Abstract

Alliteration comes up as one of the efforts that follow the notion of linguistic motivation in creating language retention and memorization to learners. Idiom is one of the language phenomena where alliteration takes place as part of its non-arbitrariness principle. The claim underlying the effectiveness of alliteration in aiding language retention in idiom is tried to be applied in some classroom activities which may consist of pre, whilst, and post-teaching. All the activities in the teaching session are arranged to be integrated with idiom learning using alliteration. Learners' ability to recall idioms containing aliteration will also be tested in the provided exercises. The success of the expected retention on learners will be measured from the result gained from the activity divided simply into three phases, pre-teaching, whilst-teaching, and post-teaching where it will be conducted for approximately 90 minutes. As some deviations possibly made can influence the result, the teacher should figure out some considerations affecting the effectiveness of the lesson given. Reflection phase should be conducted maximally, so that learners’ response is really fruitful that it can be known whether they are engaged with the activity and gain the material well. In the first activity, they work semi-independently, so that the assessment is expected to be more objective, covering the combination of group and individual work.

Abstract

In English language teaching, cognitive linguistics has played an important role in classroom activities. This can be the depicted in the use of the textbooks. In this study, the textbook used is English for international Relations book, a part of English for Specific Purposes series published by Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Two of the features that chime cognitive linguistics principles are metaphors and categorization leading to prototype. Meanwhile, one of the clashes that is apparent in the textbook is the use of English which is unnatural, one of the factors is the textbook is used in a non-English speaking country. In the end, there are some suggestions on how to deal with the tenets of cognitive linguistics for the features that still clash with the principles of cognitive linguistics. First, it can be done by introducing some words that may have different meanings if they are added with different prepositions. The second example might be adjusting the use of the pictures and illustrations with the text and context. Also, the learners are suggested to know the patterns of the target language as they are different from their mother tongue.

Therefore, the staff in the company needs to learn more about reading and writing documents in English. Besides, the staff also needs to master the communication skills in English. As they also need to communicate with the sellers from other countries. This reason then initiates the community service program held by PIKAT (Pemanfaatan IPTEKS Bagi Masyarakat) of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur. From the program that had been run for one month, the team had successfully identified the problems of the staff, especially in writing and speaking in English, and gave the staff training both online and offline. The program continues via the Whatsapp group. In the future, it is expected that the company staff can use English in written and spoken form more fluently so that the company can reach the international market and sell more products to other countries. Abstract

As a multicultural country, Indonesia has many cultures that must be taught to its people, especially to university students through some university subjects. However, not all students understand well about their own culture, which becomes one of the main concerns of the lecturer and the students themselves. Therefore, the curriculum is then designed to enable students to learn about the culture aside from their courses. One of the lessons that also allows students to understand their own culture is English. In this study, the researcher chooses English II, the English lesson given to second-semester students. Students are encouraged to learn the language during the English class while also learning the Indonesian culture to know more about it and raise their awareness to preserve it. Some topics included Indonesian Literature, Wayang and Other Indonesian Art Performances, and some other issues that may be closely related to the Indonesian culture substances. The lesson problems were presented in some ways, including presentation, discussion, storytelling, and role-play. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how Indonesian culture is embedded in students’ lesson materials. This study uses observation and documentation as to its data collection. Meanwhile, the study revealed some classroom activities and assignments that indicate the implementation of the Indonesian culture in English II Classes. Drama is among English teaching and learning activities that can improve students' communication and speaking skills. However, only a few studies documented the integration between local culture and drama for English teaching and learning activities. This study aims at exploring the use of drama wayang in the English for Specific Purposes Speaking activities. A descriptive qualitative study was employed as the study design, with observation, documentation, and questionnaire as methods of data collection. The subjects of this study were first-semester university students from the Indonesian Language and Literature Department. Findings showed that students were enthusiastic about performing drama wayang and could perform it well. Furthermore, drama wayang can be integrated into English teaching and learning activities to improve activity variety and attract students’ interest in learning speaking. This study also implies that drama wayang can be developed into an ESP teaching method combined with Indonesia's local culture and serves as an innovative and contextual ESP teaching method.
