Abstract

The mechanism of nanofiltration separation is largely based on the size and difference in diffusion rates for organic molecules and electrostatic effects for ions. However, because the molecules are not more charged, the mechanism based on molecular size is more widely used. Nanofiltration membranes operate without phase changes and usually have a high rejection of multivalent inorganic salts and small organic molecules at moderate pressure. This makes the separation process very competitive in terms of selectivity and cost when compared to traditional separation. Nanofiltration membranes have been applied in various industrial sectors namely wastewater treatment, pharmaceutical processes and biotechnology, and food engineering. This article is expected to provide ideas and recommendations regarding the innovation of making nanofiltration membranes for dyestuff waste separators.

Abstract

Nanofiltration membranes occur due to the process of pressure differentials to separate the solut larger than the solution. This membrane is used in water purification processes, such as water softening, dye removal, and micropolutan removal. Membranes have several important criteria to determine membrane performance as filtration, namely flux (permeability), rejection (permectivity), thickness, morphology and mechanical properties of the membrane. This article is expected to provide ideas and recommendations regarding membrane characterization and the manufacture of nanofiltration membranes using modified polyamide membranes.

Abstract

Devotion with the title of potential plant extracts as natural pesticides in Salu village, Miomafo Barat district, TTU district was held in November 2018. The purpose of this service was to provide knowledge on how to increase food production through eradicating pests, providing knowledge about the advantages of natural pesticides compared to synthetic pesticides, and make soursop leaf extract as a natural pesticide. The main target of this activity is the farmers who are conducted through methods of lecture, brochure distribution, and product manufacturing training. This service activity was conducted in 3 sessions. The first session was socialization of ways to increase food production through eradicating pests. The second session is a socialization of the advantages of natural pesticides compared to synthetic pesticides. Making soursop extract as a natural pesticide is the third session that closes all the series of devotion. In addition to providing questions, farmers also provide personal experiences that are useful for the development of science. The coordination of the making of soursop extract indicates the high enthusiasm of the farmers in Salu village towards this devotion. The final product in this activity is soursop leaf extract which is ready to be applied to plants.

Abstract

Silica powder was obtained from the mud volcano of Napan Village following the co-precipitation method. This research aimed to determine the phase changes that occur in calcined silica with various temperatures. This research was carried out in three stages, there are the preparation of a mud volcano using the pre-treatment method, extraction of silica with sodium hydroxy solution, and calcination of silica with temperature variations. By analysis of XRF and XRD results, the mud volcano samples showed a high percentage of SiO2 minerals. The results of silica characterization using XRD showed that uncalcined and calcined silica at 600oC had an amorphous structure with broading peaks. Tridymite and cristobalite phases were detected in calcined silica at 800oC and 1000oC. Calcined silica at a temperature of 1000oC transformed the tridymite phase to cristobalite with a decrease in the intensity of the tridymite phase while the cristobalite phase increased.

Abstract

The depletion of world fossil energy has led to the development of renewable energy from vegetable oils, including Feun Kase with abundant vegetable oils. The main focus of this research was to identify the physicochemical properties and to explore the potential of Indonesian Feun Kase (Thevetia peruviana) oil as renewable energy. Feun Kase oil has been isolated by press and soxhlet method. The soxhlet (66.32% weight) provided a higher yield than the press (25.58% weight). The oil yielded was directly tested for the physicochemical test according to SNI 7182: 2015 (Indonesian National Standard). The parameters in this research were water content, acid number, saponification number, iodine value, density, viscosity, cetane number, flash point, and cloud point. The GCMS profile showed the presence of several fatty acids such as hexadecenoic acid (palmitic acid), 9,12−octadecadienoic acid (linoleic acid), 9−octadecenoic acid (oleic acid), and octadecenoic acid (stearic acid). Although there was no conclusion in terms of biodiesel, this research could give the report as the basic information that revealed the potential of Feun Kase oil. Several tests revealed that Feun Kase oil can be used as the feedstock for biodiesel. Unlike palm oil, the non-edible oil of Feun Kase does not compete with the food sector. Thus, it indicated that Feun Kase oil is a very competitive feedstock for renewable energy.

Abstract

The community carries out bathing and washing activities directly in the retention basin which can cause polluted water. Water quality checks need to be carried out before treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of water in the retention basin. Determination of the sampling location by purposive sampling. Sampling was carried out once in August 2021. Parameter measurements were carried out in the field and in the laboratory. The measurement results are compared with the quality standards listed in the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 32 of 2017 concerning Environmental Health Quality standards and Water Health Requirements for Sanitary Hygiene, Swimming Pools, Solus Per Aqua and Public Baths. A parameter that passed the quality standard was E-Coli while pH, hardness, nitrate, temperature, and TDS still met the quality standards. Retention basin water in Tubuhue Village seen from the parameters of temperature, pH, TDS, hardness, and nitrate can be used for sanitation hygiene purposes, but judging from the parameter E-Coli cannot be used for sanitary hygiene purposes.

Abstract

The demand for biodiesel in the renewable energy sector continues to grow yearly. However, the majority of biodiesel sources currently still compete with the food sector. Feun Kase seeds contain high oil and do not compete with food, so they have prospects as a new source of biodiesel. This study aimed to find the optimal conditions for synthesizing biodiesel from Feun Kase seed oil, carried out through transesterification with four reaction variables: catalyst variation, time, temperature, and the molar ratio of oil/methanol. This study was equipped with parameter test data according to SNI (Indonesian National Standard) 7182:2015, also equipped with characterization using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy). The highest biodiesel yield of 84.09% was obtained using optimum conditions of 1% NaOH catalyst, oil/methanol molar ratio of 1:6 at 70°C for 90 minutes of reaction. The test results of biodiesel parameters are density (851 kg/m3), smoke point (6°C), kinematic viscosity (5.35 cSt); acid number (1.08 mg KOH/gr), saponification number (159.32 mg KOH/gr), iodine number (78.62 g I2/100 g sample), flash point (165°C), and cetane number (62.86). FTIR analysis proved the presence of methyl esters with typical absorption at 1743 cm-1, 1195.87 cm-1, and 1436.97 cm-1. GCMS characterization showed that Feun Kase biodiesel was dominated by methyl oleate (53.45%), methyl palmitate (27.05%), methyl stearate (10.96%), and methyl linoleate (6.29%).
