large scale of cohort study was recommended for female student, to investigate the effect iron/zinc supplementation with ratio 2: 1 on iron, zinc status and growth performance among adolescent girls.Key Words: Iron, Zinc, Adolescent, Girls

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract We explored paternal roles in timely breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding practices in Jakarta using a mixed-methods approach in sequence of focus group discussions (FGDs – phase 1) and a quantitative survey (phase 2). The study population was parents with infants aged below 6 months. Data on paternal roles, maternal attributes, and breastfeeding practices were collected from 43 purposively selected parents in phase 1 and 536 couples in phase 2. FGDs provided insights to finalize the questionnaire for the survey. Nine paternal roles were identified: 1-accompanying the mother during antenatal and postnatal visits, 2-suggesting places for health checkups and delivery, 3-seeking information about child nutrition, 4-accompanying the mother during delivery, 5-facilitating psychological support of the mother, 6-childcare involvement, 7-engagement in childcare discussions, 8-involvement in decisions about infant feeding mode, and 9-enthusiasm for fatherhood. Roles 3 (aOR=1.65; 95%CI=1.07 to 2.54) and 9 (1.59; 1.04-2.44) were positively associated with timely initiation of breastfeeding. Role 8 was positively associated with exclusive breastfeeding (1.69; 1.10-2.60), but roles 2 (0.49; 0.32-0.76) and 5 (0.97; 0.41-0.64) were negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding. Fathers played roles in breastfeeding practices under study. Fathers need a tailored breastfeeding promotion to stimulate necessary support for breastfeeding mothers. Abstract

A.Kata kunci: Defisiensi vitamin A, anak sekolah, minyak fortifikasiAbstractVitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains as one of significant public health problems in Indonesia. Around 50% of under five children are suffering from subclinical VAD. Deficiency of vitamin A will affect several important role in the body, such as immune system, vision, reproductive system and cell differentiation. Therefore, guarding Indonesian children to be free from VAD is crucial for their quality as Human Resources. We assessed the impact of the consumption of vitamin A fortified cooking oil on the improvement of vitamin A and hemoglobin status among school children in urban slum area in Makassar City. The study was an intervention design Before-After. Healthy school children 7-10 years were selected from schools and de-wormed before the intervention. Serum retinol and hemoglobin was measured at baseline and at 3 months after. Fortified oil was made available through distribution at shops and accompanied with social marketing. Eventhough overall there was no change in VAD prevalence, the VAD prevalence is lower among children who consumedfortified oil ³12 weeks (26.6%) compared to those who consumed <12 weeks (42%). Prevalence of anemia decreased from 21.8% to 11.6%. We recommended that fortified oil is made mandatory.Key words: Vitamin A deficiency, school children, fortified oil

Abstract

DKI Jakarta is currently in a state of waste emergency because Bantar Gebang landfill is estimated to reach its full capacity by 2021. This problem should not be solely solved by the city’s administrator but must also involve all citizens. As one of the efforts to contribute to the solution, training was given to representatives from RW 1 – 4 in Cempaka Putih Timur village. These representatives consist of community groups (RW) leaders, neighborhood groups (RT) leaders, and environmentalist. The goal of the training was to educate the representatives on how to manage waste properly, starting from reducing waste until the method of handling waste before it is disposed of. The final goal is to apply the content of the training in the village and reduce the amount of waste delivered to Bantar Gebang landfill. The approach used in the training was student – centered learning to improve the participants’ understanding. The activity was started with a discussion, followed by sharing of waste management method, followed by games for deeper understanding. The analysis of the result of the training, analyzed by the difference in pre – game and post game’s score and survey to the trainees, indicates an increased understanding of the participants.

Abstract

The i3L student-led community service and responsibility (CSR) activities are aimed to foster values of collaborative work and to possess social concerns and responsibility for people and environment. Started in 2014/2015, Student Council and Student Community Clubs managed the CSR activities under the supervision of Centre for Student Development Department. It is compulsory for every student to participate in at least five CSR activities. The CSR activities cover three themes, namely education, environment, and social-economy-culture (SEC). The education theme includes English tutoring program to orphanage children and Science tutoring program for underprivileged primary age children. The Environment theme includes campus waste management program and Clean Up Jakarta. The SEC themes include blood donation, Ramadhan event of charity and iftar, Ribbon Run for mental health awareness, and Animal Shelter visit. In academic year 2018/2019, there were 5, 2, 4 activities conducted under education, environment and SEC themes respectively, involving over 724 participants from students, faculty and educational personnel. The activities were conducted in collaboration with 11 partner institutions. The CSR activities have built collaborative work and social awareness among students and faculties. In future, the impacts of CSR activity for students’ soft-skill competencies and for the society need to be evaluated.
