Students’ Perceptions on Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in EFL Class: An Overview of Altissia Usage Rizky Vita Losi

Abstract

Previous research has revealed that MALL are becoming widely used since it can increase students’ knowledge and skills in English language learning. This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions on MALL, particularly Altissia, in EFL class. Most of students did not use or access Altissia during the learning process was becoming one of the problems that leads to the low ability in students’ English skills. In total, thirty students answered a questionnaire survey after experiencing Altissia in their learning activity. The findings revealed that the students’ agreement to the positive perceptions were showed in the questionnaire prevailed over their disagreement or neutral responses. Altissia contributed great impact on their listening skills and vocabulary knowledge. Altissia also supported them to enhance their motivation and interest to keep learning English. Students felt excited in learning new levels in different topics on Altissia. Students could practice to communicate their English skills more often after learning with Altissia. On the other hand, as the findings also indicated the students did not get any notification related to the study time and they did not experience writing activity on Altissia. Moreover, Altissia can be an alternative learning media that can improve students’ skills in their EFL class.

Abstract

Foreign branding is a branding strategy by giving a brand name using spelling or pronunciation in a certain foreign language, with the main target of influencing the dimensions of brand image, and influencing perceived quality, as well consumer attitudes towards products. The purpose of this research is to explain foreign branding and its effect on brand perception. A literature review from various sources related to foreign branding strategy was conducted as part of the research. According to the research findings, brand image, purchase decision, and brand admiration are the effects of foreign branding. Consumers tend to prefer foreign-sound products because it creates brand image as international products which have best quality. So it effects on how people decide to but the foreign products and people also admire foreign-sound products too much especially in young generation. Local entrepreneurs should learn a lot about foreign branding to compete and upgrade the level of their products and sales.

Abstract

When students are asked to write or read any English stories, then they need to learn about vocabulary as well. Writing skill challenges foreign students to be creative to create stories, while reading skill invites students to be good at comprehending the text. Recent studies have claimed in preference for the use of comic strips in language learning. The current study will go into detail about the use of comic strips as a learning medium, its advantages, and the effect to English learning at class. This literature review used George's (2008) model as a research method. The information was gathered from research articles about the use of comic strips in learning languages that were published in trustworthy international journals and recognized national journals. According to the review, prior research has shown that using comic strips in language learning can benefit students with their vocabulary, writing, and reading skills.

Abstract

Language is essential to be used to advertise products. This study purposed to find the persuasive strategies used in beauty products slogans on Instagram. This study used descriptive qualitative as the research design and textual analysis was used to analyze the data. There were 50 data which were taken from the slogans of Wardah product advertisements. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were ethos (16 data), pathos (11 data) and logos (11 data). The findings on the use of ethos became the most used strategy in the slogans. The advertisement used pathos to persuade the consumers’ feeling or emotion to be attractive to buy the products.

Abstract

This research purposed to design and develop an E-Module for English at workplace at Administrative Office in Besilam village. This research used Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model with five stages; Firstly was analyzing problems, potentials, and needs. Secondly was designing to determine Canva application used, the design/theme of the e-module, and the format. Thirdly is developing the design that has been previously made by using Canva application. In addition, at this stage, a validation test was conducted for the validators, namely material experts, linguists, and media experts to determine the feasibility of the E-Module that has been designed and developed. Fourthly is the implementation. In this stage, a practicality test and effectiveness test were administered to the staff and the instructor. Lastly was the evaluation. At this evaluation stage, the improvement of E-Module that has been given input by material experts, linguists, and media experts. Quantitative and qualitative data were used to collect the information. The research findings proved that the average score for eligibility assessment was 91.34%, the average score for practicality assessment was 95.01%, and the average score for effectiveness was 85. In conclusion, the eligibility assessment was classified as "Very Eligible", the practicality assessment was classified as "Very Practical", and the effectiveness assessment was classified as "Very Effective". E-module of English at workplace can be used as an alternative method to improve English proficiency to be better.

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive overview of attitude appraisal within the context of narrative and recount texts. The study investigated to use attitude as components of evaluation through language usage in students' recount and narrative text. In this study, qualitative research techniques based on library research were applied. Data collection used documentation methods that were adapted from library sources. Data analysis employs content analysis approaches, where each source or piece of literature is modified and the context's applicability is assessed in light of literature from other books, journals, or studies. Ultimately, the findings emphasize the significance of attitude appraisal in narrative and recount texts, offering insights into the nuanced ways it shapes and enhances the reader's interpretative journey. Taken from four previous studies which had on Appraisal analysis, all data found the use of affect mostly in students’ writing in narrative and recount text. Reaching 50% among the other two types, judgment and appreciation, affect is one of the type of attitude in appraisal showing the way of writer in giving positive or negative feeling and emotion based on what they experienced.

Abstract

This research purposed to investigate the EFL learners on the using of Language Learning Strategies (LLS) in learning English. This research aimed to find out the level of using LLS and identify the most and least used strategy by EFL learners at University of Medan Area. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method. The total sampling technique was applied to all participants of EFL students who enrolled English practicum class in 2023-2024. The data were gathered through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0 developed by Oxford and was administered to all 50 EFL students. SILL consists of 50 statements which have six categories, as follow: Memory, Cognitive, Compensation, Metacognitive, Affective, and Social strategies. The data were analyzed through Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 25. The data result revealed that Compensation strategy (M=4.13) was the most often used by the EFL students, while Memory strategy (M=3.18) was the least used by them. In the end, the EFL learners who used Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) reached the medium and high level in this research.
