Abstract

The purpose of the study is to describe readability of reading texts in textbook, ‘Pathway to English’ for SMA/MA Grade X’ published by Erlangga. The study is a quantitative content analysis. The source of the data was the textbook, and only reading texts with minimally 150 words in length were taken as the sample. 22 reading texts that matched the criteria were analyzed quantitatively in percentage form. Result of the data analysis shows that reveals that 9 (or 41%) reading texts match tenth grade level, but the rest, 4 (or 18%) reading texts are to easy, at 7th-8th grade level. and 9 (or 41%) reading texts are are fairly difficult to difficult, at 11th-16th grade level. Put it another way, 59% reading texts with minimally 150 words in length selected for use in EFL textbook ‘Pathway to English’ published by Penerbit Erlangga in 2016 were not in accordance with tenth grade SMA students’ readability level. In addition, It was also found that the data show that readability level of a text do not depend on text length.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to find out the effectiveness of using the movie as a media of learning to improve students listening skills especially in Dictation. The researcher uses Pre – Experimental Research and the sample of the study is the 9th grade students in SMP Anugrah Tondano and the total number of the sample are 20 students. The instrument of this study is an answer sheet consist of 20 numbers that students have to fill with word. The data were calculated by the result of students’ Pretest are 41 and Posttest are 77. The students gained scores from Pretest to Posttest are 36. The result of this research showed that using a movie as a media of learning to improve students listening skills especially in dictation is effective.

Abstract

The learning process that is carried out in a monotonous way turns out to result in low student absorption of knowledge. Students have many problems, especially lack of vocabulary. This research is aimed to find out whether using Numbered Head Together there is an improvement for students who have problem of lack vocabulary or not. In this research was quantitative research used pre-experimental design with one group of pre-test and post-test. The subject of the study was conducted at SMP NEGERI 2 ERIS which consisted of 18 students. Then, the technique of collecting the data is through pre-test and post-test. The results of this research were as follows: Pre-test, where the writer has not used the Numbered Head Together Learning Model, as a result there is only 1 student who got the highest score was 8 or 11%, with a mean value of 5.2. And for the post-test, the writer has implemented the Numbered Head Together Learning Model, with an average value of 7.16. From the results above, the mean score of the post-test is highest than the mean score of the pre-test. Thus, the final conclusion that the writer to convey is that Using Numbered Head Together Learning Model is able to improve students' vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the values of heroism in the novel The Call of The Wild by Jack London. This study aims to describe the heroism values contained in the novel The Call of the Wild by Jack London with a objective approach. To analyze the data, the researcher used qualitative methods, because the data were collected in the form of words. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. The main source is the novel itself entitled The Call of the Wild. Secondary sources are books, articles, internet, and other literary works. In this research, there are six elements of the values of heroism they are: 1) Strength, 2) Bravery, 3) Integrity, 4) Saving Others, 5) Willing to Sacrifice, and 6) Selfless.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students' perception toward teachers’ role in motivating students to learn English during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this research, researchers use the qualitative method. To collect the data, the researchers used a questionnaire that consists of 10 questions. The population of this study is the students at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano and the samples are the 8th grade students with a total of 23 students. The samples chosen are the active students who follow the teaching and learning process in their school in online and offline ways. The findings show that students are having great experiences in teaching and learning English. In general, the students respond to the statements very well with positive responses dominated by Agree and Strongly Agree. It showed that the students’ perceptions of the teacher’s role in English learning are various in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. In general, Covid-19 had a significant impact on the world of education, including in the educational system in Indonesia. Traditional and routine learning that emphasizes the interaction of teachers and students in the classroom and outside the classroom shifts to distance learning.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out the effectiveness of the After-Reading Card Game in improving students’ vocabulary. This research is quantitative research with a pre-experimental design (One Group Pretest and Posttest design). This research is conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Remboken with 25 10th grade students as the subject. Pretest and posttest are used as the instrument to collect the data. The data are analyzed using the SPSS 22(Statistical Product and Service Solutions). The result of the data shows that the pre-test (22.88) is lower than the post-test (52.28). The result of the research leads to the conclusion that Reading Card Game has a significant effect for students’ vocabulary improvement and students more active on learning process. It means that the use of the after-reading card game can give contribution in improving the quality of English language teaching and learning, especially in improving students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of pictures could increase students' vocabulary. Students of SMP Kristen 17 Tatengesan for the 2022/2023 school year (including 20 students of seventh grade) were selected for this study. Pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test was used in this research. This study consisted in four meetings. Prior to treatment (used pictures), the first researchers performed a pretest. After treatment (used picture), students were given a post-test. Data collection technique used test as instrument. That is objective in terms of matching the item 5 numbers, completion 5 numbers and true/false 10 numbers, The total is 20 numbers. The result of this study found that pictures was effective showed the scores post-test (78.52) was higher those of pre-test (50.5). This suggests that the use of pictures is considered can effectively increase students vocabulary.

Abstract

This study focuses on improving students’ vocabulary mastery and whether it can improve through flash cards. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the learning method using picture media in the form of flashcards improved student’s vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 5 Tondano. In this study, the researcher used quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. Students take the pre-test (T1) prior to treatment, and post-test (T2) is administered following treatment. The subject of this study was seventh grade students with a total of 11 children as participants. The results of this study shown that mean score of the post-test (93,72) was higher than mean score pre-test (69,81). The results correlate with several previous studies. It means that the outcomes of this study provide relevance to the theory of previous studies that flashcards encourage students' vocabulary learning. It can be concluded that the used of flashcard as a learning media is effective to improve student’s vocabulary mastery.
