Abstract

This study aims to describe the factors that support students' ability in the learning process to speak using video. This research was classroom action research. Classroom action research was done in four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Quantitative data was gained from the score of the student's speaking test. The test was given at the end of every cycle. The qualitative data was collected through the result of observation. It described the factors that support the students' ability to speak based on the result observation from the collaborator activities both the students and the researcher itself. The research aimed to explain how video can increase students' speaking skills in the second semester of the English Education Study Program for IKIP Gunungsitoli. Using video can increase students' skills in speaking. Quantitative data support it included test results in every cycle. The quantitative data show that students have improved speaking skills in every cycle using video and reaching the indicator of success. The students' ability to speak cannot pass the score standard in the cycle because most students cannot convey their ideas about the material. However, in cycle II, there is increasing in student's ability to speak. The quantitative data also is supported by the qualitative data through observation results. The observation sheet result describes that the students' activities improved every meeting by using video.

Abstract

Writing is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by students. The syllabus of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat expects the students to be able to compiling the narrative text in the form of personal experience. The purpose of the research was describing the students’ writing ability in narrative text and the factors affecting it. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The analysis of the data was conducted by following steps. Analyzing the quantitative data by using analytic scoring rubric from Glenceo namely, focus/organization, elaboration/support/style, and grammar and mechanics and analyzing the qualitative data through transcripts of structure interviews. Furthermore, the informant of the research was class VIII-A students of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected through documentary data of students’ worksheets and interview both students and English teacher. The result showed that the students’ ability in writing narrative text was in Good category (66 score). It is proved by the findings that there were 7 students (35%) included in ‘Excellent’ category, there were 4 students (20%) included ‘Good category, there were 3 students (15%) included ‘Fairy’ category and category included in ‘Poor’ were 6 students (30%). Furthermore, the factors that affect the students’ ability in writing narrative text were: students cognitive it was problem organization, less motivation, lack of grammar, lack of practice and the influence of the first language (L1) on writing in English.

Abstract

Writing is  a transaction with words whereby someone free his self from what he presently think, feel and perceive. In learning writing, most of the students could not achieve the MCC. There were some problems faced by the students in studying writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021 namely: the students were lack of vocabularies. The students were unable to describe the object. The students were unable to identify topic, main idea, content from descriptive text. Therefore, to overcome the problems, the researcher conducted a research by using Board Game at the Tenth Grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021. The purpose of the research is to increase the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. In increasing the students’ writing descriptive text, the researcher used Board Game and applied as Classroom Action Research (CAR). The  research has been conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of two meetings, there were four steps in conducting the research namely (1) Planning, (2) Action, (3) Observation (4) Reflection. The result of the data in Cycle I that the average score was 44.64, the maximum score was 7.14 and the minimum score was 50. While in Cycle II the average score was 82.14; the maximum score was 72 and the minimum score was 28. From the result of the research, It can be concluded that Board Game Increase the Students’ Ability Writing Descriptive Text at the Tenth Grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa dalam memahami bacaan dengan menggunakan Strategi Multipass di semester III Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IKIP Gunungsitoli 2015/2016. Penelitian ini Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Subyek penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester III kelas A Program Studi Bahasa Inggris sebanyak 22 orang. Data penelitian ini terdiri dari data kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kuantitatif diperoleh melalui nilai tugas dan nilai tes membaca. Dan data kualitatif melalui hasil pengamatan. Hasil pelitian dari siklus 1-siklus 3 menunjukkan bahwa Strategi Multipass mampu meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa dalam memahami bacaan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komponen-komponen dan figur retorika dari wacana persuasif tertulis pada iklan cetak. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain evaluasi deskriptif yakni analisa isi yang menjelaskan tiga komponen iklan persuasi (etos, patos, logos) dan figur retorika iklan (skema dan kiasan). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dari 20 iklan minum ringan, sebagian besar (90%) memiliki patos. Logos berada pada posisi kedua (80%). Sebagian iklan tidak memiliki etos, hanya 60% atau 12 iklan. Selanjutnya semua iklan minuman ringan (100%) memiliki skema, hanya 40% atau 8 iklan yang memiliki kiasan.

