Abstract

Abstract The need for wood as the main ingredient in shipbuilding is always increasing and the acquistion of quality wood for construction of shipbuilding is increasingly difficult to find on the market, because this is due to the depletion of wood in the forest. This study aims to determine the physical and mechanical propertiesof wood powder composites and bagasse, so that they can be used as ship construction materials. In making test specimens refer to ASTM and JIS standards. While the physical testing of weight and density refers to the ASTM D970 standard and JIS A5980 water absorption test. Mechanical bending testing refers to the ASTM D790-02 standard, the ASTM D638-08 tensile test and the ASTM D5942-96 impact test. The results showed that the largest water absorption was composite wood powder 60% and bagasse 40% by 13,47%, and the largest density was a composite of wood powder 80% which was 1078,29 kg/m3. The highest bending mechanical test is a composite of wood powder 20% which is equal to 29,689 Mpa which is strongly equivalent to class III wood, the largest tensile test is a composite of wood powder 40% by 25,2547 Mpa which is strongly equivalent to grade V wood, and the biggest impact test is composite 40% wood powder which is 0,0469 J/mm2. Based on the results of the study that composite wood powder and bagasse can be used as construction materials for outer shells and deck houses. Keywords : Wood powder, bagasse, ASTM, JIS, composite, bending, tensile, impact

Abstract

Difficulties to obtain good wooden materials as vessels primary materials conduce to drop the quality and the lifetime of a ship. To satisfy new ship building demand, a shipyard tends to apply fast building and ignores the ship quality, types, and dimension and materials characteristics. Shipyard also did not consider about the technical and operational aspects as rule and regulations for wooden vessels. Un-optimal ship construction make it low in quality and at the end, it cannot be used directly after handover. In general, the cause of damage of ship was due to unsatisfying of construction criteria such as the types of wood, including the age and the length of the wood used for its construction. In addition, it had been found that there were unsatisfied ships operating under construction regulation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Fish catch handling highly influential by the quality of fish that must kept to be fresh. Maintaining the quality of the catch is done with good handling and correctly, especially the storage of fish is highly influenced by the quality of insulation (Insulator). Polyurethane is a solid plastic foam mixture by polyol and Isocynate commonly used as a thermal insulation material on fish hold. Coco fiber derived from coconut fruit seeds contain about 30% of the seed oil. Part of the cross section in the unit cell has a central hollow fibers that serves as an acoustic and thermal insulator so as to decrease the bulk density of the fiber is very well used as an insulator because it has a low thermal conductivity. The addition of coconut fiber as a biodegradable that has a physical properties as a heat insulator aims to minimize use of polyurethane as insulation, addition of Coco fibre can be done until 70%, and the addition of 95.5% density and water absorption reached 26.8%. Ability to absorb water composites increased from 15% to 50.98%, density increased to 5% at 516 kg/m3.Keywords : Coco Fibre, Composite, physical properties, Polyurethane and density
