Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah. The design of this research was quantitative research with the name correlational design. The population of this research were students of class XI SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah and the sample was class XI science students, totaling 25 students. In collecting data, the researcher used a questionnaire and speaking scores from the English teacher. The researcher used SPSS 23 for the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability. After analyzing the questionnaire data, the result or rxy of 0.87 were obtained, the results of a signifinance level of 5% from rtable were 0.413. Therefore the rxy value was higher than the rtable value; 0.87>0.413. It is assumed that there is a correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Peling Tengah in the academic year of 2021. The level of correlation coefficient between variable X and variable Y is 87%, which is a very high correlation or has a correlation.

Abstract

This research emphasized the problems of speaking ability in English among students of English Education Study Program in Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This type of research was descriptive qualitative. In this research, the researcher used interview as instrument to find out the problems faced by the students in speaking English. From the results of the research, the researcher found the main problems faced by the students were limitations on vocabulary, errors in pronunciation, and incorrect grammar. In addition, the students also got anxiety when they speak in English and they embarrassed when they speak incorrectly, and they are still affected by their native language until they have problems in speaking English.Keywords: Speaking; Speaking Problems.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of online games on the English skills of students of the English Language Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This study used a qualitative approach as a research method, the subjects of this study were 10 active students of the English Language Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This research purpose is to find out the effect of online games on English skills. In order to analyze the data, the researchers conducted interviews and took notes from video game recordings. As a result of this research. Researchers found that online games have a significant effect on improving English language skills. The effect are students can learn and practice their English skills such as speaking, reading, listening, and writing skill. Therefore, students can improve their English skills because in the game participants can use this as a means of learning and practicing English skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the differences between English and students’ transcriptions and factors affecting English pronunciation. The researcher used a qualitative research method in this research which consisted of five students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah Luwuk who were from Banggainese as the subjects. In collecting data, the researcher used the interview as an instrument. The findings of this research showed there are some differences between English and students’ transcriptions, i.e. there are mispronunciations. One of the causes is the effect of the mother tongue. Additionally, the researcher also found that there are four factors affecting English pronunciation, they are: age, the first, language, the learners’ motivation and attitude, and the teachers’ instruction in the target language.

Abstract

Learning English is an important part that must be learned by teenagers today. Developments in technology and science oblige them to master the international language. English is able to open job opportunities for teenagers. However, the condition of Lontos Village, East Luwuk District, Banggai Regency, has not been able to provide human resources that can meet their English learning needs. Therefore, one of the XXXIII KKN student programs in Lontos Village provided English Conversation guidance to the youth there. The purpose of this activity is to build interest in speaking and conversational skills as well as to increase the confidence of young people in Lontos Village, East Luwuk District, Banggai Regency in speaking English. The implementation method used is the approach to teenagers, lectures, practice and question and answer. The results of this activity show that there is an interest in Lontos village youth in English. They also show confidence in using English. So that the ability of teenagers in English conversation has been seen. It is hoped that they will continue to hone their English skills.