Abstract

Abstrak Berbicara dapat didefinisikan sebagai kegiatan produktif dimana seorang siswa berkomunikasi dengan siswa lain untuk mencapai tujuan tertentu atau mengungkapkan pendapat, maksud, harapan dan sudut pandang, dengan skor Minimum Criterion Competence (MCC) adalah 65. Pada kenyataannya, siswa dapat tidak mencapai PKS karena siswa kekurangan kosa kata, siswa tidak dapat mengungkapkan pendapatnya dengan menggunakan ekspresi bertanya dan memberi pendapat, dan guru bahasa Inggris masih menggunakan metode konvensional dalam proses belajar-mengajar. Berdasarkan kondisi di atas, peneliti melakukan penelitian dengan menggunakan Strategi Time Token dalam pembelajaran berbicara. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sogaeadu tahun 2020. Peneliti mengambil sampel sebanyak 40 siswa dengan menggunakan Teknik Cluster Sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah Tes Lisan. Tes tersebut divalidasi oleh tiga validator dan dinyatakan valid dan reliabel. Kemudian peneliti memberikan pre-test dan post-test pada kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol untuk mengetahui normalitas data dan homogenitas sampel. Setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menganalisis data dan hasilnya menunjukkan: (1) Nilai rata-rata kemampuan siswa pada pre-test kelas eksperimen adalah 43 dan pada kelas kontrol adalah 41. (2) Nilai rata-rata dari kemampuan siswa pada post-test kelas eksperimen adalah 75 dan pada kelas kontrol adalah 60. (3) Hasil pengujian hipotesis, peneliti menemukan bahwa thitung = 9,2308 sedangkan ttabel = 3,841. Karena ttabelthitung (3.841<9.2308), maka disimpulkan Ha diterima. (4) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dalam kemampuan berbicara khususnya dalam bertanya dan memberikan pendapat dengan menggunakan Strategi Time Token Kata Kunci: Strategi Time Token, Keterampilan Berbicara Abstract Speaking can be defined as a productive activity which a student communicate with the other students to achieve certain goals or express opinions, intentions, hopes and point of view, with the Minimum Criterion Competence (MCC) score is 65. In reality, the students could not achieve the MCC since the students were lack of vocabulary, the students were unable to express their opinion by using expression asking and giving opinion, and the English teacher still used conventional method in teaching speaking skill. Based on conditions above, the researcher conducted a research by using Time Token Strategy in teaching speaking.. The population of the research was the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sogaeadu in 2020. The researcher took samples which consisted of 40 students by using Cluster Sampling Technique. The instrument used in collecting the data was oral test. The result shows: (1) The mean score of the students’ ability in pre-test of experimental class was 43 and in control class was 41. (2) The mean score of the students’ ability in post-test of experimental class was 75 and in control class was 60. (3) The result of testing hypothesis, the researcher found that tcount = 9,2308 while ttable = 3,841. Because ttable<tcount (3,841<9,2308), it is concluded that Ha is accepted. (4) Briefly, there is an effect of time token strategy on students’ speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sogaeadu Keywords: Time Token Strategy, Speaking Skill

Abstract

Students with different first languages will make an error when learning a second language or foreign language. It occurs in spoken or written form. Based on the researcher’s observation and interview with the English teacher at SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Alo’oa, the researcher found some students’ problems in using preposition in writing descriptive text. The purpose of the research is to analyze the type of errors that is made by the tenth grade of Agriculture Department in SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Alo’oa in using the preposition in writing descriptive text.. The research used Corder’s theory of error classification namely, omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. As the result, the students made a 57.14% error on misformation, 26.53% on omission, 10.21% on addition, and 6.12% on misordering.

Abstract

Writing is an ability to express the idea or thought to the other in written form. In writing, the students has to be able to express his/her thought in writing in order that the reader can understand and get message easily. In the syllabus of curiculum 2013 at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Hiliduho expected the students were able to express the meaning in short functional text and simple short essay in the form of recount. In fact, the students are unable to realize what the syllabus hope, so they could not achieve the target of MCC in writing. In solving the problem, the researcher tries to increase the students’ ability in writing paragraph especially in recount text by using IBC strategy by designing Classroom Action Research in teaching learning process. The subject of this research is the students of the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Hiliduho which is the total number of the students is 30 students. The research was applied in two cycles, each cycles consist of two meetings. Each meeting followed the steps of CAR: planning, action, observation and reflection. In collecting the data of the students’ ability in writing recount text by using IBC strategy, the researher use observation papers, field notes, writing test, and camera. Cycle I in first meeting, the students’ observation paper showed that there were 10 students (33,34%) had done all of the activities and 20 students (66,66%) had not done the activities; the second meeting, there were 14 students (46,67%) had done all the activities and 16 students (53,33%) had not done the whole activities; and the result of the students’ evaluation paper showed that there are 3 students (10%) in very good level, 2 students (6,67%) in good level, 8 students (26,66%) in enough level, 15 students (50%) in less level and 2 students (6,67%) in fail level. Then, the average of the students’ value is 58,5. This mean noted that the students still less in achieving MCC 60. In cycle II, the researcher re-planed and improved the weaknesses of the activities of the cycle I in order that the students’ ability could achieve the MCC 60. The result of the students’ evaluation paper in first meeting showed that there are 25 students (83,33%) had done all the activities and 5 students (16,67%) had not done all the activities; in the second meeting there were 29 students (96,67%) had done the activities and 1 student (3,33%) had not done the whole activities; and the result of the students’ evaluation paper stated that there were 15 students (50%) in very good level, 12 students (40%) in Good level and 3 students (10%) in enough level. It showed that all the students achieved MCC is 60. The average of the students’ value is 82,3. This value said that the students’ ability in writing recount text by using IBC strategy was increased effeciently and effectivelly. The researcher had some suggestions, such as: IBC strategy is effective used by English teacher in teaching writing recount text because it interests, encourage, and motivates the students in writing, the students should often practice to write English trainning them to have writing English habit, the English teacher needs to motivate the students to convey their opinions and ideas in writing form, and be active using dictionary.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks factual report dengan menggunakan mind mapping di kelas sebelas SMK Swasta Kristen BNKP Gunungsitoli. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 18 siswa. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data adalah tes menulis dan wawancara. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menemukan ada empat (4) siswa memiliki nilai Sangat Baik (22%), Lima (5) siswa mendapat nilai Baik (27%), enam (6) siswa mendapat nilai Rata-rata (33%), dan tiga (3) siswa mendapat nilai Buruk (18%), Dalam kemampuan mereka dalam menulis teks factual report dengan menggunakan mind mapping. Kemudian, faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks laporan faktual dengan menggunakan mind mapping didominasi oleh faktor kepribadian terutama dari faktor domain afektif. Akhirnya, berdasarkan temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas sebelas SMK Swasta Kristen BNKP Gunungsitoli masih belum mampu menulis teks paragraph dengan baik dan faktor yang mempengaruhi siswa dalam menulis adalah faktor kepribadian, terutama dari faktor domain afektif.

Abstract

Collaborative Strategy is a learning model used by teachers in the teaching and learning process in groups. Collaborative Strategy can help students to interact with their friends in reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to analyze the implementation of Collaborative Strategy in teaching students' reading comprehension. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach, which is a research method used to search on natural object conditions. The research instruments used were Lesson Plan, Observation Sheet, Field Notes, Students' Worksheet, and Transcript Interview. The results showed that the implementation of Collaborative Strategy in teaching students' reading comprehension ran well. It was proven that when doing collaborative students the interacted with fellow friends. For students' comprehension level, students in class X TKJ 2 at SMK Negeri 1 Sitolu Ori are at the literal meaning level with the result that 80% of the answers at this level. The results of Collaborative Strategy implementation challenges were decoding 38% with 8 students, fluency 9% with 2 students, vocabulary 24% with 5 students, sentence construction and cohesion 9% with 2 students, reasoning and background knowledge 10% with 2 students, working memory and attention 10% with 2 students.
